Dipterists Forum Hoverfly Newsletter Number 67 Spring 2020 ISSN 1358-5029 . On 21 January 2020 I shall be attending a lecture at the University of Gloucester by Adam Hart entitled “The Insect Apocalypse” the subject of which will of course be one that matters to all of us. Spreading awareness of the jeopardy that insects are now facing can only be a good thing, as is the excellent number of articles that, despite this situation, readers have submitted for inclusion in this newsletter. The editorial of Hoverfly Newsletter No. 66 covered two subjects that are followed up in the current issue. One of these was the diminishing UK participation in the international Syrphidae symposia in recent years, but I am pleased to say that Jon Heal, who attended the most recent one, has addressed this matter below. Also the publication of two new illustrated hoverfly guides, from the Netherlands and Canada, were announced. Both are reviewed by Roger Morris in this newsletter. The Dutch book has already proved its value in my local area, by providing the confirmation that we now have Xanthogramma stackelbergi in Gloucestershire (taken at Pope’s Hill in June by John Phillips). After a thorough review of the scientific literature, as well as government documents, and careful evaluation of existing accessioned tick collections (vouchers) in museums and other repositories, we have determined that the verifiable hard tick fauna of New Jersey (NJ) currently comprises 11 species. Nine are indigenous to North America and two are invasive, including the recently identified Asian longhorned tick,Haemaphysalis longicornis (Neumann, 1901). For each of the 11 species, we summarize NJ collection details and review their known public health and veterinary importance and available information on seasonality. Separately considered are seven additional species that may be present in the state or become established in the future but whose presence is not currently confirmed with NJ vouchers. -

Wicklow, Eire. Abstract.—Linnaeus described 37 species of flower flies (Diptera: Syrphidae). His collection was studied, and the current status of all his flower fly names is given. Six new synonyms are established (Scaeva annulipes Zetterstedt = Er- iozona erratica (Linnaeus), Musca citrofasciata DeGeer = Xanthogramma /es- tiva (Linnaeus), Xylota curvipes Loew = Chalcosyrphus femoratus (Linnaeus), Chrysogaster chalybeata Meigen = Chrysogaster cemiteriorum (Linnaeus), Musca nemorum Linnaeus = Eristalis arbustorum (Linnaeus), and Pipiza var- ipes Meigen = Pipizella viduata (Linnaeus)); six misidentifications are corrected {arcuatum of authors = Chrysotoxum fasciatum (Miiller), conopseus of au- thors = Doros profuges (Harris), festivum of authors = Chrysotoxum arcuatum (Linnaeus), femoratus of authors = Chalcosyrphus valgus (Gmelin), nemorum of authors = Eristalis interrupta (Poda) and viduata of authors = Chrysogaster lucida (Scopoli)); and 34 lectotypes are designated. The science of taxonomy and the presently accepted system of nomenclature of living things are considered to have begun with the work of Carolus Linnaeus. He introduced a binomial system for the naming of organisms, and the 10th edition of his Systema Naturae (1758) is designated as the starting point for zoological nomenclature. Hence, an understanding of the Linnaean species is fundamental to taxonomy. Linnaeus described 36 species of flower flies in 1758 and another in 1761. -

Clark Street Vermillion, SD 57069 *Corresponding author email: [email protected] ABSTRACT The scope of literature concerning tick-borne disease in South Dakota (SD) is limited primarily to case reports by public health officials. Published records of ticks occurring in the state are scarce and are mostly limited to reports of ticks opportunistically collected from wildlife, with little focus on surveillance for ticks themselves or potential pathogens. There exists only one published record with a compilation of the ticks of South Dakota (1983). Here, the current literature on the ticks of South Dakota, the pathogens they may carry, and their relevance and history in South Dakota are reviewed. Three new tick species documented in the state since the last publication are included herein, bringing the total number of tick species in the state to 21. I review and update past reports to in- clude new county records and identification of pathogens previously undetected in the state and include some information on ongoing research involving ticks and tick-borne disease in the state. This manuscript and the projects referenced within were conducted with the goal of drawing attention to the need for tick surveillance in South Dakota.
