  • ROBERT POWER (PUPPY POWER) Age: 31 From: Co Meath Prior To
ROBERT POWER (PUPPY POWER) Age: 31 From: Co Meath Prior to becoming one of the top National Hunt jockeys in Ireland, Robbie Power was a very promising show jumper, who won a silver medal at the European Young Rider Championships. His father, Captain Con Power was a member of the Irish team that dominated the Aga Khan Cup in the late ‘70s and rode the legendary stallion Rockbarton. Power senior left the Irish Defence Forces and show jumping to become a racehorse trainer, so his offspring had all the angles covered. Robbie plumped for racing while his sister, Elizabeth is one of Ireland’s most successful eventing riders and it was on her horse, Doonaveeragh O One that he returned to his roots to finish third in the Eventer’s Grand Prix at Hickstead last year. That was fun though. Racing is business although when his boss, Jessica Harrington feels a horse needs something different to help it rediscover its enthusiasm, she invariably gets Power to take it hunting. And on behalf of his sister, he is always on the lookout for an ex-racehourse that might have a future in the eventing world. He was 20 when he returned to racing and rode his first winner on his mother’s mare, Younevertoldme at Punchestown. He worked at Willie Mullins’ yard for a while before getting a job with the Closutton maestro’s equally legendary father, Paddy. Two months after his first winner, he notched up his first success as a conditional jockey for his new boss on Bob What in a valuable Leopardstown handicap.

Gold Cup Preview GOLD CUP PREVIEW Plenty of comparisons have already been made between Arkle and Best Mate, and they’re bound to become even more popular should the best staying chaser of the present day complete a hat-trick of Cheltenham Gold Cup victories in mid-March. Just for the record, the following paragraph from Chasers & Hurdlers 2002/3 may help to put into perspective just how good Arkle really was:- ‘In the 1965/6 season, Arkle ran four times before his third Cheltenham Gold Cup victory, starting off with a twenty-length win under 12-7 in the Gallaher Gold Cup at Sandown in November, setting a time record which still stands for the course and distance. Later that month, Arkle took his second successive Hennessy under 12-7, winning by fifteen lengths from Freddie who received 32 lb. Arkle made it three wins from three starts with victory by a distance in the King George VI Chase before again winning the Leopardstown Chase on his way to Cheltenham. Arkle conceded 42 lb to the second and third at Leopardstown; runner-up Height o’ Fashion, who went down by a neck, did most of her racing in Ireland but was worth a Timeform rating of 168+ whilst third-placed Splash, beaten a further fifteen lengths, had won the previous year’s Irish Grand National and earnt a Timeform rating of 157. Arkle gave them a 43 lb and 55 lb beating respectively and was 10/1-on when making it five out of five for the season when taking Best Mate jumps the second last in splendid isolation twelve month ago 1 Cheltenham Festival Issue the Gold Cup in a canter.

  • Altior As Brave As He Is Brilliant
THURSDAY, 14 MARCH 2019 QUORTO INJURED, GUINEAS OFF THE TABLE ALTIOR AS BRAVE Group 1 winner Quorto (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) has sustained an AS HE IS BRILLIANT injury in Dubai where he was wintering and will miss the G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas, Godolphin announced on Wednesday morning. The Godolphin homebred >TDN Rising Star= is undefeated in three starts to date, including the July 14 G2 Superlative S. and the Sept. 16 G1 National S. when last seen. He was one of the leading fancies for the first British Classic of the season, which will take place over Newmarket=s Rowley Mile on May 4. AUnfortunately Quorto has suffered a soft tissue injury in training in Dubai which will mean he will have to miss the 2000 Guineas,@ said trainer Charlie Appleby. "It's a real shame as we had high hopes for him this year. We'll know more when he's scanned for a second time in a couple of weeks. It's too early to say when he could be back in action but we've been here before with these injuries and we'll see how he recovers." Altior & Nico de Boinville | Racing Post by Emma Berry CHELTENHAM, UKCIt takes a great horse to win championship races, but it takes a true champion to fight his way back for glory just as it looks as if he is beaten. At Cheltenham on Wednesday, the remarkable Altior (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}) claimed not just his second G1 Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase but his fourth win at the Festival and his 18th consecutive victory to equal the winning streak of one of the track's great heroes, Big Buck's (Fr) (Cadoudal {Fr}).

  • Cheltenham Festival Winning Profiles 2017
Cheltenham Festival Winning Profiles 2017 (Races to be run Tuesday 14th March to Friday 17th March) www.againstthecrowd.co.uk Page 2 Key trends point to Festival winners The Cheltenham Festival represents the pinnacle of National Hunt racing. The G1 Championship races that take place at the venue every March are designed to find the best horses in specific divisions of the jump racing game. • The Champion Hurdle run on the Tuesday is designed to find the best 2-mile hurdler. • The Queen Mother Champion Chase is designed to find the best horse over the bigger obstacles at the minimum distance of 2-miles. The race is run on the Wednesday of the Festival • On Thursday Cheltenham Stages the Stayers’ Hurdle designed to find the best staying hurdler over a trip of 3-miles. • Thursday also plays host to the Ryanair Chase – a race which has become a Championship event for chasers specialising in a trip of 2 miles and 5 furlongs. • On the Friday of the Festival, we have the Gold Cup – the staying chasers’ Championship event run over 3 miles and 2 furlongs. These races are difficult to read. All the most talented horses in each division – at least those which are fit – tend to show up. All the major yards are represented. Every single runner is trying. Nothing is being saved for another day. The championship races are invariably run at a red-hot pace. This, in combination with the specific demands of the track, means that only horses at the top of their game, horses tuned to the moment and horses in receipt of luck in running, can prevail on the day.
