I am here with Frank Smallwood at his home in Shelburne, Vermont. Professor Smallwood, I would like to start out today finding out what made you go to Dartmouth as an undergraduate. FRANK SMALLWOOD: Okay. That's a good place to start. Actually, it was a combination of things. I was born in New Jersey, northern New Jersey, and I grew up in New Jersey. I then went to Lawrenceville School for three years, which is in New Jersey down by Princeton. Then I was drafted. This is now 1945 as the war was coming to an end and I was assigned to Fort Dix, New Jersey. So I spent my entire life in New Jersey and I decided (this is a horrible thing to say) [Laughter] but I decided that I wanted to get out of New Jersey and I didn't have strong preferences. Most of my classmates from Lawrenceville went to Princeton. I just didn't think that made any sense, so my sister's husband, my older sister's husband had gone to Dartmouth and he was talking up Dartmouth. He had just gotten out of the service and he said, "You ought to go to Dartmouth.

We have come together to celebrate what you might call a family tradition: for what could be more solid than the links between the United Nations family and the Rockefeller family? We owe the very soil on which UN headquarters stands to John D. Rockefeller Junior. Had it not been for the godsend of that former slaughterhouse site, the United Nations would not be based in New York City today. The way things looked at the time, we were more likely to end up in Flushing Meadow or Philadelphia. Unlike W.C. Fields, I have nothing against Philadelphia. But I think the UN is much more at home in New York. Nelson Rockefeller, who advised his father on the acquisition of the land, did much to shape our contribution to the skyline too. He brought in Wallace Harrison to work with the international architects' committee that designed the Secretariat. And he persuaded Le Corbusier to design the General Assembly building. Thanks to Nelson Rockefeller's architectural legacy, no twenty-first century Trump Tower — however tall — could ever trump our profile in the neighbourhood. The Rockefellers' contributions have continued throughout the history of the United Nations. Laurance Rockefeller has been a staunch supporter of our work on the environment. Laurance, your generosity is legendary and I am deeply grateful that you were able to join us this evening.

Based on archival research, primary source materials, and secondary source materials, it is concluded that conservative candidate Barry Goldwater faced numerous instances when his campaign could have been defeated by Republican challengers, campaign blunders, and internal party factions. This thesis focuses on liberal Republican Nelson Rockefeller’s campaign with the intention of articulating the fracturing of the Republican Party in the early 1960s. Rockefeller’s quest for the nomination is emblematic of the changing nature of presidential politics in the post-World War II era leading to changes in voter preferences, campaign tactics, and ultimately the path to the White House.

Barrett University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign1 [email protected] Abstract: Nelson Rockefeller, grandson of John D. Rockefeller, experienced his first electoral victory when he was elected governor of New York in 1958. Despite Rockefeller’s abundant use of his family’s fortune to dominate New York politics for the next fifteen years, he did not face significant questions about his practices until Gerald Ford nominated him to serve as vice president in 1974. This article examines Rockefeller’s use of money during an era of weak campaign-finance laws to explore the unique status of wealthy politicians in postwar New York and the role of money in American politics. McLay Ph.D. Candidate, Department of History University of Edinburgh Edinburgh, Scotland [email protected] © 2012 by Mark McLay I was awarded a Rockefeller Archive Center (RAC) Grant-in-Aid to support research for my doctoral project which investigates how, why, and with what success the Republican party was able to challenge President Lyndon B. Johnson’s Great Society agenda between 1964 and 1968. My nine-day visit to the RAC in Spring 2012 marked the final stop on a two month long, cross-country trip which included research at libraries and archives in Texas, California, Michigan, Virginia, District of Columbia, and finally, New York. Before reaching the RAC I had thus already explored the papers of President Lyndon B. Johnson and many prominent Republicans including: Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, John Tower, Gerald Ford, Melvin Laird, Hugh Scott, Edward Brooke, and Jacob Javits. The bulk of my research at the RAC focused on the Personal Papers (RG4) of Nelson A. Rockefeller (NAR) and the NAR Gubernatorial Papers (RG15), while I also spent a short time with the Papers of Winthrop Rockefeller (RG9). Traditionally, historians studying politics during the 1960s have centered their attention on the failures of liberalism and splits in the Democratic party, in addition to focusing on the goals of the Kennedy and Johnson administrations and their pursuit of the New Frontier and the Great Society. Recent scholarly approaches, however, have turned to examining the emerging success of conservatism and the Republicans.
