Becoming an Animal Rights Activist: an Exploration of Culture BECOMING AN ANIMAL RIGHTS ACTIVIST: AN EXPLORATION OF CULTURE, SOCIALIZATION, AND IDENTITY TRANSFORMATION by NICOLE RENEE PALLOTTA (Under the Direction of James J. Dowd) ABSTRACT This dissertation examines dominant cultural beliefs about human-animal relations and the challenge to this ideology posed by animal rights activists. Through an analysis of the conversion narratives of vegan animal rights activists, the dynamics of socialization and re- socialization are considered against the backdrop of a culture that harbors contradictory, contested, and changing views regarding the acceptable treatment of nonhuman animals. The political ideology, beliefs, and worldview of animal rights activists will be examined, and the process of conversion to a vegan animal rights perspective and lifestyle, which is usually punctuated by dramatic turning points, will also be considered. How does a person become an animal rights activist? How does a routinized activity like meat eating, which achieves taken- for-granted status for most members of American culture following the completion of the normal socialization program, come to be seen as an arbitrary, problematic, and amoral convention? The construction of an alternative sense of morality regarding the human-animal relationship and the redefinition of conventional boundaries will be examined in light of what is often a gradual process of identity transformation. The effect of the identity shift on personal relationships and social interactions will also be considered. Within the past decade, however, social scientists have increasingly begun to pay the movement some attention (Groves 1995, Herzog 1993, Kunkel 1995, Arluke and Sanders 1996). However, scholars working in the social movement tradition within sociology have, for the most part, not applied their theories to the animal rights movement. The animal rights movement is a theoretically interesting case, as it shares much in common with other twentieth century social justice movements while at the same time retaining significant differences that make it unique. For instance, compared with other social movements, such as the anti-war movement or the civil rights movement, the animal rights movement is more transformative in that it pervades every aspect of the lives of activists. The significant lifestyle changes required of activists are so totalizing that it is almost impossible for them to keep these changes a “secret” or to compartmentalize the issue from their daily, non-activist lives. How are activists recruited to this movement? Or do they tend to seek out the movement themselves? Consonant with recent trends in social movement theory that have begun to emphasize cultural and social psychological factors (Buechler 1993; Goodwin, Jasper, and Polletta 2001), my research on the animal rights movement was motivated by the belief that it would provide a 2 productive site for the refinement of some of the basic theoretical concepts within social movement theory, especially recruitment. No matter what the social movement, questions of participation, motivation, and recruitment are always central for sociologists seeking to understand the dynamics of mobilization and resistance. Further, I anticipated that the animal rights movement would provide fertile ground upon which to explore culture and cognition as it pertains to movement participation and activism. One of the issues that my dissertation addresses is food classification, that is, cultural rules concerning what may or may not be eaten and individual adherence to these rules. These initial interests in recruitment, culture, and cognition have led me ultimately to focus upon the concepts of socialization and conversion, which will be the main themes explored in this dissertation. Becoming an animal rights activist is essentially a process of identity transformation and hence questions pertaining to recruitment and participation in the animal rights movement are intimately connected to questions of identity and re-socialization. What is the Animal Rights Movement? There’s a schizoid quality to our relationship with animals, in which sentiment and brutality exist side by side. Half the dogs in America will receive Christmas presents this year, yet few of us pause to consider the miserable life of the pig— an animal easily as intelligent as a dog—that becomes the Christmas ham (New York Times Magazine, “An Animal’s Place,” by Michael Pollan, 11/10/ 02). The beginnings of a movement for animal rights, which is also sometimes referred to as the animal liberation movement, has been traced in the U.S. (its British counterpart emerged about a decade earlier) to the publication of Australian utilitarian philosopher Peter Singer’s groundbreaking book, Animal Liberation, in

    DISAGGREGATING THE SCARE FROM THE GREENS Lee Hall*† INTRODUCTION When the Vermont Law Review graciously asked me to contribute to this Symposium focusing on the tension between national security and fundamental values, specifically for a segment on ecological and animal- related activism as “the threat of unpopular ideas,” it seemed apt to ask a basic question about the title: Why should we come to think of reverence for life or serious concern for the Earth that sustains us as “unpopular ideas”? What we really appear to be saying is that the methods used, condoned, or promoted by certain people are unpopular. So before we proceed further, intimidation should be disaggregated from respect for the environment and its living inhabitants. Two recent and high-profile law-enforcement initiatives have viewed environmental and animal-advocacy groups as threats in the United States. These initiatives are the Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC) prosecution and Operation Backfire. The former prosecution targeted SHAC—a campaign to close one animal-testing firm—and referred also to the underground Animal Liberation Front (ALF).1 The latter prosecution *. As soon as President Barack Obama heard about the awful school massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, not yet one month ago, he reacted like I can imagine any president would have reacted: he spoke with the governor and promised him every single resource that he would need to investigate the crime, care for the victims, and counsel their families. But the president also did something else. He made a public statement at the White House where he didn’t speak as a president, but as a parent. He said: I know there’s not a parent in America who doesn’t feel the same overwhelming grief that I do. The majority of those who died today were children. They had their entire lives ahead of them — birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own. Among the fallen were also teachers — men and women who devoted their lives to helping our children fulfill their dreams. So our hearts are broken today — for the parents and grandparents, sisters and brothers of these little children, and for the families of the adults who were lost. Our hearts are broken for the parents of the survivors as well, for as blessed as they are to have their children home tonight, they know that their children’s innocence has been torn away from them too early, and there are no words that will ease their pain.

    7 Deadly Sins: Lust In order to organize the way that we go through the 7 deadly sins, we will follow the pattern that Dante gave us in the Purgatory. In the poem, he is being led in a vision through purgatory and he sees it as a vast mountain, near the bottom are the worst sins and near the top the lesser sins. The penitents climb the mountain, leaving sins behind and eventually attaining heaven. We are actually going to go backwards, down the mountain, starting with the lesser sins and working our way to the more grave ones. The sin that, while still deadly, is considered the least, is Lust. Is Lust even a sin? (Obviously we know it is because it is one of the 7 deadly sins, but suspend belief with me for a moment.) It seems as though perhaps it is not a sin. After all, lust is not an action, it is not hurting anybody else, but it is a feeling. Typically, a sin is an action that we willfully carry out. We cannot be judged by what tempts us, after all, Our Lord was tempted in the desert for 40 days and we know that he never sinned. However, Our Lord also says this, “27 You have heard that it was said to them of old: Thou shalt not commit adultery. 28 But I say to you, that whosoever shall look on a woman to lust after her, hath already committed adultery with her in his heart.” This is a part of the Sermon on the Mount, in which Jesus teaches us how to take the law, the rules and precepts of the moral life, and inscribe those rules on our hearts.

Neben gesundheitlichen Er- wägungen oder Kritik an der Massentierhaltung – etwa an Kli- ma- und Umweltschäden, dem Leiden der Tiere, den Einbußen in der Qualität durch Zugabe von Antibiotika – stellt sich für viele die grundsätzliche Frage, ob wir Tiere für unsere Zwecke (und wenn ja, in welcher Weise) nutzen dürfen. Ein Blick in die Geschichte zeigt, dass Menschen sich schon immer Tiere zu nutzen gemacht haben – als Nahrungsquelle, für schwere Arbeiten in der Landwirtschaft, im Krieg und bei der Jagd, als Statussymbole und zum Vergnügen, für medizi- nische Versuche, als Haustiere. Die Tierschutz- und die Tier- rechtsbewegungen haben in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten für einen Bewusstseinswandel beim Umgang mit Tieren gesorgt. So wurde der Tierschutz als Verfassungsziel ins Grundgesetz auf- genommen und in der Schweiz sogar der Verfassungsgrundsatz der Tierwürde festgeschrieben.
