Largely a man-made landscape, the Somerset Levels is steeped in history and legend. It was the cradle of Christianity in England, the stronghold of Arthur and Alfred, and the scene of Monmouth's bloody Pitchfork Rebellion. Most enduring but perhaps most extraordinary is man's centuries-old endeavour to convert these flat tracts of land from low-lying sea marsh to brackish wasteland, then from semi-drained land to a completely controlled environment. This work considers the Somerset Levels' rich historical associations and its evolution as a landscape. The Mirror and Me, Common (Musician) , 2005, 0976867400, 9780976867401. She could not stand for her own rights because, in a real sense, she had no rights.Throughout this interesting and informative book, the author shows you the difference between suffering hardships and suffering the infringement of ones rights. She says that every truly consecrated Christian must be willing to give up the right to the normal comforts of life, to physical health and safety, to the privacy of business, and to time, friends, romance, family, and home. There are numerous illustrations and frank discussions that will provide you with fascinating material. This is especially good material for mission groups and churches. Cowboy Artists of America Twenty-Sixth Annual Exhibition, 1991, , 1991, 0963105507, 9780963105509. My Way to Anywhere, Lisette Brodey , 2013, 0981583601, 9780981583600. Dr. Jean Lisette Brodey, a retired Temple University journalism professor, was a part-time poet in her late 20s and early 30s. During that time, she wrote hundreds of poems, with several of them published in national and international poetry magazines. For the most part, she wrote poetry that focuses on people of different ages and backgrounds. Some of her subjects were extraordinarily close to the author, whereas others, like President Franklin D. Roosevelt, were iconic figures. The people who affected the author's life are expressed through imagery, abstract concepts, and word portraits. As a mother, Dr. Brodey would read children's poetry from her favorite books to her son and daughter. She began writing her own book but never finished it. Several of those children's poems are also included in this collection. My Way to Anywhere is divided into eight sections: On the Persistence of Memory, My Way to Anywhere, The Muse, Friendship, For Children, In Memory of the Master: A Tribute to Edgar Lee Masters, Remembrance, and Road to Love. The Oxford Handbook of Postcolonial Studies provides a comprehensive overview of the latest scholarship in postcolonial studies, while also considering possible future developments in the field. Original chapters written by a worldwide team of contritbuors are organised into five cross-referenced sections, 'The Imperial Past', 'The Colonial Present', 'Theory and Practice', 'Across the Disciplines', and 'Across the World'. The chapters offer both country-specific and comparative approaches to current issues, offering a wide range of new and interesting perspectives. The Handbook reflects the increasingly multidisciplinary nature of postcolonial studies and reiterates its continuing relevance to the study of both the colonial pastin its multiple manifestations and the contemporary globalized world. Taken together, these essays, the dialogues they pursue, and the editorial comments that surround them constitute nothing less than a blueprint for the future of a much-contested but intellectually vibrant and politically engaged field. The fee is too enticing to pass up, although the restaurateur is not negotiable on the potting site...the plates must be made at the restaurant in Santa Fe. Once onsite, Hubie is immersed in the politics, procedures and polemics of the restaurant business. In an effort to negotiate the egos and agendas, Hubie invites the grillardin for cocktails. The inebriated grill cook insists on snoozing in Hubie's truck, but the next morning, Hubie finds the garde manger there instead...not breathing and as cold as his menu items. Before Hubie can recover from the shock, things spiral out of control at Schnitzel, forcing the eatery to close its doors. Unwilling to cede defeat, Hubie rallies the troupe, and they reopen with a Mexican-Austrian fusion menu. The Magi of Futurity is a story told in two parts. The first part introduces a 14-year-old girl named Anita who is growing up in a rural setting during the depression era. By repeating a simple prayer, Anita opens a line of communication (while in the dream state) to a future aspect of her soul group who is studying to become a Dream Doctor. For two magical weeks in December 1932, Anitas consciousness is expanded to help her learn the secrets to living a happy life. The second part of the story reintroduces Anita as a 33-year-old woman just coming out of a divorce, who once again is seeking the elusive state of happiness. Anitas future aspect returns again to help her through this painful stage of her life. This time, Anita is able to open a conscious channel of communication with her spiritual counterpart. The Magi of Futurity is a simple, sweet story that answers some of the basic questions all seekers of happiness are hoping to find. HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Maxwell Lewis Williams August 2020 © 2020 Maxwell Lewis Williams HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA Maxwell Lewis Williams Cornell University 2020 This dissertation theorizes a contemporary hip-hop genre that I call “neo-bohemian,” typified by rapper Kendrick Lamar and his collective, Black Hippy. I argue that, by reclaiming the origins of hipness as a set of hybridizing Black cultural responses to the experience of modernity, neo- bohemian rappers imagine and live out liberating ways of being beyond the West’s objectification and dehumanization of Blackness. In turn, I situate neo-bohemian hip-hop within a history of Black musical expression in the United States, Senegal, Mali, and South Africa to locate an “aesthetics of existence” in the African diaspora. By centering this aesthetics as a unifying component of these musical practices, I challenge top-down models of essential diasporic interconnection. Instead, I present diaspora as emerging primarily through comparable responses to experiences of paradigmatic racial violence, through which to imagine radical alternatives to our anti-Black global society. Overall, by rethinking the heuristic value of hipness as a musical and lived Black aesthetic, the project develops an innovative method for connecting the aesthetic and the social in music studies and Black studies, while offering original historical and musicological insights into Black metaphysics and studies of the African diaspora.

  • The Life & Rhymes of Jay-Z, an Historical Biography
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: THE LIFE & RHYMES OF JAY-Z, AN HISTORICAL BIOGRAPHY: 1969-2004 Omékongo Dibinga, Doctor of Philosophy, 2015 Dissertation directed by: Dr. Barbara Finkelstein, Professor Emerita, University of Maryland College of Education. Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the life and ideas of Jay-Z. It is an effort to illuminate the ways in which he managed the vicissitudes of life as they were inscribed in the political, economic cultural, social contexts and message systems of the worlds which he inhabited: the social ideas of class struggle, the fact of black youth disempowerment, educational disenfranchisement, entrepreneurial possibility, and the struggle of families to buffer their children from the horrors of life on the streets. Jay-Z was born into a society in flux in 1969. By the time Jay-Z reached his 20s, he saw the art form he came to love at the age of 9—hip hop— become a vehicle for upward mobility and the acquisition of great wealth through the sale of multiplatinum albums, massive record deal signings, and the omnipresence of hip-hop culture on radio and television. In short, Jay-Z lived at a time where, if he could survive his turbulent environment, he could take advantage of new terrains of possibility. This dissertation seeks to shed light on the life and development of Jay-Z during a time of great challenge and change in America and beyond. THE LIFE & RHYMES OF JAY-Z, AN HISTORICAL BIOGRAPHY: 1969-2004 An historical biography: 1969-2004 by Omékongo Dibinga Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Maryland, College Park, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2015 Advisory Committee: Professor Barbara Finkelstein, Chair Professor Steve Klees Professor Robert Croninger Professor Derrick Alridge Professor Hoda Mahmoudi © Copyright by Omékongo Dibinga 2015 Acknowledgments I would first like to thank God for making life possible and bringing me to this point in my life.

“THE BIGGEST COLORED SHOW ON EARTH”: HOW MINSTRELSY HAS DEFINED PERFORMANCES OF AFRICAN AMERICAN IDENTITY FROM 19TH CENTURY THEATER TO HIP HOP A Senior Thesis submitted to the Faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences of Georgetown University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in American Studies By Laura-Brynn Neuhoff Washington, D.C. April 26, 2017 “THE BIGGEST COLORED SHOW ONE EARTH”: HOW MINSTRELSY HAS DEFINED PERFORMANCES OF AFRICAN AMERICAN IDENTITY FROM 19TH CENTURY THEATER TO HIP HOP Laura-Brynn Neuhoff Thesis Adviser: Marcia Chatelain, Ph.D. ABSTRACT This senior thesis seeks to answer the following question: how and why is the word “minstrel” and associated images still used in American rap and hip hop performances? The question was sparked by the title of a 2005 rap album by the group Little Brother: The Minstrel Show. The record is packaged as a television variety show, complete with characters, skits, and references to blackface. This album premiered in the heat of the Minstrel Show Debate when questions of authenticity and representation in rap and hip hop engaged community members. My research is first historical: I analyze images of minstrelsy and reviews of minstrel shows from the 1840s into the twentieth century to understand how the racist images persisted and to unpack the ambiguity of the legacy of black blackface performers. I then analyze the rap scene from the late 2000-2005, when the genre most poignantly faced the identity crisis spurred by those referred to as “minstrel” performers. Having conducted interviews with the two lyricists of Little Brother: Rapper Big Pooh and Phonte, I primarily use Little Brother as my center of research, analyzing their production in conjunction with their spatial position in the hip hop community.

Tienes, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2017 How do aspiring artists in the Pittsburgh rap music scene propel themselves onto the national stage? Through interactions with others in the local rap music scene, artists develop the skills, practices, and dispositions that allow them credibly to “do hip-hop”. Through ethnographic interviews of 25 aspiring artists and 2 years of observation of live performances, studio recording sessions, social media interactions, and other events, I trace the process of accountability through which artists demonstrate that they are in and of the culture of hip-hop: They assess themselves and others according to the rap music credo of “keeping it real,” and enforce adherence to this central criterion of artistic and personal integrity.
