    WSHL WRAP-UP; September 28-October 1, 2017 Fresno Monsters @ Long Beach Bombers RIVALRY RENEWED; BOMBERS POST THREE STRAIGHT ONE-GOAL WINS OVER MONSTERS 09.28.17 – Long Beach 5, Fresno 4 09.29.17 – Long Beach 4, Fresno 3 09.30.17 – Long Beach 3, Fresno 2 The Long Beach Bombers surpassed the Fresno Monsters as a Western Division power over the past two seasons, but Fresno is back in the game in Year Two under former NHLer Kevin Kaminski. The Bombers did post a three-game sweep on home ice, but in reality, the margin was razor thin, with all three games decided by a single goal. Long Beach scored three times in a span of 7:40 early in the game and withstood a late Fresno rally for a 5-4 win in Thursday’s series opener. Daylon Mannon’s second goal of the game came with 9:10 left in the third period and got the Monsters within a goal, but Domenic Bosetti (31 saves) protected the one-goal lead the rest of the way for an entertaining Bombers victory in front of the Long Beach crowd. Cody Key also scored twice for Fresno while five different Bombers lit the lamp, including Miroslav Rohlik, whose tally with 30 seconds left in the second period proved to be the game-winner. Anton Ahlin scored with two seconds left in regulation to give the Bombers another one-goal win, 4-3, on Friday night. The Monsters led 2-0 at the first intermission, but the Bombers scored twice to tie it up after two periods.

    Mark Mauno photo WSHL WEEKLY NOTES 10.13.17 – WESTERN DIVISION FRESNO MONSTERS (1-5-0) @WSHLMonsters www.FresnoMonsters.com Sometimes a team’s record can be deceiving and does not truly represent the club’s talent level. That is absolutely the case with the Fresno Monsters, who have dropped five of six games to start the year despite playing well almost every time out. Fresno’s first two series to open the season were against Long Beach and Valencia, the top two clubs in the Western Division last year. After dropping their first five games, which included three one-goal contests, the Monsters took their frustration out on previously undefeated Valencia in an 11-3 blowout victory. Forwards Cody Key and Daylon Mannon share the early team lead in goals with six apiece. Mannon owns the edge in assists with six compared to four for Key. Goaltender Adam Barvik has been played much better than his 0-3-0 record would indicate. He owns a .921 save percentage while leading the team in ice time. Fresno will look to build some momentum from its big win over Valencia this weekend when it travels to San Diego for a three-game series against the winless Sabers.     WSHL WEEKLY NOTES 10.10.18 – WESTERN DIVISION FRESNO MONSTERS (00-00-0, 00 pts) @WSHLMonsters www.FresnoMonsters.com The Freson Monsters get their 2017-18 season underway this week by hosting the Ontario Avalanche for a three-game series at Selland Arena. The Monsters, who finished third in the division race last season despite having the best goal differential (+109), will play 21 of their 23 home games at the downtown arena this season. Fresno has four returning defensemen to build their defense around: 20-year-old Logan Domagala, entering his fourth WSHL season and his third with the Monsters, 19-year-olds Taylor Hiatt (a Fresno native) and Ty Wright and Cody Printzen, who was a regular last year at 17. "Domo was named captain amongst his peers," said Monsters head coach Kevin Kaminski. "He has a lot of experience in the league and we will rely on him a lot to show the young guys the way. He is solid defensively but has great vision and can score and make plays." Another 20-year-old, Joel Brotzge, is a puck-moving D-man who spent the last three years playing Junior A in Switzerland while 18-year-old Michael Gomez is a Visalia native who played in the Eastern Hockey League last year. "I think we're pretty solid on 'D' but still looking to pick up another offensive threat," said Monsters head coach Kevin Kaminski. "Joel Brotzge looks good. He does a lot of the little things right, has excellent positional play and good offensive instincts.

The Monsters were tied with Valencia entering the weekend, but now have a five-point lead on the fourth-place Flyers. San Diego's David Grindstaff broke the ice 5:21 into Friday night's contest, and that was the only scoring in the first period, but Fresno scored the next six goals – three in the second and three in the third – and rolled to a 6-2 win. Deivids Tempelmanis scored all three third period goals in a span of 6:59. Cody Key (1-4-5) figured in five of six goals for the Monsters and 60-goal scorer Daylon Mannon turned playmaker, dishing out four helpers as well. Fresno's Kyle Franceschini stopped 26 of 28 shots in the game while San Diego's Zach Hale made 32 saves at the other end. The Monsters started stronger on Saturday, scoring three times in the first period, then shifted into another gear with six goals in the second frame on their way to a 12-0 win.     WSHL WEEKLY NOTES 11.07.18 – WESTERN DIVISION FRESNO MONSTERS (6-4-0, 18 pts) @WSHLMonsters www.FresnoMonsters.com The Fresno Monsters played a single game last week, travelling to Valencia on Friday. Martin Dlugolinsky and Stanislav Danaev each scored twice in the game for the Monsters, and Cole Beckman’s goal in the final minute of the third period secured a 5-3 win over the Flyers. It also marked the Monsters debut of their new goaltender, WSHL veteran Tyler Mathews. Mathews, who made 28 saves to pick up the win, has had previous stints in the WSHL with Salt Lake City and Idaho. The 19-year-old began the season with the Maryland Black Bears of the NAHL and provides Fresno head coach Kevin Kaminski with another option between the pipes. Max Karlenzig has been a workhorse, playing the first nine games and getting solid results (5-4-0/3.29/.907), but having two established veterans can be a huge plus over a 52-game season in a very competitive division like the Western. Case in point – the Monsters play three-in-three at division leader Long Beach starting Thursday, so it will be interesting to see how Kaminski splits up the starts for his goaltending tandem.
