HEART HEROES: Vera dela Vega, Age 7 My name is Vera and I’m 7 years old. When I used to run, jump or play sports, my heart would beat very fast and my chest would hurt. I told my Mom, Dad and doctor and they learned that one of my blood tunnels was growing from the wrong side of my heart. Two nice surgeons xed the tunnel, so I can run, jump and play sports without pain. I am very happy that my heart and the tunnel are xed. I am making sure my heart stays healthy by eating healthy foods, drinking lots of water and exercising. I’m excited to raise money for the American Heart Association so they can make new medicines and learn new ways to x more kids’ hearts that don’t work exactly right. Thank you, American Heart Association!

2 What are Jump Rope For Heart and Hoops For Heart? Jump Rope For Heart and Hoops For Heart are community service learning programs of the American Heart Association. They teach kids: • the importance of developing heart-healthy habits; • that being physically active can be fun; • that raising funds to support cardiovascular research and education helps save lives in their community and across the country. Millions of students have learned jump rope and basketball skills while learning how nutrition and physical activity can help them live longer, healthier lives. Jump Rope For Heart and Hoops For Heart also promote community service by teaching kids how to help others. Why is partnering with the American Heart Association so important? • Heart disease is the nation’s No. 1 killer. • Stroke is the fifth-leading cause of death in the United States. • Our children are developing significant health issues that can shorten their life expectancy: – Almost a third of U.S. children and adolescents ages 2-19 are overweight or obese. – Children who are obese are more than twice as likely to die before age 55. – Sixty-one percent of children ages 9-13 aren’t physically active outside of school. – On average, American children and adolescents spend nearly four hours watching television every day. What does the American Heart Association do for kids’ health? • Last year, we funded nearly $17.7 million in new research awards broadly related to children’s heart disease. This was part of the $149 million we funded in all aspects of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. Much of the funds go to basic biomedical research, and the outcomes of these studies can ultimately be applied to many types of congenital and acquired heart and blood vessel diseases. • We advocate for federal and state governments to improve physical education and nutrition wellness in schools. • We provide lifesaving CPR courses for middle school and high school students so they can properly react during emergency situations. • We’ve created the American Heart Association Teaching Gardens, planted in elementary schools across the country. These gardens become real-life learning laboratories where students can plant seeds, nurture growing plants, harvest produce and ultimately understand the value of good eating habits. • Inactive children are likely to become inactive adults. That’s why the National Football League and the American Heart Association have teamed up to create the NFL PLAY 60 Challenge, a program that inspires kids to get the daily recommended 60 minutes of physical activity in school and at . What are the goals of Jump Rope For Heart and Hoops For Heart? • Increase students’ knowledge of how their hearts work and the best way to take care of them. • those in our community who have been affected by heart disease and stroke. • Raise funds to support the American Heart Association’s efforts to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. Since 1978, Jump Rope For Heart and Hoops For Heart have raised more than $1.3 billion for research and educational programs.

HEART HERO Jaeven, age 11 I have two brothers, Mikey and Jadrien. I have a rare heart condition named Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return. I was only 2 weeks old when doctors performed a surgery to help my heart function correctly. I’m not allowed to play rough sports like football or hockey and cannot eat too much salt or fat. I feel great now. I always play basketball when I get home from school and eat healthy foods. I hope kids with heart conditions can have a normal life like me when they get older. For the past 2 years, I have been the top fundraiser at my school. My wish is to be the top fundraiser again this year because it is such an important cause to me.

11 Heart Facts for Morning Announcements (Use Jump Rope For Heart or Hoops For Heart where indicated.)

“Boys and girls … today’s Jump Rope For Heart message to share is:

1. Sugary drinks often have lots of calories. By some estimates, to burn off the calories from one 12-ounce can of soda, a 75-pound child would need to ride a bicycle at a fast pace for about 30 minutes. It could take a 150-pound adult about 25 minutes of walking at a moderate pace to burn off the same amount of calories.

2. Healthy hearts need regular physical activity! But a recent survey reported that more than 40% of high-school-age students play video or computer games for 3 or more hours daily, and more than 30% of these adolescents watch television for more than 3 hours on the average school day.

3. Being around cigarette smoke can lead to early death. In fact, about 41,000 people 35 and older died from the effects of secondhand smoke each year from 2005 to 2009.

4. The average man’s heart pumps almost 2,000 gallons of blood each day. That is how much water some fire departments’ tanker trucks can hold.

5. The extra calories in sugary drinks cannot only pack on the pounds, but they usually don’t provide the important nutrients your body needs. Some studies have even suggested that the body doesn’t recognize calories from sugary drinks the same way it recognizes calories from food.

6. Two 20-ounce sodas a day may sound like a good way to quench your thirst, but the sugar adds up. Drink them each day for a year and the sugar will total about 200 cups.

7. Capillaries are the smallest blood vessels in the body. How small are they? About ten of them equal the thickness of one human hair, and most are so small that only one blood cell can pass through them at a time.

8. A 16-ounce bottle of soda can have as much sugar as 20 sugar cubes.

We all know vegetables are healthy, but how many of are eating as many as we’re supposed too? Not enough! On average, fewer than 1.5% of children eat as many nonstarchy vegetables as recommended for good health.

12 9. Physical activity doesn’t just build strong muscles, it strengthens your bones and can reduce symptoms of depression. Talk about a one-two punch!

10. The human heart does a lot of work, but a man’s heart weighs about as much as two baseballs.

11. The heart pumps out about 83 gallons of blood each hour.

12. Each year, about 800,000 people die from heart-related conditions in the United States. From 2011 to 2012, this cost the United States about $316.6 billion in health care dollars.

13. A man’s heart pumps about 5.5 quarts of blood each minute. Six quarts equals 24 cups; one cup is the same amount as in the milk carton that comes with the typical school lunch.

14. Each year, more than 480,000 people die prematurely from using tobacco and being exposed to secondhand smoke. That’s more than the entire population of Kansas City, Missouri.

15. About 90 percent of Americans age 2 and up eat too much sodium – about the same as the number of American adults who own a cell phone.

16. A man’s heart beats about 108,000 times per day. In an average American man’s lifetime, that equals about 3 billion heartbeats!

17. Talk about having a big heart: The blue whale is the animal with the largest heart. The heart of one blue whale weighed nearly 1,500 pounds!

18. Lub-dub, lub-dub, lub-dub—that’s the sound your heart makes as the valves open and close. Catchy tune!

STEP TWO Enter your student donations. STEP THREE Click Manage Thank You Gifts to keep track of students you have given instant gifts to. STEP FOUR Order your school’s thank-you gifts. Don’t forget to click Submit. 1. Wrap up your event by using the online thank-you gift ordering system in your HeadQuarters. Instructions are located in your event kit or ask your AHA representative for help. 2. Convert any cash to a check or money order. 3. Place any Matching Gift Forms in your white postage paid envelope. (Donors receive these forms from their employers and turn them in to you. Forms must be included for us to receive the funds. You don’t need to fill out any information on the Matching Gift Forms.) 4. Even if your thank-you gifts were ordered online, please mail the completed Summary Gift Order Form (you can print directly from the online ordering dashboard) along with all of your checks, money orders and Matching Gift Forms in one of the white postage paid envelopes provided. A second envelope is included for late donations that come in after you’ve mailed off your original donations. 5. Print the Enter Student Donations page so you know how to distribute the thank-you gifts when they arrive. 6. For legal purposes, please keep the envelopes and permission slips for one year in case they would be needed later by the school or the American Heart Association. Announce what you raised and celebrate. After all that hard work and effort, it is important to let the school know the outcome and to thank all those involved. Here are a few ideas: • Announce the total raised at your event, on the morning announcements or at an assembly. • Send an all-staff email announcing the total donations raised, plus highlights from your event. • Post your event results and photos on your school website or monthly newsletter for parents and families. • Post your event total on your school marquee for parents and families. • Work with your students to create thank-you cards for any special volunteers, sponsors or donors. Follow through on your incentives and challenges. Did you set school challenges or student incentives that were tied to specific goals? Try to honor these challenges within a few weeks of the event so they stay fresh in the students’ minds.

22 Hand out thank-you gifts. • The student thank-you gifts should arrive four to six weeks after you send off your donations. • Try to distribute the gifts as soon as you receive them. If you have any issues with sizes or quantities, contact your American Heart Association representative. • Don’t forget that based on the amount your school raises, you will receive a U.S. Games gift certificate.
