We have been 3 Message from the President making persistent efforts to deepen our understanding of the languages, cultures and societies that comprise 4 TUFS Quick Overview this human diversity and also to train professionals who can serve as mediators between people with 6 International Partners different backgrounds. As the world becomes smaller and the interaction among different parts of the 8 Education world intensifies, there is a rapidly increasing need for accurate and deep understanding of cultural 10 Research President, differences and for those with the ability to mediate Tokyo University of Foreign Studies interaction among different people. This need 12 Contribution HAYASHI Kayoko reinforces the highly valuable expertise that TUFS provides in the study of linguistic and cultural diversity. 14 Organization It is our hope, not only to contribute to mediating and coordinating functions, but also to take on a leading 15 History role in creating positive power derived from human diversity to lead the world into a brighter future. There are many “differences” in the world, including differences of language, culture, ethnicity, religion, gender, age, and wealth. In order to overcome all these disparities, it is essential to increase mutual awareness, to deepen understanding of the sources and mechanisms of these differences, and to foster mutual respect. This may not be an easy path, but I believe that we can accomplish this and generate productive energy from this very diversity we have among people in the world. This is the kind of intercultural coexistence we seek. Instead of choosing between exclusion and assimilation, we need to seek a third way of embracing and working with diversity. Our ability to find this third way will determine what kind of future we will be living in. It is a core mission of TUFS to explore ways in education, research, and social programs to realize intercultural coexistence by generating creative power from diversity. I will be devoting my efforts to strengthen our institutional potential to achieve that goal. 2 Tokyo University of Foreign Studies TUFS GUIDE 2019 3 TUFS Quick Overview Students 3,880 Undergraduate Students School of Language and Culture Studies: 1,870 School of International and Area Studies: 1,926 School of Japan Studies: 82 Faculty Faculty of Foreign Studies: 2 (in process of closing; no new intake) Executive Directors: 9 Professors: 250 534 Administrative Staff: 135 Graduate Students Master’s Program: 324 Total Doctoral Program: 210 Total 394 Staff (As of May 1, 2019) 4,414 Students (As of May 1, 2019) Inbound 827 International students from 80 countries Languages On Offer Partner Institutions and regions Total (As of May 1, 2019) 75 Countries/Regions, Institutions Major Languages 71 217 28 Outbound English, German, Polish, Czech, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Uzbek, Mongolian, Japanese, Chinese, 780 Korean, Indonesian, Malay, Filipino, Thai, Lao, Vietnamese, Europe Asia North America Short-term (less than 6 months) Cambodian, Burmese, Urdu, Hindi, Bengali, Arabic, Persian, 28 countries/regions, 93 institutions 17 countries/regions, 2 countries/regions, 17 institutions Turkish 65 institutions 462 (more than 6 months, departure in 2018) Middle East Latin America Long-term Elective Languages Oceania 6 countries/regions, 14 institutions and the Caribbean 2 countries, 6 institutions Total 47 7 countries/regions, 11 institutions Africa 1,242 Students 9 countries/regions, 11 institutions (As of May 1, 2019) 4 Tokyo University of Foreign Studies TUFS GUIDE 2019 5 Asia 17 countries/regions, 65 institutions Bangladesh Myanmar Thailand International ● University of Dhaka University of Yangon ● Srinakharinwirot University ◆ ● Jahangirnagar University ● Thammasat University Pakistan ● Chulalongkorn University Brunei ● Chiang Mai University ● The University of Azad Jammu & Kashmir ● Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia, ● Universiti Brunei Darussalam ● Quaid-i-Azam University Mahidol University ● Oriental College, University of the Punjab Cambodia TUFS has partnership agreements with 217 institutions in 71 countries/regions around the world, Philippines Vietnam Partners ● Royal University of Phnom Penh ● VNU University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Hanoi enabling an increasing number of students and faculty to collaborate internationally and study abroad. ● University of the Philippines ● University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam China ● De La Salle University-Manila ● National University- Ho Chi Minh City Shanghai International Studies University Ateneo de Manila University ◆ ● University of Language and International Studies -
