MILL HILL VILLAGE COLTS REPORT FOR 2009

Last season for the first time we started an U7’s section. This went well considering this was the first season for the group, boys and girls alike enjoyed their first venture into youth cricket. Next season we hope to have more numbers and if possible form a team to play some friendly matches.

It was a season of up and downs for all squads. Due to lack of numbers for the U11’s they were unable to fulfill their League matches.

The U13’s under their new Manager Imran, had a better season and were runners up in their League. They also had a good Cup run, unfortunately losing to Southgate Adelaide in the Semi Finals. Imran has once again agreed to run the U13 this season and is looking forward to better success in 2010.

Due to exams etc the U15’s under the management of Chris Gallagher once again had a mixed season. Lack of availability took it toll on the squad with never having the same squad of players from one match to another this of course did not help towards their team performance.

This season as before we will have Level One Coaches and Level Two Coaches, (all CRB checked by the ECB) training the boys and girls and are looking forward to better performances and in turn further success.

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES . This is our sixty fourth year at Burtonhole Lane and although players change throughout the years the spirit and social atmosphere never does.

So here we are in 2010 with new 1 st and 2 nd team Captains, both having progressed through our Colts section into the adult teams, like many before them and with them our hopes of a sunny and successful summer. Our Colts are also benefiting now by having more coaches who themselves came through our Colts system.

With this and our friendly social reputation lies the reason why we are still that same village cricket club we were in 1946.

So whether a players or spectator you be, I hope you all enjoy another summer at Burtonhole Lane.

MHV 1 ST ELEVEN 2009 SEASON REPORT

A classic season of two halves is the best description I can come up with for our efforts in 2009.

Winning our first two games, losing the next seven (six really as PPCC fielded 12 players and should have been forced to forfeit the game by the league committee) and going unbeaten throughout the majority of the second half of the season. This rollercoaster season ended up with us finishing in fourth position. This indicates a creditable finish in what is always a competitive league.

As always the team were a pleasure to captain and at times produced scintillating cricket. Particular highlights include three hundreds from Najum, Chris Gallagher and Felix (146) respectfully . This is a dramatic improvement on the previous season where we failed to score one.

The emergence of Danny Potter as an opening batsman and renaissance of Saahil Mehra and return of the talented Nir Shah were also pleasing to witness. In fact Saahil and Dave Overton proved a real threat with the new ball once they had settled as a partnership.

Sumit Jadav again proved himself to be the best spinner in the league claiming a hatful of , although is run tally with the bat will be an area for improvement in 2010. In addition, Graeme Burton bowled exceptionally in the middle of the innings, especially at home, where he proved unplayable at times. He also shared an amazing ninth partnership at GWR with Sahill that proved pivotal in turning our season around. It was a shame his body let him down, preventing him from getting the wickets he inevitably would have taken.

Chris Gallagher again showed his versatility and talent opening the bowling, ,keeping wicket and taking five wickets bowling off spin at SKLP to win us the match across the course of the season. He really is the Sir Garfield Sobers of Mill Hill Village.

In summary, 2009 has to be regarded as progress. We fielded a relatively settled side and used far fewer players than in previous seasons. The side showed signs it was maturing and dug in to win games that in the past we would have lost.

Despite me being in hospital receiving six stitches to a head wound, the passion and desire to stuff Perivale Phoenicians out of sight in the last game of the season meant we all had a fantastic end of year tuck in after winning out last game.

Our main concentration in 2010 has to be to chase totals, as again we threw points away collapsing after having done the hard work with the ball.

After three seasons as Captain I will be stepping down and handing the reigns over to David Overton. I have every confidence he will develop into an exceptional captain and move MHVCC onto the next level. Personally I look forward to getting some runs and wickets in the ranks next season.

My thanks have to be extended to Dave and Graeme for stepping in and captaining the side in my absence. Sue and Tom Gallagher again have been ‘superstars’ and the club owe you a real debt.

Here’s to an enjoyable 2010down at the Village.

JAMES COOK

MHV 3RD ELEVEN 2009 SEASON REPORT

The ultimate football cliché is a game of two halves, however our season can be best described as a season of two halves.

The start of the season was an excellent one. A match-changing spell of 6-67 in out opening game from Colin “Monty” Burrows reduced Old Actonians from 140-1 to 239 all out. This was followed ironically by our best team batting performance of the season, with Hinal and Ali Sayed making half centuries enabling us to win by 7 wickets.

This was promptly back up by a win at Southgate (Sam taking 6-20) putting us top of the league at an early stage of the season. A disappointing collapse against South Hampstead where we went from 150-5 to 157 all out left us 40-50 runs short and we lost by 6 wickets.

North London gave us the most challenging and yet satisfying run chase in my time at the Village. Rob “Lurch” Stirrup playing in his first game in 10 year and Jamie Awan in his second game for the club both hit centuries putting on 272 for the second wicket, allowing us to cruise home with the score at 300-1!

However our inconsistencies from the previous season reared their ugly head again, with a loss to Hanwell, who, as per Polytechnic in the previous season were able to achieve their only wins of the season against us, despite finishing bottom.

Against Brondesbury, despite having only 9 players, another century by Jamie allowed us to creep home by 3 wickets, a result followed by a frustrating abandonment against Acton when we had them on the rack.

Our reliance on Jamie for runs was proved against Edmonton when we could only manage 112 all out, chasing 278 and further confirmed with Jamie’s 175 (featuring 12 sixes) in a total of 257 against Old Actonians.

However, this was to be our last win of the season, a statistic, which ultimately led to our relegation. Losses to Southgate and South Hampstead, the latter by an agonizing 6 runs where Sam had nearly won the game with a quick fire 30, followed by two draws against North London and Middlesex Tamils, meant that we were dropping down the table quicker than Pete Jaffe’s average.

The conclusion to the season was even worse though. Unavailability’s left us short of players in 2 of the last 4 games, with one game being called off and another leading to a 9 wicket loss where we played with 9 players for the second time in the season.

Overall our inability to bowl teams out or chase, poor fielding and our habits of starting games with 8-9 players together with poor availability throughout the season (we used 38 players over the course of the season!) led to our relegation, which on reflection was probably fair.

Despite the above there were some positives in the season: Sunny and Vic made good contributions with the bat in the handful of games they played, and Rob was consistent despite familiar collapses around him. Sam bowled well in spells and Darshan bowled well once he had some overs under his belt, but the truth was that we lacked a consistent attack in terms of accuracy and personnel.

Jamie’s contributions were obviously invaluable, however given he may not be playing with us again next year, the mantle with the bat and ball are there to be stepped up to.

I will not be continuing with the captaincy this year, owing to studying and other commitments at the Village, however my successor will have a great opportunity to return us back to Division Two.

May thanks go to Liam, Sue and Tom who have all made my job that bit easier this season

It is a club with tradition and one, which has played no small part in the social life of Mill Hill Village, a factor that, must give quiet satisfaction to all who has ever been connected with it.

M.H.V. 2 ND ELEVEN REPORT FOR 2009 SEASON

With a promotion to the first this year I held a firm belief that we could vie for promotion again. This though was quickly eradicated when I found the lack of depth in the club through no attempt to swell our ranks. All year we never really had any batting and without batters you simply cannot win games.

We drew out 1 st game of the season and then proceeded to lose every game after that.

We unfortunately lost Craig Atkinson 4 th game in, with a season ending leg injury. He was just settling back into being a very good opening bat. Hopefully he will be back next season raring to go.

Our 9 th match was against Indian Gymkhana with another loss, but a well organized 5 for 50 from Matt Garner with four of them all exactly the same shot to Marcus Cara to catch.

It was not until the 11 th and 12 th games of the season that we actually won.

First was against Glaxo who beat us to the title last year. Our innings started comically with a slow motion ball rolling onto bemused George Lee stumps. Then the day was built round a slow but very determined 37 from Anton Muszanskyj. Another lovely to watch 34 from Lee Cara and well shot 38 from late again Bilal Butt to make a total of 173. Good spells from Lee Cara and myself restricted their scoring with a good rotation of bowlers we chipped away at the wickets. Finishing with the spin twins Matt Garner and Terun Desai. Plus two great run outs from Hinal Gajjar and Terun to win us a memorable game by 19 runs.

Our next game was against North London who was currently running 2 nd . We had a good all round batting performances with Nazim Asif once again doing one of his quick fire run gets, this week for 46. Claw, H and Billy all in their mid 20’s, we got to 182. A fantastic opening spell from Jon Bird and myself with JB only getting one wicket but deserving so much more, with great lines, swing and pace. A five- wicket haul for myself was worth buying the jug at the end of the day. Billy mopped up the tail with three wickets to be all out for 119.

We then went back to our losing ways again for the next couple of games. With the only highlights being Marcus Cara (48) and Anton Muszanskyj (29) innings at Twickenham and Marcus’s impressive 80* not out against Turnham Green.

Our next win was against Harrow ST Mary’s, which was orchestrated by a magnificent 6 for 32 off 9 overs by Hinal. Dismissing them for 94. We made it with sic wickets down. Fazi (21), Hinal (15) and with a new bat in tow Piers Jenkins males a shot playing 18* and 30* to a very promising Bharat Velani.

With only 3 wins and a draw all season, we went crashing back to the second division. With 2010 season being the fifth Captain in five years when Andy Potter takes over, something needs to be addressed.

With thirty one different players in the 2’s this season, two and half games played with 10 men and several games fielding with seven players for 40+ minutes, we must ask ourselves what do we want from this club? So a call must go out to EVERY player to bring in at least one player. It’s not hard, I bring in at least 10-15 every year.

On a positive note, batting from Naz was never elegant but always entertaining with his quick fire runs helping to keep us just in the games. His bowling was very useful too. Marcus Cara top scoring, best average and most runs for us with some lovely displays and bowled well without much luck for the season.

When Bilal butt decided to turn up he put in some nice scores. Piers Jenkins bought a new bat at last and rolled back the years with some very batsman like displays in his own style of course.

Jon (Mazel tov) Bird batted with some real maturity but was very unlucky with the ball all season. I bowled my usual consistent self with 25 wickets but couldn’t step up the other notch needed. The only other bowler in double figures was Matt Garner with ten. A new Aussie in to help at the end of the season was Chris O’Brien with some nicely varied spin, he will come in very handy this new season.

Zafar Basit served us very well as keeper for most of the season and a very good sounding board for me at slips. George Lee finished off the season with lightning glove work.

I would like to thank Sue – doing everything else that nobody else does. I would like to thank Vince for giving up his free time to officiate most of our games. The boys who would always give me a helping hand Anton, Matt, Chris, Hinal, Daniel, Zaf and Maz. To Andy Potter who will be your new Captain, please give him your full support.
