She was well aware of the abundance of toxic materials that exist in homes today from her experience as an interior designer, but was unaware these materials can off gas as dangerous chemicals into the air we breathe (ie: that “new home smell”). Lisa then began a journey in search of answers. After much research and a dozen doctor visits, she came to the conclusion that her house and products within the home were making her sick! It was through her research that Lisa decided to become a BBEC/Building Biologist (Building Biology —a study derived from Germany which encompasses how buildings impact life and the living environ- have become media personalities championing the ment). Starting in theater, then moving on to touring concert lighting, Lee moved into television and film lighting in the mid-1980’s. From 1984 until 1998, Lee was a partner in Ocean, Rose & Associates, a film and video lighting design firm located in Hollywood. Then in 1998 became a partner in Design Partners, Inc., an award winning association of lighting designers and directors of photography. Now after 18 years Lee is moving on again to start his own firm Lee Rose Designs. Lee has been twice nominated for Emmy Awards for his work with Yanni, including the "Yanni: Live at the Acropolis" concert at the nearly 1500 year old Herod Atticus theatre. He was again nominated for his lighting design work on "Yanni: Tribute", a show that featured concerts taped at the Taj Mahal, in Agra India and The Forbidden City in Beijing China. In addition Lee was awarded Lighting Dimensions "Lighting Designer of the Year" for his lighting design work on that project. Lee’s lighting design work has been seen in feature films including “Southland Tales”, “Bringing Down the House”, "Vanilla Sky" and “Almost Famous”. His television lighting design work is seen on the Chelsea Lately and comedy specials with Eddie Griffin, Nick Cannon and Christopher Titus and annual events such as The Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon, The Daytime Emmy Awards and Revolver’s Golden Gods Awards. ARGUMENTS AGAINST LESBIAN AND GAY PARENTING Victoria Clarke Loughborough University, Women’s Studies Research Group, Department of Social Sciences, Loughborough, Leicestershire LE 113TU, UK Synopsis — In this article, I explore arguments commonly used to support the claim that lesbians and gay men should not be parents. Thematic analysis of recent media representations of lesbian and gay parenting and six focus groups with university students highlighted the repeated use of a number of ar- guments to oppose lesbian and gay parenting. I critically discuss the six most prevalent in this article. These are: (1) “The bible tells me that lesbian and gay parenting is a sin”; (2) “Lesbian and gay parent- ing is unnatural”; (3) “Lesbian and gay parents are selfish because they ignore ‘the best interests of the child’”; (4) “Children in lesbian and gay families lack appropriate role models”; (5) Children in lesbian and gay families grow up lesbian and gay; and (6) “Children in lesbian and gay families get bullied.” I examine these themes in relation to other debates about lesbian and gay and women’s rights, and high- light the ways in which they reinforce a heterosexual norm. © 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. Media scholars Shanto Iyengar and Donald Kinder, based on studies of television coverage, have shown that “those problems that receive prominent attention on the national news become the problems the viewing public regards as the nation’s most important.” 232 Political scientists Roy Flemming, John Bohte, and Dan Wood point out that “[r]elations between the media and the public are obviously reciprocal in nature. The media faces market incentives to follow events and develop stories that attract audiences. At the same time, public concerns over issues reflect in part the media’s coverage.” 233 Regardless of the direction of influence, however, media coverage—which can be measured by the placement, or venue, of stories and the volume of stories—offers a proxy for public awareness and concern.
