Box 150459, Zarqa 13115, Jordan Abstract: The conception of conserving and managing an archaeological site is usually challenging. These issues become more challenging when dealing with archaeological sites in the scale of the world heritage site of Petra, Jordan. The current paper presents a critical evaluation on some of the conservation work at one of the world new seven wonders, the World Heritage Site of Petra. The research extended to discuss and evaluate the historical, structural and current condition of Petra monuments. The study has revealed that the conservation work at the city had been done by different international organization with a different concepts and standards for each work. The study had concluded that a national conservation standard is highly needed for the conservation work at the city of Petra. Most Palestinians in Jordan hold a Jordanian passport of some type but the status accorded different categories of Palestinians in Jordan varies, as does the manner and terminology through which different sources classify and discuss Palestinians in Jordan. The webpage of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) states that: “All Palestine refugees in Jordan have full Jordanian citizenship with the exception of about 120,000 refugees originally from the Gaza Strip, which up to 1967 was administered by Egypt”; the latter being “eligible for temporary Jordanian passports, which do not entitle them to full citizenship rights such as the right to vote and employment with the government”.

    ACOR Newsletter ^i ^ Vol. 12.2—Winter 2000 Qastal, 1998-2001 On a cold afternoon in early February 2000, Ra'ed Abu Ghazi, a management trainee for the Qastal Erin Addison Conservation and Development Project (QCDP), was walking home from the Umayyad qasr and mosque complex at Qastal (map, p. 9). In the lot between the ancient reservoir and his home, he stopped to speak to some neighbor children playing a game. Then a teapot overturned and the late afternoon sun re- flected off a blue-green, glassy surface. Ra'ed knelt to get a closer look and brushed gently at the loose earth. The area had recently been bulldozed, so the dirt was loose and only about five centimeters deep. As he washed the surface with tea water, a pattern of bril- liant glass tesserae was revealed. Ra'ed had made an exciting discovery at Qastal: a large structure from the late Umayyad period (A.D. 661-750), floored with what experts have called some of the most exquisite mosaics in Jordan (Figs. 1-3). The new structure is only the most recent development in two-and-a-half fascinating years at Qastal. Qastal al-Balqa' is men- tioned in the Diwan of Kuthayyir 'Azza (d. A.H. 105=A.o. 723): "God bless the houses of those living between Muwaqqar and Qastal al-Balqa', where the mihrabs are." Al- though there remain com- plex questions about this reference to "mihrabs" (maharib—apparently plural), the quote at least tells us that Qastal was well enough known to have served as a geo- graphical reference point before A.D.

    THE JOHN MARSHALL REVIEW OF INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAW BEYOND THE DESTRUCTION OF SYRIA: CONSIDERING A FUTURE IN SYRIA AND THE PROTECTION OF THE RIGHT TO CULTURE SARAH DÁVILA-RUHAAK ABSTRACT Although the right to culture has been widely recognized under international human rights, its reach and practical application has been limited in cultural preservation efforts. Individuals and communities that attempt to be part of the decision-making process in preservation efforts often face barriers to access in that process. The need to re-conceptualize the right to culture is vital for its protection and preservation. This article proposes that the right to self-determination must be utilized as a core fundamental principle that enables a disenfranchised individual or community to have ownership in preservation efforts and decide how to shape their identity. It further illustrates how incorporating the “ownership” element of the right to self- determination will strengthen the application of the right to culture in preservation efforts. The article utilizes the destruction of Syrian cultural heritage to discuss the need for further protections under international human rights law. Because Syrian cultural heritage is in peril, it is imperative that the right to culture of Syrians is strengthened for the survival of their culture and identity. Syrian cultural heritage must be preserved by the Syrians and for the Syrians, thus allowing them to directly shape who they are as a people. Postgraduate students in the medical and paramedical elds must conduct original research projects as part of their graduation requirements. However, that does not reect on the research publications coming from Syria. Methods: A nation-wide cross-sectional study targeting medical, dental, and pharmacy postgraduate students who are at the phase of planning for their required projects. The questionnaire aimed to capture their attitudes towards research, perceived barriers, and previous research experiences. Results: The sample consisted of 429 residents representing about 21.5% of the target population. Nearly all the participants had positive opinion towards the important role of medical research and the signicance of their participation. Agreement was also clear regarding perceived barriers including the lack of adequate training, and research facility.

    JORDAN Education Activities for Refugees August 2019 BACKGROUND – EDUCATION FOR REFUGEE STUDENTS Jordan continues to provide refuge to displaced populations from the region and around the world. Youth comprise a large number of the refugees in Jordan. Out of a registered population of 751,860 refugees as of 15 July 2019, 223,585 (30 %) range between the ages of 18-35 years old, and 359,945 (48%) refugees are between 0-17 years old. Refugee children enjoy free access to national basic education systems as mentioned in the Education Strategic Plan 2018-2022. However, refugee children face specific issues in terms of documentation (specifically for non-Syrians), a lack of resources and school materials. At present, there are limited opportunities available for refugees wishing to access tertiary education; whether for graduates of secondary school, or students who were forced to interrupt their university studies due to conflict. As reflected in UNHCR Global Education Strategy, tertiary education is an integral part of UNHCR’s Education Jordan Strategy 2017- 2019, and is considered within the continuum of the education cycle. Tertiary education includes all types of post-secondary education, such as education at colleges and universities which leads to degrees, as well as training that is technical, vocational, professional/para-professional and results in certificates and diplomas.
