Msunduzi Municipal Library (formerly Te Natal Societ Library) has provided public library services for te people of Piermt aritzburg since 1850. On 1 April 2004, libraries and staff of Te Natal Societ were intg radt int te Msunduzi Municipalit as Msunduzi Municipal Library Services. Te main library, named te Bessie Head Library, and eight branch libraries, aim t provide a comprehensive library service t al residents of te Msunduzi Municipal area. THE BESSIE HEAD LIBRARY Te Natal Societ Library, te public library in Pietrmaritzburg, was administred by te Natal Societ for over 157 years fom 1850 untl 2004. On 1 April 2004 te Natal Societ Library and its staff were intgratd int te Msunduzi Municipalit and became te Msunduzi Municipal Library Services. In June 2005, during a major project where main steet s and major public buildings in Pietrmaritzburg were renamed, te Main Library building became et Bessie Head Library. Bessie Head 6 July 1937 ~ 26 April 1986 Bessie Amelia Emery was born on te 6t of July 1937 in Pietrmaritzburg. She was born in a mental hospital, te daughtr of a whit woman named Bessie Amelia Birch and an unnamed black fater. She was brought up in fostr care and ten in a mission orphanage. She obtained taching qualificatons in January 1957 and fom 1956 t 1958 she taught at Clairwood Coloured School in Durban. From 1958 t 1960 Bessie got involved in te world of journalism, working as a journalist for te Golden City Post and Drum magazine. At te beginning of 1960, she joined te Pan Aficanist Congress, a politcal movement. On te first of Septmber 1961 she married Harold Head and in March 1964 Bessie Head left Sout Afica on an exit permit t Botswana, where she lived and worked as a lecturer and writr untl her deat on April 26, 1986. MISSION STATEMENT Te Library Service mission is: To improve the quality of life of the people of the Msunduzi Municipal region by anticipating and meeting their informational needs and by providing an appropriately substantial and supportive contribution towards their educational, cultural and recreational needs. LIBRARY SERVICES BESSIE HEAD LIBRARY Ti s cental library has a wide range and choice of resources including books, large-print books, newspapers and periodicals, audio-books on CD and cassete, DVDs, videos, music CDs and scores, and CD ROMs for a l age groups fom infancy t old age. The Adults and Children’ s Lending Libraries and the Music/- Audio Visual Library provide te se resources for loan for recreaton, t provide general informaton and t support cultural and personal development. Teachers, parents and students may book for groups of learners t view a variet of set works and educatonal videos/DVDs at te Library. The Travelling Library takes books, including large-print, t a variet of venues in te suburban areas. The Housebound Service delivers books (including large-print) and audio-books t te infirm and te aged in teir own homes and residences for te aged. The Adults Reference Library has been in existnce for 157 years. It was founded by a group of prominent residents who hoped t promot te Colony by cole ctng and disseminatng accurat informaton. iT s library has an extnsive cole cton of reference matrials and informaton resources wit which it is able t support research, business, government and vocatonal endeavours and te needs of trtary level students. The Legal Deposit Collection was established in 1916, when tis library was one of te 5 libraries in Sout Afica accorded Legal Deposit status. Ti s privilege has helped make it int one of Sout Afica’s major research and informaton libraries. Legal Deposit libraries play a unique and very important role as custdians, in perpetuit, of tis county’s cultural wealt and informaton. Tr ough te Adult Reference Library al te citzens of Sout Afica have access t tis huge cole cton of Sout Afican books, pamphlets, government publicatons, periodicals and newspapers. The Periodicals Department offers, in additon t periodicals belonging t te Legal Deposit Cole cton, access t a smal range of publicatons purchased on subscripton and provides a public reading area. The Children’ s Reference Library has an extnsive cole cton of matrial t support te educatonal needs of primary and secondary school learners. BRANCH LIBRARIES Te re are eight branch libraries in te Msunduzi Municipal Library Services. eT re are tree large ones in Northdale, Georgetown and Eastwood, a smale r one in Ashburton and tree smal ones in Woodlands, Sobantu and Ashdown. MACS Library, in te MACS Centr in Alexandra Road, is established in an old blue taveli ng library bus. Te eight branch libraries, while offering a smale r range of matrials tan is available at te main library, endeavour t meet te needs of te communites tey serve by offering Adults and Children’s Lending services, and Children’s Reference services in support of educaton. A limitd Adult Reference service is available at Nortdale, Georgetwn and Eastwood libraries. Georgetwn provides a study area and a Traveli ng Library service t schools. AMERICAN CORNER The American Corner is a miniature public library on te First Floor of te Main Msunduzi Municipal Library which was established in partnership wit te Unitd Stats Embassy. Te coel cton consists of ficton, non-ficton and reference books, periodicals, DVDs and CD ROMs on America and/or by American autors. Computrs are available for online research on and about America. Programmes of talks, workshops and video showings are run, many of tem wit speakers brought out fom te Unitd Stats for tis purpose. Te Educaton Officer, fom te Consulat in Durban, visits regularly t meet wit anyone wishing t study in te Unitd Stats. FACILITIES FOR HIRE Various facilites are for hire.
