MEDIA RELEASE 8 May 2009 Melbourne first on the east coast to switch on digital radio Commercial radio stations in Melbourne MIX, GOLD, SEN, 3AW, 3MP, FOX, MAGIC, TRIPLE M, NOVA, VEGA, Sport 927, Radar, Pink Radio, Koffee and NovaNation create radio history on Monday, 11 May 2009 when they begin broadcasting the first permanent DAB+ digital radio services on the east coast of Australia. Joan Warner, chief executive officer of Commercial Radio Australia the industry body that has driven the move to digital radio said Monday was another milestone for the industry in Australia following the switch on of DAB+ digital radio in Perth last week. “The possibilities for digital radio in the sport loving state of Melbourne are very exciting. AFL final calls on radio with scrolling text scores and stats or the Melbourne Cup with photos of winners or pause and then rewind if you missed the end of the race - these are all possible with the new capabilities of digital radio,’ said Ms Warner. “DAB+ services in Melbourne have been greatly anticipated with many of the digital radio manufacturers such as Pure, Sangean, Teac, Roberts and Yamaha based in Melbourne. The digital radio switch on in Perth went very smoothly and traffic to our www.digitalradioplus.com.au website has been very high with listeners seeking more information about digital radio.” “The switch on of digital radio is a culmination of seven years work with the Federal Government, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), commercial broadcasters, the ABC and SBS, together with retailers and manufacturers of digital radios to ensure a comprehensive and coordinated switch on of a compelling new way of listening to radio,” said Ms Warner.

KENNEDY AWARDS Excellence in Australian Journalism 10th Anniversary Sponsorship Prospectus DIMITY CLANCEY AND LAURA MANGHAM OF A CURRENT AFFAIR WIN THE 2020 MIKE WILLESEE AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING NIGHTLY CURRENT AFFAIRS THE HISTORY OF THE KENNEDY AWARDS NAMED after the trailblazing indigenous journalist Les Kennedy, the Kennedy Awards were initially conceived in 2011 to recognise excellence in New South Wales journalism. Almost immediately the Kennedys were shaped by the nature of the entrants - attracting journalists from the likes of Four Corners, 60 Minutes, The Australian, A Current Affair, 730 Report, SBS and the Financial Review to become a truly independent, national celebration of Australian journalism. The awards were created by journalists for journalists - open to all-comers with no agendas or historical obligation to affiliation. A decade later the Kennedys have become the Australian media's night of nights - celebrated for their inclusiveness, independence, respect for the past and the value of fostering the next generation of the nation's finest journalists. Les Kennedy THE INSPIRATION OF THE KENNEDY AWARDS Les Kennedy was never in the officers' mess of journalism - and nor did he want to be. He loved nothing better than excelling on the road as a leader of other "shoe leather" journalists. Proud of his indigenous heritage, Les' awareness of his past and the pride he took in it were the twin chambers of a big, generous heart. It was his fabled generosity that fuelled a selfless devotion to a long list of protégés.

  • Intention and Diverging Interpretings of Implicature in the ''Uncovered Meat'
Intention and diverging interpretings of implicature in the ‘‘uncovered meat’’ sermon MICHAEL HAUGH Abstract The standard model of communication in linguistic pragmatics is founded on the assumption that ‘‘successful’’ communication involves the addressee making inferences about the intentions of the speaker. Miscommunication of implicatures thus presumably arises when the addressee does not cor- rectly infer the speaker’s intention. In this paper, however, it is argued that this view of the (mis)communication of implicatures does not adequately account for the manner in which intentions may become the subject of dis- cursive dispute in interaction thereby giving rise to diverging interpretings of implicatures. Drawing from an analysis of the ‘‘uncovered meat’’ com- ments made by Sheik Taj Din al-Hilali and the ensuing controversy over what was implied by them, it is argued that to label such an incident as sim- ply a misunderstanding of the speaker’s intentions is misleading. Instead, it is suggested that the way in which Hilali’s comments were shifted from a specific audience in the Muslim community to wider Australian society by the media engendered discursive dispute over Hilali’s intentions, and thus gave rise to the co-constitution of diverging interpretings of what was im- plied by Hilali. Building a model of the communication of implicatures must therefore move beyond the received view that it involves ‘‘correctly’’ inferring the intentions of speakers to encompass a broader view where both converging and diverging interpretings of implicatures emerge through their conjoint co-constitution in interaction. 1. Introduction One of the key assumptions underlying the field of pragmatics is that what is communicated, in particular, meaning beyond what is said, cru- cially involves the intentions of speakers.
