Daniel O’Connell, Marquess Wellesley and the politics of Dublin Castle in the 1820s Dr Síle McGuckian In 1829 Daniel O’Connell stood at the pinnacle of his career. He was one of the most powerful men in Ireland, having achieved his life time goal of Catholic Emancipation as well as his election as a member of parliament. However, only nine years earlier in 1820 O’Connell had had virtually nothing to show for more than a decade of political sacrifice and agitation. The 1820s were to prove to be the crucial decade of O’Connell’s career. He pursued every possible means of achieving his goals, and although his success when it came appeared to have been achieved far from the corridors of power in Dublin Castle, his interactions with the members of the Irish Administration were an integral part of his successful campaign. The years following the Act of Union in 1801 had been very barren ground for the Irish Catholic movement with successive British governments taking a hard line on any Catholic claims. In 1820 the Irish movement was split. In London the prime minister, Lord Liverpool, and the majority of his cabinet was strongly opposed to Emancipation, while in Dublin an uncompromising Protestant administration remained in charge in the Castle. The independent Irish parliament had been abolished in 1801, and replaced by a separate Irish administration in Dublin Castle that was overseen by London. The lord lieutenant, or viceroy, remained the head of the Irish administration and the Crown’s representative in Ireland. He dealt directly with the prime minister and the home secretary. -

Finding a Voice: The Role of Irish-Language Film in Irish National Cinema Heather Macdougall A Thesis in the PhD Humanities Program Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Concordia University Montreal, Quebec, Canada August 2012 © Heather Macdougall, 2012 ABSTRACT Finding a Voice: The Role of Irish-Language Film in Irish National Cinema Heather Macdougall, Ph.D. Concordia University, 2012 This dissertation investigates the history of film production in the minority language of Irish Gaelic. The objective is to determine what this history reveals about the changing roles of both the national language and national cinema in Ireland. The study of Irish- language film provides an illustrative and significant example of the participation of a minority perspective within a small national cinema. It is also illustrates the potential role of cinema in language maintenance and revitalization. Research is focused on policies and practices of filmmaking, with additional consideration given to film distribution, exhibition, and reception. Furthermore, films are analysed based on the strategies used by filmmakers to integrate the traditional Irish language with the modern medium of film, as well as their motivations for doing so. Research methods included archival work, textual analysis, personal interviews, and review of scholarly, popular, and trade publications. Case studies are offered on three movements in Irish-language film. First, the Irish- language organization Gael Linn produced documentaries in the 1950s and 1960s that promoted a strongly nationalist version of Irish history while also exacerbating the view of Irish as a “private discourse” of nationalism. Second, independent filmmaker Bob Quinn operated in the Irish-speaking area of Connemara in the 1970s; his fiction films from that era situated the regional affiliations of the language within the national context. -

The Catholic Association campaigned for Catholic Emancipation, a successful movement that promoted the participation of Catholic elites in the United Kingdom Parliament. In the 1840s the Friends of Repeal formed in the United States in order to support Daniel O’Connell’s Repeal Association in Ireland. This organization sought the repeal of the Act of Union of 1800, which had created the United Kingdom and dismantled the Irish Parliament. -

The 1916 Rising and County Wexford Introduction The 1916 Rising and County Wexford pack is an introduction to County Wexford’s contribution to the uprising of that year. It offers information on many aspects: causes and context, a timeline of events, the aftermath, profiles of some local leaders, the role of women, and arts and literature inspired by the Rising, among others. Extracts from original documents of the period - letters, newspaper accounts, and witness statements are included. The selection provides a flavour of life in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in Ireland and in County Wexford. It is intended to encourage and enable students to embark on further study. The pack includes references for all sources quoted and offers guidance to sources and resources for further research. The 1916 Rising and County Wexford pack cannot and does not attempt to tell the story of the Rising in its entirety. Rather, it introduces the reader to the wealth of information available in primary sources - an essential starting point for all reliable research- and in books, websites and other e-sources. The pack focuses in particular on local supports - the materials in the Wexford Studies Collections located on the top floor of the County Library in Mallin St., Wexford town, and in the Wexford County Archive collections in Ardcavan, Wexford. While every effort is made here to offer as current a resource as possible, you are directed also to the Council’s website for the 2016 Commemorations, www.enniscorthy1916.ie which will be updated beyond the print date of this publication. -

The Banshee’s Kiss: Conciliation, Class and Conflict in Cork and the All for Ireland League. Thesis submitted in accordance with the requirements of the University of Liverpool for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Patrick Joseph Murphy. August 2019 1 The Banshee’s Kiss: Conciliation, Class and Conflict in Cork and the All for Ireland League. ABSTRACT Historians have frequently portrayed constitutional nationalism as being homogeneous - ‘the Home Rule movement’- after the reunification of the Irish parliamentary party in 1900. Yet there were elements of nationalist heterodoxy all over the country, but it was only in Cork where dissent took an organised form in the only formal breakaway from the Irish party when the All for Ireland League (A.F.I.L.) was launched in 1910. The AFIL took eight of the nine parliamentary seats in Cork and gained control of local government in the city and county the following year. Existing historical accounts do not adequately explain why support for the Home Rule movement collapsed in Cork, but also why the AFIL flourished there but failed, despite the aspiration of its name, to expand beyond its regional base. The AFIL is chiefly remembered for its visionary policy of conciliation with unionists following the Damascene conversion of its leader William O’Brien, transformed from the enemy of the landed classes to an apostle of a new kind of bi- confessional politics. This would, he claimed, end the ‘Banshee’s Kiss’, a cycle of conflict in which each new generation attempts to achieve Irish freedom. However, conciliation was a policy which was unpopular with both nationalists and unionists and O’Brien therefore needed to develop an electoral base by other means with more popular policies. -

Kildare, Ireland ABSTRACT KEYWORDS In 1970’s Ireland, a number of feminist activists became the editors Journalism; feminism; of the women’s pages of the national daily newspapers. Their work newspapers; work culture; radically changed women’s access to the role of journalist as well as gender fundamentally altering the normative perspective applied to news stories. These women introduced “new journalism” to Ireland, writing about issues in the private rather than the public sphere and doing so from an explicitly feminist point of view. These female editors inhabited a workspace and culture that was heavily masculine, but they negotiated bias and sometimes outright discrimination in order to change the gendered nature of Irish print media. -
