'DEPRIVED OF THEIR LIBERTY': ENEMY PRISONERS AND THE CULTURE OF WAR IN REVOLUTIONARY AMERICA, 1775-1783 by Trenton Cole Jones A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland June, 2014 © 2014 Trenton Cole Jones All Rights Reserved Abstract Deprived of Their Liberty explores Americans' changing conceptions of legitimate wartime violence by analyzing how the revolutionaries treated their captured enemies, and by asking what their treatment can tell us about the American Revolution more broadly. I suggest that at the commencement of conflict, the revolutionary leadership sought to contain the violence of war according to the prevailing customs of warfare in Europe. These rules of war—or to phrase it differently, the cultural norms of war— emphasized restricting the violence of war to the battlefield and treating enemy prisoners humanely. Only six years later, however, captured British soldiers and seamen, as well as civilian loyalists, languished on board noisome prison ships in Massachusetts and New York, in the lead mines of Connecticut, the jails of Pennsylvania, and the camps of Virginia and Maryland, where they were deprived of their liberty and often their lives by the very government purporting to defend those inalienable rights. My dissertation explores this curious, and heretofore largely unrecognized, transformation in the revolutionaries' conduct of war by looking at the experience of captivity in American hands. Throughout the dissertation, I suggest three principal factors to account for the escalation of violence during the war. From the onset of hostilities, the revolutionaries encountered an obstinate enemy that denied them the status of legitimate combatants, labeling them as rebels and traitors.

  • Sunday of the Holy Myrrhbearing Women
Sunday of the Holy Myrrhbearing Women The myrrh-bearers had brought funeral spices and ointments to finish committing Christ’s body to the grave. They were the first to see the empty tomb and were instructed by the risen Lord to bring the joyful news to the apostles. Sts. Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus are also commemorated on this day. There are eight women who are generally identified as the myrrh-bearers. Each of the four Gospels gives a different aspect of the roles of these eight women at the cross and at the tomb on Easter morning, perhaps since the eight women arrived in different groups and at different times. The eight were: Mary Magdalene Mary, the Theotokos (the Virgin Mary) Joanna Salome Mary the wife of Cleopas (mother of James) Susanna Mary of Bethany (sister of Lazarus) Martha of Bethany (sister of Lazarus) These eight women had been together throughout Jesus’ public ministry. Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Susanna, and others (Luke 8:3) are described as providing for Jesus out of their possessions. These same women also faithfully followed him from Galilee and came up with him to Jerusalem. Troparion (Tone 2) – The Noble Joseph, When he had taken down Your most pure Body from the tree, Wrapped it in fine linen and anointed it with spices, And placed it in a new tomb. But You did rise on the third day, O Lord, Granting the world great mercy. Troparion (Tone 2) – The angel came to the myrrhbearing women at the tomb and said: Myrrh is meet for the dead; But Christ has shown Himself a stranger to corruption! So proclaim: the Lord is risen, Granting the world great mercy! Kontakion (Tone 2) – You did command the myrrh-bearers to rejoice, O Christ! By Your Resurrection, You did stop the lamentation of Eve, O God! You did command Your apostles to preach: The Savior is Risen! By permission of the Orthodox Church in America (www.oca.org) Icon located at St.

Descendants of John Alford b. about 1645 Three Generations This file provides all of what is currently known of the first three generations of John Alford. Folks who would like more information on the descendants of sons James or John should select them from the previous page. 1. John Alford #4656 b. about 1645, probably Virginia, m. Wife is Unknown #4657. John died Mar 14 1710, New Kent Co., VA. The late Tressie Bowman, publisher of the ALFORD FAMILY BULLETIN in a family group record provided to AAFA used the St. Peter's Parish Register and Boddie to compile a family as is shown in this record. Although the church record does prove a John Alford had the children listed there is nothing to prove it was the John who died in 1710. Please note that there is no proof that James was the son of John. There are some who make a William Alford the father of James. It is true that there was a William Alford in the area at the same time who had about equal circumstances as James. We lean to John but you can take your pick. There are important notes at the records of most of the children. Please don't draw any conclusions about them without first reviewing those records. John's date of birth is nothing more than a guess- as is his place of birth. See also Boddie, John HISTORICAL SOUTHERN FAMILIES, Vol XII, page 57-58. His death was reported in The Parish Register of Saint Peter's New Kent County, Virginia 1680-1787 published by The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in the state of Virginia, 1904, Richmond.

REVOLUTIONARY MAIL BAG GOVERNOR THOMAS SIM LEE'S CORRESPONDENCE 1779 -1782 FROM ORIGINAL PENCIL DRAWING HY ROBERT S. PEABODY, IN POSSESSION OE AUTHOR. REVOLUTIONARY MAIL BAG: GOVERNOR THOMAS SIM LEE'S CORRESPONDENCE, 1779-1782 Edited by HELEN LEE PEABODY HE contents of a chest of several hundred unpublished letters T and papers, belonging to Thomas Sim Lee, Governor of Maryland during the American Revolution, form the basis of the following pages.1 The chest, containing these letters and private papers, together with the rest of his personal possessions, was inherited by his youngest son, John Lee, the only unmarried child still living with his father at the time of his death. John Lee, my grandfather, left his inheritance, the old family mansion, " Needwood," in Frederick County, and all it contained, to my father, Charles Carroll Lee. In this manner the chest of letters descended to the present generation. 1 There is no life of Lee. Standard accounts are to be found in the Dictionary of American Biography, XI, 132, and H.E. Buchholz, Governors of Maryland (Baltimore, 1908), pp. 9-13. 1 2 MARYLAND HISTORICAL MAGAZINE The papers—designated hereafter as the T. S. Lee Collection— when found, comprised over a thousand items. The papers were arranged in packages, tied with tape, and tabulated, which facili tated the onerous task of sorting and reading. Many had to be laid aside, as totally unsuited to a compilation of this kind. These comprised invoices, bills of lading, acknowledgements by London firms of hogsheads of tobacco received, orders for furniture, clothing, household utensils—all, in short, that made up the inter change of life between our Colonial ancestors and British mer chants.

Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Susanna, and others (Luke 8:3) are described as providing for Jesus out of their possessions.
