2016-17 SEASON PREVIEW The 2016-17 Fighting Illini Women’s swimming and diving team looks to build off of its recent Butterfly success, following three consecutive winning seasons. Illinois will look to make it four consecu- tive winning seasons for the first time since 1996-1999. Junior Stratford and senior Stecker headline butterfly competition for the Illini. Stratford cur- rently holds the top 200-yard fly time in school history (1:59.12), followed closely by Stecker “This year we have a small senior class with three athletes,” said head coach Sue Novitsky. (1:59.24). “However, those three are having a big impact on the rest of the team. It has been very benefi- cial that [the seniors] have stepped up their leadership and are really taking to heart the impor- Individual Medley and Relays tance of a strong team relationship. It is not just the seniors, but all of the classes have been active in giving back to the team and working to be the best teammates they can be each day.” With the seniors that graduated last year, many athletes will be competing for relay spots. Distance Freestyle

Sophomore Casas and senior Stecker will look to contribute in distance freestyle for the Illini, as Casas swam the team’s fastest 1650-yard free time (16:57.70) last season, while Stecker posted a team-best time of 10:17.90 in the 1000-yard free.

Backstroke and Breaststroke

With the departures of Lori Lynn, Jennifer Coady and Sloane McDermott to graduation, the Illini will look to, Ashley Aegerter and Gabriele Serniute to lead the way in the back and breast events. Aegerter will look to build on last season’s success, as she posted the team’s top 200-yard breast time of 2:15.45 at the Big Challenge. Serniute made a nice impact in her first season with the Illini, posting top-5 times on the season in the 50-yard back, 50-yard breast and 100-yard breast.

Sue Novitsky enters her 17th season as the head coach of the University of Illinois THE NOVITSKY FILE swimming and diving team. Novitsky, who joined the University of Illinois swimming and diving staff as a volunteer assistant coach in 1994, begins her 22nd season as Hometown: Huntington Woods, Mich. a part of the Illini program. After three seasons of working as the volunteer coach, Alma Mater: Oakland University, 1991 Novitsky was promoted to assistant coach in the fall of 1997. In August 2000, she was hired by former Director of Athletics, Ron Guenther, as the fifth head coach in the program’s history. While working with the Nasa Wildcat Aquatics team, Hayden simultaneously worked ALEC HAYDEN as a volunteer assistant for Northwestern University. Alec Hayden is entering his fourth season as an assistant swimming coach with the Fighting Illini swimming and Hayden started his coaching career as an assistant senior coach with Nasa Wildcat diving program. Hayden came to Illinois from William & Aquatics in April of 2008. Prior to joining the staff at William & Mary, Hayden served as the head senior coach for the Nasa Wildcat Aquatics team, which was comprised of 40 high school and eighth-grade swimmers. Under his tutelage, Wildcat swimmers set one national age group record and eight state records. He coached three swimmers who qualified for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials.

He coached four swimmers to a combined 14 state championships and also coached the 2011 50 freestyle USA Swimming Junior National runner-up. At the 2012 National Club Swimming Association Junior Nationals, he coached the Wildcat boys to an eighth-place national finish and the combined team to a 10th-place finish.

Waters coached an honorable mention All-American in the one-and three-meter CHRIS WATERS diving competitions at Division III Connecticut College in 2000 and was named DIVING COACH // 11TH SEASON Missouri Valley Conference Diving Coach of the Year in 1999 after coaching the Male Diver of the Year and the men’s one-and three-meter champions at Missouri State. Chris Waters begins his 11th season as the Illini diving coach. Waters came to Illinois with a wide variety of experience as a diving coach, including stops at Tulane, Syracuse, Virginia Tech and Missouri State. At Tulane, Waters had a top-12 finisher in both the one-and three-meter diving competitions at the Conference USA Championships. W aters also coached one Syracuse diver to the NCAA Zone A Championships in 2005 and had two divers place at the Big East Conference meet.
