2014 United Solo Festival Guide GREETINGS FROM UNITED SOLO Dear Friends, Now in its fifth anniversary season, the United Solo Theatre Festival, the world’s largest solo theatre festival, celebrates a dynamic expansion. The inaugural United Solo in 2010 was a two-week event, but the festival will span over ten weeks in 2014. We will present over 130 productions, including shows by American artists from 25 states and international performances from six continents. During our five seasons, we shared almost 500 productions created by renowned artists and emerging talents. We presented selected performances in our overseas showcase, United Solo Europe, and recommended scripts for publication by the digital library Indie Theater Now. Our shows reached thousands of audience members, attracted media attention, helped us fundraise for the Actors Fund, and ultimately built a festival that unites people from around the globe. But these five years are just the beginning of our mission. The success of United Solo has been made possible thanks to so many people. I extend my gratitude to our patrons for their continued interest and appreciation, our artists for their inspiring work, our business partners for their commitment and support, United Solo Academy members for setting the highest standards for our organization, our festival team and volunteers for their dedication, and the Theatre Row staff for providing us with our home in New York. Each page of this program is an invitation for you to celebrate with us and enjoy as many shows as you like. Happy Quinquennial! These are artists who create captivating performances outside the Festival. They remind us of the immense power of a singular performer and the possibilities of solo storytelling. This year’s list of nominees for the United Solo Special Award includes: Hannah Cabell in Grounded, Billy Crystal in 700 Sundays, Jim Dale in Just Jim Dale, Ruben Santiago-Hudson in How I Learned What I Learned, Kevin Spacey in Clarence Darrow, John Douglas Thompson in Satchmo at the Waldorf, and Michael Urie in Buyer and Cellar. Last year, the United Solo Special Award went to Fiona Shaw, who accepted the recognition at the Festival’s Closing Ceremony. In her remarks, Ms. Shaw described the solo genre as “concertos” with the audience being “the orchestra, as much as anything else.” Previous recipients also include: Anna Deavere Smith, Patti LuPone, and John Leguizamo. The winner of the 2014 United Solo Special Award will be announced at the Festival’s Closing Gala on November 23, 2014, held at Theatre Row in New York. More details about the nominees can be found at www.unitedsolo.org/us/uaward-2014. • Winners are selected by an independent panel of nearly sixty theatre professionals. • Nominees have been recommended by the United Solo Academy as well as independent theatregoers.
