Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 ABSTRACT This study inquires into the consequences of modernization by examining the qabila concept and how it is expressed in the urban context. Specifically, it evaluates the persistence of the tribal {qaba ’il) concept in Saudi /Arabia as manifested in the Hejaz among Nejdi qaba 'it groups. Because the qabila has lost much of its traditional identity as a group of nomadic pastoralists in the modem Saudi State, this dissertation examines instead the social and symbolic manifestations of qaba 'il and their psychological self­ definition. In this study, I seek to answer two primary questions: How are we to define the qaba 'il (tribal) concept within the Saudi Arabian context? How is group identification maintained within the qaba 'il context? I focus on three qaba 'il that have migrated from Nejd to the Hejaz: the Beni Tamim, the Ateibah, and the Anazah. These qaba 'il faced groups of differing knowledge and customs and, ultimately, acquired an even stronger sense of group identity outside their place of origin. This research centers on the concept of “group identity”: that is, groups do not exist in isolation but in their interactions with one another. Qaba 'il boundaries in the urban setting are symbolic in that they distinguish and identify the group rather than physically demarcating a tribal territory—as used to be the case in a traditional, rural setting. ii The findings of this study have shown the following: (1 ) qaba 'il group identification, maintained through the enforcement of the ideology of the dominant society, Wahhabism, re-enforces qaba 'il religious ideology (chapter 6); (2) the qaba 'it concept in Saudi Arabia is best defined using an indigenous definition that refers to a cultural category identified contextually and situationally (chapter 7); and (3) through ascribed membership within qaba 'il families, qaba 'il values are maintained and inculcated (chapter 8). These findings indicate that understanding the qaba 'il concept as a form of group identification is essential in understanding Saudi sociocultural dynamics. In light of the reality of tribes in Saudi Arabia, antiquated notions—that tribes are primitive, that they are nomadic, and that the term “tribe” is pejorative—need to be re­ examined and reconceptualized to meet the changing contexts of tribal people throughout the world as they experience the processes of human mobility, forced relocation, and/or nationalism. This dissertation makes significant contributions to the field of anthropology and the ethnography of Saudi Arabia and, a developing area of study, the Gulf region. Ill O mankind! Hearst Museum of Anthropology This article presents an overview of the Peter B. Cornwall collection in the Phoebe A. Arabia Hearst Museum of Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley. Cornwall Benjamin W. Porter conducted an archaeological survey and excavation project in eastern Saudi Arabia 240 Barrows Hall, #1940, and Bahrain in 1940 and 1941. At least twenty-four burial features were excavated in Department of Near Eastern Bahrain from five different tumuli fields, and surface survey and artefact collection Studies, University of California, took place on at least sixteen sites in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.     CHAPTER TWELVE Fish and Fishing D.T. Potts 1 Introduction The benefi ts of fi sh in the human diet have long been recognized. With an average protein content of 18 – 22 percent and other important elements (essential amino acids, calcium, fl ourine, iodine, iron, phosphorus; Vitamins A, B, and D), fi sh have been an important component of the low - protein, high - carbohydrate diets that have been common in the Near East throughout the pre - Modern era (Englund 1990 : 7 n33; see in general Van Neer 1994 ). Nowadays, the benefi ts of Omega 3 fatty acids in fi sh oil are promoted for their ability to help the body combat everything from Alzheimer ’ s disease to cancer, ulcers, and many more affl ictions. Nevertheless, considering the fact that the region dealt with in this volume contains long stretches of shoreline on at least seven seas (Aegean, Medi- terranean, Black, Red, Caspian and Arabian Seas, and the Persian Gulf), as well as a number of major rivers (Tigris, Euphrates, Karun, Orontes, Khabur, Balikh, Jordan, Greater Zab) and lakes (e.g., Lake Kinneret, Lake Van, Lake Parishan, Hamun - e Helmand), not to mention thousands of manmade irrigation canals, neither freshwater nor saltwater fi sh in Near Eastern antiquity have received the attention that they deserve. The purpose of this chapter is to provide a broad overview of a number of issues associated with fi sh.     I am a seeker and keeper of stories, a visual poet whose purpose is to connect with people and places, creating images that tell their story. My goal is to go beyond the documentary image and make a connection to the energy within the human spirit and the spirit in nature. I am a documentary and fine art photographer. For National Geographic I profiled Japanese culture as seen through the art and culture of Kyoto. The Soul of Kazakhstan is a book about the culture of Kazakhstan, and is regarded by scholars as one of the most accurate studies of the Kazakh worldview and culture. The Liv- ing Seas, a book of underwater photography, is the official book for the aquarium at EPCOT. Smithsonian magazine commissioned me to photograph the first and most extensive study of archeology in Saudi Arabia. For National Geographic I produced a film about the King’s Camel Race, a 12 mile competition between 1,400 camels. For thirty years I’ve studied and continue to study the Al Murrah, a nomadic Arab tribe with an unbro- ken blood line dating back to earliest recorded history. My wife Patti and I lived as nomads with the Al Murrah and created the award winning book BEDOUIN. I’ve photographed assignments in more than 125 countries. For seven years I was under contract with the State Department as a consultant to train diplomats about the history and culture of Kazakhstan and Saudi Arabia. My fine art work has been exhibited in museums like the Mingei, Smithsonian, Natural History and Kuwaiti Museum.

Printed in the United States of America DOI: 10.1017.S0020743806391064 Thomas Hegghammer and Stephane´ Lacroix REJECTIONIST ISLAMISM IN SAUDI ARABIA: THE STORY OF JUHAYMAN AL-UTAYBI REVISITED The storming of the Mecca mosque by Juhayman al-Utaybi and his fellow rebels in November 1979 represents one of the most spectacular events in the modern history of Saudi Arabia. Yet, it is one of the least understood. Even decades after the event, many important questions remain unanswered. Who were the rebels, and what did they want? Why and how did Juhayman’s group come into existence?1 What happened with the rebels and their ideas after the Mecca events? This article seeks to shed light on the story and legacy of Juhayman al-Utaybi with new information gathered from extensive fieldwork in Saudi Arabia and elsewhere. Whereas the details of the Mecca operation are relatively well known, the origin of the rebel group is shrouded in mystery.2 The existing literature on Juhayman’s movement is both sparse and contradictory. The interested student will find few in-depth studies of it in English.3 The Arabic-language literature on Juhayman is somewhat more extensive and has certainly been underexploited by Western academics, but many works suffer from inaccuracies and political bias.4 A key problem has been the absence of good primary sources, which has made it virtually impossible for historians to trace the origin and history of Juhayman’s movement in any significant detail. This changed in 2003, when Nasir al-Huzaymi, a former associate of Juhayman al-Utaybi, lifted the veil on his past and wrote a series of articles in the Saudi press about his experience as a member of Juhayman’s group.5 Al-Huzaymi had been active in the organization between 1976 and 1978 but left a year before the Mecca operation.

The first chapter deals with the po litical, social and religious background of ‘ Abd al-M alik, and relates this to his later policy on becoming caliph. Chapter II is devoted to the ‘ Alid opposition of the period, i.e . the revolt of al-Mukhtar ibn Abi ‘ Ubaid al-Thaqafi, and its nature, causes and consequences. The ‘ Asabiyya(tribal feuds), a dominant phenomenon of the Umayyad period, is examined in the third chapter. An attempt is made to throw light on its causes, and on the policies adopted by ‘ Abd al-M alik to contain it.
