Cairo‘s Tahrir Square and the Kasr Dobara Evangelical Church (KDEC) continued to be the principle focal points up to and including the June 30 uprising some three years later. During this period of massive change in the history of Egypt, the Coptic church realized the need for political action in the face of persecution, and Kasr Dobara Evangelical Church was a focal example of leadership and service in this new Christian activism. For the first time in the history of Christianity in Egypt, Christians ventured out of the sanctuary of their churches to protest against the traditional oppression of government. • ,t I ON CANA OF GALILEE: 67 I A SERMON BY THECOPTIC PATRIARCH BENJAMIN I Alexandria humbly asks an anchorite for "a word" as if he were a novice.' The sermonalso provides much information that is of historical, social, and theolog ical interest. Life ofthe Patriarch ON CANA OF GALILEE: Benjamin was born around AD 590 in Barshiit, a region in the western Delta, from two "very rich parents." At the age of thirty he entered the monastery of A SERMON BY THE Canopus and became a monk under the spiritual guidance of a tested elder named Theonas.' After spending some time in the monastery, the elder introduced him to Patriarch Andronicus Maged S.A. Before his death, during the Persian Occupation, Andronicus named Benjamin as his successor.' Chapter Four Christianity in Sudan and Ethiopia William B. Anderson & Ogbu U. Kalu "Ah, land of rustling wings, beyond the rivers of Kush." (Isaiah 18:1) Sudan is a biblical land. It is not at the center, like the Holy Land-or even a major player like Egypt, Syria and Babylon. It is not part of the central geography: the fertile crescent or the Mediterranean world. Yet it is not outside like Japan or the Americas. Kush is found in our Bibles 48 times. It begins early: Kush is one of the sons ofHam.62 Kush is a clear geographical place, its northern boundary very distinct. Ezekiel talks of the whole of Egypt "from Migdol (in the north) to Syene (i.e. Aswan), as far as the border of Kush."63 For at Aswan, the fertile Nile valley, which south of the Delta is 16 miles wide, narrows drastically, as the rocky hills crowd to the edge of the river, forming the Nile's first cataract. It is the heart of the Sahara desert, with the world's longest river winding through it. Kush is all the land south of the first cataract-Aswan. Kush is also racial. At Aswan, the Black or Brown, the Negroid people began. Kush meant the black race. The Nile was the most accessible road to reach that race. Beginning with Egypt's first dynasty, Egypt sought gold and slaves there. Kushites were noted as warriors. And finally, Egypt's 25th dynasty was Kushite: Napata in Nubia conquered and ruled Egypt, and appeared in the prophecies of Isaiah. -

MARK B Y S T E P H A N H Ü L L E R By the ninth century a simple but quite beautiful alabaster chair was transferred from Alexandria to Venice. For centuries thereafter it un- doubtedly languished in the crypts beneath the newly built Basilica di San Marco. When it resurfaced again in 1534 it was identified as the original Episcopal throne of St. Mark and erected with this title behind the high altar of the basilica1. The Jesuit scholar Giampietro Secchi wrote a 390 page study of the object entitled La cattedra Alessandrina di San Marco evangelista e martire justifying this idenitification. The relic has been identified as the Cattedra di San Marco or the Sedia di San Marco ever since. Secchi’s interpretation of the throne stood essentially unchallenged until the Byzantine art scholar Andre Grabar’s 1954 article entitled “La ‘Sedia de San Marco’ à Venise” argued that the object was really an Alexandrian reliquary from the sixth or seventh century. Grabar’s study was widely influential until 1989 when another art histo- rian, Mab van Lohuizen-Mulder, essentially argued on behalf of the original claims for the object — viz. that it was an Alexandrian Episco- pal throne. In essence then scholarship has now come full circle. Van Lohuizen- Mulder argued that that the throne must have originally resided in the martyrium of St. -

The leader in this disgraceful attack on the followers of Christ (possibly at the instigation of Abraham) was Dunaan, a Jewish sectary, who besieged Nagran, and tortured the Christians with every form of cruelty. Numerous a.uthoritiee1 bear testimony to the unflinching courage of Aretas, to his re fusal to submit to the rites of Judaism, and to his bold con fession of faith in the Trinity and in the Incarnation. It was not long before vengeance overtook Dunaa.n. The Emperor of A.xum, Elesbaa.n by name,2 at the request of the Coptic Patriarch of Alexandria, Timotheus III. (520 to 536 A.D.) raised an army of 120,000 men, crossed the Red Sea in twenty-three ships, and utterly defeated the enemy. He restored Nagran io the Christians, and placed a son of the martyred Aretas on th~ throne, thus founding an Ethiopian Christian dynasty, which ruled over the Homer ites for several generations. The Ahuna Cyril was appointed, about 650 A.D., by Benjamin, Patriarch of Alexandria. He sent with Cyril a learned and saintly monk, named Tecla Haimanot, who was the founder of Monasticism among the Ethiopians, and has ever since been held in high honour by the Abyssinian nation. In the year 689 A.D. a priest arrived in Egypt, from " India," with a request that Simon, who had succeeded Isaac as Patriarch of Alexandria a few months previously, would consecrate a Bishop for his country, who might retum with him. -

This promise was fulfilled by the flight of the Holy Family from the face of the tyrant Herod to find refuge among the Gentiles. Thus Jesus Christ came during His childhood to Egypt to lay by Himself the foundation stone of His Church in Egypt which has be- come one of the four primary "Sees" in the world, among the churches of Jerusalem, Antioch and Rome, joined later by the "See" of Constantinople. The star of the Egyptian Church shone through the School of Alexandria which taught Christendom the allegoric and spiritual methods in interpreting the Scripture, and was the leader in defending the Orthodox faith on an ecumenical level. The Christian monastic movement in all its forms started in Egypt, attracting the heart of the Church towards the desert, to practice the angelic inner life. -

This “sign” that Constantine saw, a combination of the Greek letters Chi (X) and Rho (P), was an ancient Christian symbol that combined the first two letters in the name Christ 2. The legend continues, that after being spoken to by God, Constantine was inspired to convert to Christianity, end the persecution of Christians, and make Christianity the legal religion of the Empire 3.
