Chairman Reince Priebus C/O Republican National Committee 310 First Street, SE Washington, DC 20003 April 8, 2013 Dear Chairman Priebus, We write to express our great displeasure with the RNC commissioned report titled Growth and Opportunity Project. As individuals and organizations which represent millions of grassroots, faith-based voters who have supported (politically and financially) thousands of Republican candidates who share our values, we write to say: The Republican Party makes a huge historical mistake if it intends to dismantle this coalition by marginalizing social conservatives and avoiding the issues which attract and energize them by the millions. Unfortunately, the report dismisses the Reagan Coalition as a political relic of the past. It’s important to remember that from 1932-1980, the Republican Party was a permanent minority party. Political debate was confined to economic issues like the expansion of the Federal Government, taxes, and national security. It was not until 1980 with key changes in the GOP Platform and the nomination of Ronald Reagan that social conservatives were clearly invited to be an important addition to this coalition. Millions of “Reagan Democrats” voted not only for President Ronald Reagan, but became active in supporting other GOP candidates who shared their faith-based family values. That’s how Republicans achieved many successes since 1980 at every level of government. The report states on page seven that “America looks different.” It certainly does, but here are some facts about minority outreach…not opinions and theories from DC Consultants: 1 1. In 2004, President Bush carried Ohio because of the outreach to African-American pastors supporting a traditional marriage amendment on the ballot.

In each case, the group faced opposition within its chosen party but allied with friendly partisans to marginalize opponents and nominate politicians committed to their priorities. Trying to influence office holders whom the groups had no hand in nominating proved ineffective: office holders would promise benefits but do nothing that displaced core supporters or median voters. Mobilizing nonpolitical groups for political purposes was the road to success. In both cases, marginal social groups rather than politicians drove the process, creating transformed parties that would stand up for rather than straddle the issues they cared about. ii This dissertation of Christopher Andrew Baylor is approved.

  • How Do LGBT Voters Navigate the Political Landscape? an Analysis of Vote Choice and Public Opinion in 2016
How Do LGBT Voters Navigate the Political Landscape? An Analysis of Vote Choice and Public Opinion in 2016 Austin Mejdrich Eastern Illinois University [email protected] Ryan Burge Eastern Illinois University [email protected] Abstract: Exit polls reported by various news organizations provide a snapshot of LGBT voters, which indicates they are generally solid Democrats in the ballot box. However, exit polling does not provide the nuance necessary to describe the full range of how the LGBT community votes and how they perceive social and economic issues. Using the largest random sample survey of LGBT voters ever made publicly available, this research describes a group that is decidedly to the left of the political spectrum, but distinct from self-identified Democrats in several ways. Most notably, people who are both pro-life and LGBT were much more likely to vote for Donald Trump in 2016 than pro-life Democrats. These results indicate that there is a need to better understand the relationship between the LGBT community and abortion opinion, both theoretically and analytically. Introduction On July 21, 2016, then-candidate Donald Trump made history when he became the first Republican to include positive words about the LGBT community in his nomination acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention, declaring: “As your president, I will do everything in my power to protect our LGBTQ citizens from the violence and oppression of a hateful foreign ideology” (Johnson 2016). Months later at an October campaign rally in Colorado, Trump held an upside-down LGBT pride flag with the words “LGBTs for Trump” written in permanent marker on it, with the Republican crowd applauding the gesture (Lambert 2016).

The Fair Tax would treat everyone – gay or straight – equally. Until then, we support death tax repeal; domestic partner tax equity; cuts in the capital gains and corporate tax rates to jump start our economy and create jobs; a fairer, flatter and substantially simpler tax code. 2 HEALTHCARE REFORM Repeal of Obamacare; encourage free market healthcare reform. Allow for the purchase of insurance across state lines expanding access to domestic partner benefits; emphasizing individual ownership of healthcare insurance – such a shift would prevent discriminatory practices by an employer or the government. 3 SOCIAL SECURITY REFORM The only way to permanent solvency in the Social Security system is through the creation of inheritable personal saving accounts. Personal savings accounts would give gay and lesbian couples the same opportunity to leave their accounts their spouses as their straight counterparts.
