At a press conference in Washington with FCC Commissioner Jonathan S. Adelstein, the groups called for a crackdown on stations that present corporate-sponsored videos as genuine news to an unsuspecting audience. CMD, which unveiled the results of a 10-month investigation, found scores of local stations slipping commercial “video news releases,” or VNRs, into their regular news programming. The new multimedia report released today includes footage of 36 separate VNRs and their broadcast as “news” by TV stations and networks nationwide, including those in the nation’s biggest markets. The full report -- “Fake TV News: Widespread and Undisclosed” -- is now available complete with VNR and TV station video footage at www.prwatch.org/fakenews/execsummary. -

ARGUMENTS AGAINST LESBIAN AND GAY PARENTING Victoria Clarke Loughborough University, Women’s Studies Research Group, Department of Social Sciences, Loughborough, Leicestershire LE 113TU, UK Synopsis — In this article, I explore arguments commonly used to support the claim that lesbians and gay men should not be parents. Thematic analysis of recent media representations of lesbian and gay parenting and six focus groups with university students highlighted the repeated use of a number of ar- guments to oppose lesbian and gay parenting. I critically discuss the six most prevalent in this article. These are: (1) “The bible tells me that lesbian and gay parenting is a sin”; (2) “Lesbian and gay parent- ing is unnatural”; (3) “Lesbian and gay parents are selfish because they ignore ‘the best interests of the child’”; (4) “Children in lesbian and gay families lack appropriate role models”; (5) Children in lesbian and gay families grow up lesbian and gay; and (6) “Children in lesbian and gay families get bullied.” I examine these themes in relation to other debates about lesbian and gay and women’s rights, and high- light the ways in which they reinforce a heterosexual norm. © 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. INTRODUCTION from feminist research and theorising on mar- ginal parenting in this paper, by focusing on Feminist research has noted that while moth- the construction of lesbians and gay men as in- erhood is socially constructed as fulfilling and appropriate parents. -

Localism and Independence at Viacom Television Stations Group Stations Executive Summary Viacom Television Stations Group (VTSG) comprises 35 full-service television stations in some 27 markets around the country whose central focus is service to the local community. Sixteen of these stations are affiliated with the CBS Network, 18 with the UPN Network and one is independent. Each station is managed and operated by a local team that is committed to serving its local community by broadcasting programming covering local public affairs, local emergencies, local politics and local civics and culture. In addition, off-air, VTSG stations and their employees are actively involved in community activities and community events by participating in and donating to thousands of community and charitable events. The following nearly 200 pages contain only highlights of the ways in which VTSG stations serve their local communities. For example, with respect to local news, the summary shows that VTSG dedicates hundreds of hours of airtime each week and spends hundreds of millions of dollars providing its viewers with high quality local news, in addition to the hundreds of hours of national CBS News aired each week on VTSG stations affiliated with the CBS Network. Specific examples of local news commitments include: • WCBS-TV (CBS), New York, NY, airs 30.5 hours of local news per week, representing about 19% of its weekly programming schedule. It spends more than $40 million annually producing its local newscasts. • KCBS (CBS) and KCAL (Ind.), Los Angeles, CA, air about 34 hours and 30 hours, respectively, of local news per week, representing on average about 19% of each station’s broadcast week. -

She was well aware of the abundance of toxic materials that exist in homes today from her experience as an interior designer, but was unaware these materials can off gas as dangerous chemicals into the air we breathe (ie: that “new home smell”). Lisa then began a journey in search of answers. After much research and a dozen doctor visits, she came to the conclusion that her house and products within the home were making her sick! It was through her research that Lisa decided to become a BBEC/Building Biologist (Building Biology —a study derived from Germany which encompasses how buildings impact life and the living environ- have become media personalities championing the ment).
