ABSTRACT RICE, CARL ROSS. Diocletian’s “Great Persecutions”: Minority Religions and the Roman Tetrarchy. (Under the direction of Prof. S. Thomas Parker) In the year 303, the Roman Emperor Diocletian and the other members of the Tetrarchy launched a series of persecutions against Christians that is remembered as the most severe, widespread, and systematic persecution in the Church’s history. Around that time, the Tetrarchy also issued a rescript to the Pronconsul of Africa ordering similar persecutory actions against a religious group known as the Manichaeans. At first glance, the Tetrarchy’s actions appear to be the result of tensions between traditional classical paganism and religious groups that were not part of that system. However, when the status of Jewish populations in the Empire is examined, it becomes apparent that the Tetrarchy only persecuted Christians and Manichaeans. This thesis explores the relationship between the Tetrarchy and each of these three minority groups as it attempts to understand the Tetrarchy’s policies towards minority religions. In doing so, this thesis will discuss the relationship between the Roman state and minority religious groups in the era just before the Empire’s formal conversion to Christianity. It is only around certain moments in the various religions’ relationships with the state that the Tetrarchs order violence. THE REAL 5TH-CENTURY PELAGIUS BRITANNICUS VS OUR ALLEGED 19TH-CENTURY “ULTIMATE PELAGIAN,” HENRICUS Bishop Augustine never met this monk and spiritual counselor Pelagius in person, even when he passed through Hippo in late 410. While in Rome, Pelagius had been the sponsor of a “moral rearmament” or “spiritual athleticism” movement. He seems to have been able to appeal particularly to affluent church ladies, whom he urged to set an example through works of virtue and ascetic living. The bishop saw the attitudes of Pelagius’s followers as dangerously similar to the error of Donatism, in that they fancied that they could by their own virtue set themselves apart from the common herd as ones upon whom God was particularly smiling. While Pelagius had gone off to the Holy Land and had there become an unwilling center of controversy as he visited sacred sites, others back in Africa were wading into this fracas with the hierarchical church authority Augustine. Whatever the merits of the case, of course the bishop’s side was going to prevail and the monk’s side was eventually going to be suppressed. How is this of relevance? Its relevance is due to the fact that, recently, in a book issued by the press of Thoreau’s alma mater Harvard University, Henry is being now characterized as the “ultimate Pelagian”! But here again the Editor's difficulty has been considerably lessened by the kindness of friends who were present at the lectures and have placed their note books at the disposal of the Trustees. WMF1 9/13/2004 5:36 PM Page 10 The Christian Movement 1 in the Second and Third Centuries 1Christians in the Roman Empire 2 The First Theologians 3Constructing Christian Churches 1Christians in the Roman Empire We begin at the beginning of the second century, a time of great stress as Christians struggled to explain their religious beliefs to their Roman neighbors, to create liturgies that expressed their beliefs and values, and to face persecution and martyrdom cour- ageously. It may seem odd to omit discussion of the life and times of Christianity’s founder, but scholarly exploration of the first century of the common era is itself a field requiring a specific expertise. Rather than focus on Christian beginnings directly, we will refer to them as necessitated by later interpretations of scripture, liturgy, and practice. Second-century Christians were diverse, unorganized, and geographically scattered. Paul’s frequent advocacy of unity among Christian communities gives the impression of a unity that was in fact largely rhetorical. Before we examine Christian movements, however, it is important to remind ourselves that Christians largely shared the world- view and social world of their neighbors. Polarizations of “Christians” and “pagans” obscure the fact that Christians were Romans. They participated fully in Roman culture and economic life; they were susceptible, like their neighbors, to epidemic disease and the anxieties and excitements of city life. As such, they were repeatedly shocked to be singled out by the Roman state for persecution and execution on the basis of their faith. The physical world of late antiquity The Mediterranean world was a single political and cultural unit. -

Authority and Duty: Columbanus and the Primacy of Rome Damian Bracken Abstract. Columbanus’s letters are among the earliest examples of literature written by an Irishman and one of the first acknowledgements of the primacy of Rome from the pen of a barbarian. Many scholars have discerned a truculence, if not arrogance, in his letters to the popes. In many cases, his direct manner of speaking has obscured for a modern readership the extent of his knowledge of the nature of Roman primacy and his acceptance of many of the principles on which that primacy rests. Particularly in his letter to pope Boniface IV, Columbanus draws on these principles, in the first instance to acknowledge the primacy of the bishop of Rome, but also to remind the pope of the duties of leadership. Columbanus wrote Letter 5 at the time of the Three Chapters controversy when, following the doctrinal wavering of pope Vigilius, the churches of the West had either broken off communion with Rome or viewed its bishop with suspicion. In that context, Colum- banus’s call on the bishop of Rome to fulfil his role of ‘watchman’ of the church was less an affront to his dignity than an affirmation of his authority. February 11, 2018 Mingling of the Body and Blood of Christ! Last Saturday, I received the following comment after the 5 pm Mass, "Father, I enjoyed reading your explanation of the mixing of the water and wine during the preparation of the gifts. I’ve noticed this hundreds of times but never understood it. I didn’t know that the priest was praying a silent prayer at that time. That prayer is quite inspirational. I now understand that the wine represents Jesus and the water represents us. This strengthens my understanding of our communion with Christ at Mass. I have also noticed that while we sing the Lamb of God, the priest, after breaking the host, places a small piece of the host into the Chalice. Can you explain why he does this?” My answer was simple, “At that very moment, the priest says another silent prayer: ‘May this mingling of the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ bring eternal life to us who receive it.’” This is a powerful moment at Mass. I’d like to share with you an explanation of it found in Edward Sri’s book, A Biblical Walk Through The Mass: Understanding what we say and do in the Liturgy. In chapter 23, Agnus Dei: The Fraction, Commingling and the "Lamb of God", Sri says, "The ritual known as the commingling was used at one time to express the unity of the Church. In Rome, the pope had a small particle of the consecrated host, called the fermentum (Latin for leaven), sent to priests in the city, who placed it in their chalices as a sign of their union with the Bishop of Rome. -

ABSTRACT In the early nineteenth century, the Church of England faced a crisis of self- understanding as a result of political and social changes occurring in Britain. The church was forced to determine what it meant to be the established church of the nation in light of these new circumstances. In the 1830s, a revival took place within the Church of England which prompted a renewal of the theology and practice of the church, including the Eucharist. This revival, known as the Oxford Movement, breathed new life into the High Church party. A heightened emphasis was placed on the sacramental life and on the Eucharist as the focus of worship. Adherents of the Oxford Movement developed a Eucharistic theology which promoted a closer connection between the elements and Christ’s presence in the Eucharist than did the earlier Anglican tradition. One of the exponents of this Eucharistic theology was Robert Isaac Wilberforce (1802- 1857). The second son of anti-slavery crusader William Wilberforce, Robert was raised in a family of prominent Anglican Evangelicals. At the University of Oxford he came under the influence of his tutor, John Keble, who was one of the four leaders of the Oxford Movement during its heyday. The Gorham case, whose focus was ostensibly the question of baptismal regeneration, turned into a debate on the state’s control over the established church. The Eucharistic Ecclesiology of Nicolas Afanassieff: Prospects and Challenges for Contemporary Ecumenical Dialogue By Richard R. Gaillardetz One of the most fruitful theological developments to emerge out of the Second Vatican Council is the exploration of the concept of communion as a foundation for contemporary eccesiology.1 Indeed, the concept of communion or koinonia, has become an increasingly central category within ecumenical dialogues.2 Many are unaware, however, of how much this ecclesiology of communion owes to an earlier ecclesiological trajectory, the eucharistic ecclesiology of Nicolas Afanassieff, a Russian Orthodox theologian who effected an ecclesiological renewal within Orthodoxy and indirectly influenced much of the renewal in Roman Catholic ecclesiology reflected in the documents of Vatican II. In this article we wish to reconsider the twentieth century origins of this eucharistic ecclesiology in the writings of Afanassieff and its contributions to contemporary ecclesiology and ecumenical relations between East and West. In the first part of this essay I will explore the origins and influences on Afanassieff's thought followed by a sketch of its defining features. This will be followed by a second section which will critically assess his eucharistic ecclesiology and explore its potential for both the renewal of ecclesiology in Roman Catholicism and the furthering of ecumenical dialogue between East and West. Afanassieff's Theological Sources A proper understanding of Afanassieff's ecclesiology requires that we look first to the theological milieu in which he developed his thought. Nocturnal Adoration societies, Perpetual Adoration groups, national associations of the faithful promoting organized visits to the Blessed Sacrament, Holy Hours before the tabernacle, monthly, weekly and even daily exposition of the Eucharist in churches and chapels, in one country after another, have become commonplace. What to make of all of this? Is this another form of pious eccentricity, or is it founded on authentic Catholic doctrine and grounded on the solid rock of Christian revelation? It is authentic Catholic doctrine and it rests on the unchangeable truth of our revealed faith. But it needs to be explained, and the explanation is a classic example of what we call development of doctrine.
