General Election 2015 Results
General Election 2015 Results. The UK General Election was fought across all 46 Parliamentary Constituencies in the East Midlands on 7 May 2015. Previously the Conservatives held 30 of these seats, and Labour 16. Following the change of seats in Corby and Derby North the Conservatives now hold 32 seats and Labour 14. Northamptonshire Conservatives Welcome Wind Farm Planning Announcement
NORTHAMPTONSHIRE CONSERVATIVES WELCOME WIND FARM PLANNING ANNOUNCEMENT Conservative Members of Parliament in Northamptonshire and the Party’s Parliamentary Candidate for Corby & East Northamptonshire, Thomas Pursglove, have today welcomed the changes to planning law which will ensure local residents affected by wind farm proposals will actually have a proper say in whether wind turbines are sited in or near their communities. New planning guidance supporting the planning framework from DCLG will make clear that the need for renewable energy does not automatically override environmental protections and the planning concerns of local communities. It will also give greater weight to landscape and visual impact concerns. In welcoming the announcement Chris Heaton-Harris MP (Daventry), said: “If you have been involved in any local campaign to fight an inappropriately sited onshore wind farm, you will know that on every occasion local opinion is trumped at the planning appeal by national energy policy/targets. The changes announced mean that this is reversed and more weight has to be given to local opinion. From what I can gather, subsidies will also be reviewed on an annual basis. This is superb news for those fighting unwanted wind turbines across Daventry and across the whole of England. I truly believe that this announcement brings about the beginning of the end of new onshore wind turbines across England. It is extraordinarily excellent news!” Peter Bone MP (Wellingborough), said: “Conservative ministers are to be congratulated for pushing through a reform to planning regulations which will mean that when local councils turn down wind farm proposals, they will not be overturned on appeal. -

Making politics visible: Discourses on gender and race in the problematisation of sex- selective abortion Sundari Anitha and Aisha Gill Accepted for publication in Feminist Review Abstract This paper examines the problematisation of sex-selective abortion (SSA) in UK parliamentary debates on Fiona Bruce’s Abortion (Sex-Selection) Bill 2014-15 and on the subsequent proposed amendment to the Serious Crime Bill 2014. On the basis of close textual analysis, we argue that a discursive framing of SSA as a form of cultural oppression of minority women in need of protection underpinned Bruce’s Bill; in contrast, by highlighting issues more commonly articulated in defence of women’s abortion rights, the second set of debates displaced this framing in favour of a broader understanding, drawing on post-colonial feminist critiques, of how socio-economic factors constrain all women in this regard. We argue that the problematisation of SSA explains the original cross-party support for, and subsequent defeat of, the policies proposed to restrict SSA. Our analysis also highlights the central role of ideology in the policy process, thus making politics visible in policy-making. Although transcripts of these conversations revealed that sex had been mentioned in relation to a genetic disorder – which can be sex-specific – in one case, the article omitted this significant detail. -

One of the unequal contests between government and opposition is the difficulty of an opposition to obtaining quality advice in preparing its plans for government. It is for that reason that after taking office in 1997 we trebled the amount of Short Money available to the opposition parties. It has long been clear that a high priority for the incoming Labour Government would be constitutional reform. Indeed our first Parliament witnessed a degree of constitutional reform which probably has no match in terms of breadth or significance since the great reform acts of the nineteenth century. -

4 Philip Cowley and Mark Stuart The Conservative parliamentary party The Conservative parliamentary party Philip Cowley and Mark Stuart 1 When the Conservative Party gathered for its first party conference since the 1997 general election, they came to bury the parliamentary party, not to praise it. The preceding five years had seen the party lose its (long-enjoyed) reputation for unity, and the blame for this was laid largely at the feet of the party’s parliamentarians.2 As Peter Riddell noted in The Times, ‘speaker after speaker was loudly cheered whenever they criticised the parliamentary party and its divisions’.3 It was an argument with which both the outgoing and incoming Prime Ministers were in agreement. Just before the 1997 general election, John Major confessed to his biographer that ‘I love my party in the country, but I do not love my parliamentary party’; he was later to claim that ‘divided views – expressed without restraint – in the parliamentary party made our position impossible’.4 And in his first address to the massed ranks of the new parliamentary Labour Party after the election Tony Blair drew attention to the state of the Conservative Party: Look at the Tory Party. Pause. Reflect. Then vow never to emulate. Day after day, when in government they had MPs out there, behaving with the indiscipline and thoughtlessness that was reminiscent of us in the early 80s. Where are they now, those great rebels? His answer was simple: not in Parliament. ‘When the walls came crashing down beneath the tidal wave of change, there was no discrimination between those Tory MPs.
