If you don’t know what liturgy is, this book is also for you. Whether you are over-churched or under-churched, a proud evangelical, a recovering evangelical, or not evangelical at all; whether you are high-church, low-church, or no-church, a skeptic or a Pentecostal; whether you have found a community or have burnt out on community; this book is for you. This is a different kind of book. It’s not a book you try to pick up and read straight through. In fact, this book is not designed to be read alone. It is a book filled with songs, prayers, ideas, and memories that are meant to be spoken aloud and shared together in some form of community. That “community” may be your biological family or a small group of friends. It could mean gathering folks in your public housing unit or dorm room, in your village or cul-de-sac each morning or evening for prayer. For the early Church it meant meeting in homes and as congregations in local assemblies. Whatever the case, this is a book about “we” not “me.” “They met daily in each other’s homes.” Common Prayer There are so many different divisions of Chris tian ity — Greek, Russian, and Serbian Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Anglican, Reformed, Presbyterian, Baptist and Anabaptist, African Methodist Episcopal, Pentecostal and Non- denominational, Mennonites and Quakers. By one count,there are over 38,000 thousand Chris tian denominations. Many people have said that the greatest barrier to becoming a Chris tian is all the division they see within the Church. God’s deepest longing is for the Church to be united as one Body. Schlag INTRODUCTION Every student of law has at some point encountered the “bright line rule” and the “flexible standard.” In one torts casebook, for instance, Oliver Wendell Holmes and Benjamin Cardozo find themselves on opposite sides of a railroad crossing dispute.1 They disagree about what standard of conduct should define the obligations of a driver who comes to an unguarded railroad crossing. Holmes offers a rule: The driver must stop and look.2 Cardozo rejects the rule and instead offers a standard: The driver must act with reasonable caution.3 Which is the preferable approach? Holmes suggests that the requirements of due care at railroad crossings are clear and, therefore, it is appropriate to crystallize these obligations into a simple rule of law.4 Cardozo counters with scenarios in which it would be neither wise nor prudent for a driver to stop and look.5 Holmes might well have answered that Cardozo’s scenarios are exceptions and that exceptions prove the rule. Indeed, Holmes might have parried by suggesting that the definition of a standard of conduct by means of a legal rule is predictable and certain, whereas standards and juries are not. This dispute could go on for quite some time. But let’s leave the substance of this dispute behind and consider some observations about its form. First, disputes that pit a rule against a standard are extremely common in legal discourse.

    Praying the Liturgy of the Hours The Liturgy of the Hours, also known as the Divine Office or the Work of God (Opus Dei), is a beautiful and ancient tradition in the Church marking the hours of each day and sanctifying the day with prayer. It is not reserved for clerics and religious (although they take vows to say it), but can also be prayed by the lay faithful. In fact, the Second Vatican Council highly encouraged the laity to “recite the divine office [especially Morning and Evening Prayer-the Major hours], either with the priests, or among themselves, or even individually” (Sacrosanctum Concilium, 100). The Hours are a meditative dialogue on the mystery of Christ, using scripture and prayer. The foundation of the prayer is simple – praying the Psalms – but in practicality can be difficult. If one chooses to purchase a physical breviary (the book that contains the Liturgy of the Hours, it can be challenging – especially if no one is there to show you what to do. However, after an initial introduction to praying the Liturgy of the Hours, it becomes much easier and soon it will be like clockwork. There are two main forms of the breviary. You can purchase a four-volume set entitled The Liturgy of the Hours from the Catholic Book Publishing. You can usually purchase for as low as $155. However, you can also purchase one volume at a time: This four-volume set contains prayers for all the hours of the day: Office of Readings (Major Hour); Lauds or Morning Prayer (Major Hour); Daytime Prayer (minor hour(s)-one or more of Terce (Midmorning), Sext (Midday), or None (Midafternoon); Vespers (Major Hour); and Compline or Night Prayer.

I know that music made a tremendous difference in the anti- war movement of the 60s as well as the civil rights movement. Music is a powerful force that is often unrecognized. A song has a way of inspiring folks that nothing else comes even close to. We are in need of inspiring songs. One of the roles of a songwriter is not only to reflect on what is happening in the present but also to provide a vision of the future. What is your vision of the future? For some it is nihilistic bleakness – a very cynical response to our world. For others, it is filled with hope – we are somehow going to be able to figure out how we can live together and with all of creation. If you are a performer, I want to challenge you to get out of yourself and add songs that reflect your vision of the future to your repertoire.

    MILESTONES IN PUBLISHING THE SPANISH AND PORTUGUESE PRAYER BOOK IN LONDON By Dr Roy Shasha, Jerusalem – August 2020 Introduction The year 2020 marks the publication of the first new British edition of the Spanish and Portuguese prayer book in over 100 years. This achievement represents the culmination of many years of planning, a major re-editing of the text and the preparation of a new translation by a small body of dedicated professional staff and a larger number of equally dedicated volunteers. Therefore, this is perhaps an appropriate moment for us to stand back and view this achievement within its historical context. An excellent brief history of the printing of the Spanish and Portuguese prayer book was written by Hakham Gaster in the introduction to his edition of the prayer book, and the writer wishes to acknowledge his debt to this important piece of work. However, the intention and scope of this work is quite different to that of Dr Gaster in a number of respects. 1. We have attempted to list all Spanish and Portuguese prayer books planned, printed, or edited in London, including a number that were not authorised by the Mahamad and one that was written but not published. Also included are all the known Spanish translations of the text prepared in London. 2. Each volume seen has been described in a precise bibliographical fashion, and as far as possible not only reprints, but also bibliographical variants have been noted. 3. Each edition has been placed wherever possible in a historical context. A brief biography of each editor or translator has been included, together with information as to how the books were distributed.

And that seems particularly true with regard to the effects of technological change on tort litigation practice.     Forum on Public Policy Sociomaterial Movement Learning in Evangelical Student Activism: A Case Study in Environmental Education Sherrie Steiner, Assistant Professor, Sociology Department, Indiana University – Purdue University, Fort Wayne Abstract What began as a professor’s classroom illustration to encourage students to take climate change seriously sparked a student movement that transformed Eastern University into a leader in environmental stewardship and social responsibility. How did this happen at an evangelical university in a conservative coal state that, at the time, was producing 1% of the world’s climate change gases? Using the method of autoethnography, the author provides an explanation that involves political opportunity structures (recent legal changes now allowed consumers to purchase clean energy from the electrical grid), the influence of ideas (the professor had published a theory about the transformative influence of environmental education—students challenged her to operationalize the theories), intentional strategizing (by students who implemented best practices from other universities), student government (who conducted meetings across campus before holding a senate vote) and political struggle between university administrators and students that was only resolved after the student body president obtained media coverage by The Philadelphia Inquirer. What really lit a fire under the student body, however, went beyond theory frames, politics, legal changes, social movement strategies, student government or individual charisma. Some might call it serendipity. By 2003, 37% of Eastern University’s electricity came from wind energy. Within two years, Eastern University had 100% of the electricity for the main campus generated by wind energy. In 2004, they added a 56 kilowatt solar system to the roof of the Eagle Learning Center.
