Middle-Class Cinema* M. MADHAVA PRASAD […] This chapter deals with the realist cinema of the subject, or what is commonly known as the middle-class cinema. In Sara Akash (The Whole Sky’, 1969) the urban middle-class world is treated with a solicitous detachment that was to disappear with the further development of the middle-class cinema. This mild trace of ethnographic objectifi cation is a sign that [Basu] Chatterji had not as yet recognized the possibilities of a cinema of identifi cation based on realist principles. The interventionist agenda of the FFC [Film Finance Corporation of India] project and the freedom from considerations of marketability no doubt contributed to this. The objectifi cation effect in Sara Akash is achieved through an emphasis on the characters’ immersion in a feudal culture, although the joint family home in which the story unfolds is located in an urban milieu. The potential for a cinema of identifi cation was still concealed by the burden of ethnographic distancing which the FFC’s realist programme placed on the fi lm-maker. […] [T]he story deals with the problem of modern individuals still caught up in a network of feudal customs and mental habits.
