2013-2014 ANNUAL REPORT

One by One. Every student counts. Every student graduates. our message to you letter from the President/CEO and Board Chair

There’s a widening opportunity gap for children who are not getting the education they need and deserve. More than 90% of the students at Denver Kids are living near or below the poverty line. Without our support, one in two of these students will likely drop-out of school.

One by one, we are losing our children and this is a crisis.

At Denver Kids, we believe that the dropout crisis is solvable in Denver in our lifetime. We believe that every child deserves the chance to pursue their future aspirations.

We’re creating a new narrative for our children. A narrative for the future that says all children - no matter their background, skin color, or zip code - can be successful.

Leo and Jaydon are creating a new narrative for their future.

Jaydon graduated on time last year as measured by the No Child Left Behind federal standard. When Jaydon joined Denver Kids in the sixth grade, he was facing big challenges; challenges no eleven-year-old should have to face: a special education diagnosis, a disabled mother, and an incarcerated father. Jaydon’s Denver Kids Educational Counselor and volunteer mentor stood beside him. They found resources outside the school-day, a new school that better addressed his needs, and most importantly, a connection to the future. Jaydon went to Europe with his mentor, which incited a new interest in languages. With a team by his side, Jaydon crossed the finish line and is now attending Northwestern Junior College.

It took Leo five years to graduate high school. He joined Denver Kids in the fifth grade and like Jaydon, faced tremendous barriers. He struggled with self-confidence and motivation which showed up in his poor attendance and grades. His Denver Kids Educational Counselor and mentor stood by him, pushed him, and connected him with resources even when he wanted to quit. Leo took an extra year to finish high school; not “on-time” as measured by the federal standard. But in our book, Leo is a “Super Senior.” His path was different then Jaydon’s, but just as much a success. Had his Educational Counselor and mentor not convinced him to keep going for that extra year, Leo would have dropped out. He is now attending the Lincoln College of Technology.

While Jaydon and Leo had different graduation/completion dates, they are both champions. Official graduation rates hold us accountable, but they do not tell the whole story. This last year, we graduated almost 70% of our seniors on-time as measured by that federal standard. Here’s the deeper story: 84% of our seniors graduated or are continuing on with us for that important fifth year.We are equally proud of all our graduates.

Our 2020 Vision challenges us to increase our on-time graduation rate to 90% and double the number of students we serve by 2021 – making the invaluable support of Denver Kids available to more students like Jaydon and Leo. To do this, we must increase our annual budget by $4 million. That is a lot of money, but it’s nothing compared to what it will cost us if we don’t solve this crisis. Each student we fail to graduate will cost us nearly $300,000 in increased social services throughout their lifetime.

Denver Kids is taking a stand and we ask that you stand with us. We can end the dropout crisis, but we can’t do it without you. We ask that you join our movement today by investing in our 2020 Vision or giving your time.

We will tackle it one student at a time. One mentor at a time. One dollar at a time. One graduate at a time.

At the very core of who we are and what we do, are the nearly thirty Educational Counselors that work as servant-leaders to over 1,400 students in Denver Public Schools. Educational Counselors like Jason serve as resource navigators who address the whole child, whole family, and whole community. Jason works beyond the classroom to advocate for his students before and after school and within the home. He builds long-term relationships with his students and sees them through some of their most transformative years. Through these relationships and personal credibility, Jason works with his students to remove barriers impeding their success.

Denver Kids Educational Counselors specialize in serving elementary, middle, and high school students and closely monitor achievement indicators like behavior, attendance, and academics. The mission is to get our students on track and keep them there. Educational Counselors partner with the school, parent, and community to collectively wrap their arms around the child as to say, “We will not let you fail.” He builds long- term relationships with his students and sees them through some of their most transformative years. 350 32% 62%

Over two-hundred men and women volunteer countless hours and invaluable perspectives to mentor the students of Denver Kids. If Educational Counselors are the heart of our program, our mentors are surely the gem. Mentors come to Denver Kids looking to make a difference in the lives of others. They are friends that lend an ear and champions that offer a boost. They share experiences and broaden horizons.

Always a lover of the outdoors, Jamie sought out to share his passion with another. Over the past two years, Jamie and Druce have developed a rich friendship during their time on the trails. “We talk about things going on in each other’s lives. We value the time we have with one another. I get that I am a role model for Druce, but I hope that he gets that he is a role model for me, too.” Jamie works hand-in-hand with Druce’s Educational Counselor to open doors and foster dreams. “I get that I am a role model for Druce, but I hope that he gets that he is a role model for me, too.”

Learning doesn’t stop after the final school bell. What we do with our time after school and during the summer has considerable impact on the character of our students. For the students of Denver Kids, access to camps, activities, and incentives are limited. As part of our holistic, wrap-around approach, we work to provide our students access to enriching opportunities outside of the classroom. We refer to this as Student Engagement.

John was struggling with school. His attendance waned and his grades began to sink. John just couldn’t get focused. His Educational Counselor decided to use John’s love of skateboarding as a motivator. “If you get to school on time for the rest of the semester and get your grades above a 2.5 GPA, I will nominate you for the Denver Kids Ski & Snowboarding Program.” John always wanted to learn how to snowboard, but his mom hasn’t had the time nor the resources to take him. This was the chance he was waiting for and nothing was going to get in his way. “To me, Denver Kids is about school, goals, and having fun. We always get to do cool things.”

8 to have future options

A high school diploma is not enough. Unless our graduates are college and career ready, we’ve missed our mark. It starts with a crucial, future-focused conversation. It happens as soon as a student joins Denver Kids. “What do you want to be? What are your dreams? How do we get you there?” Our Educational Counselors set an expectation that their students will have a plan after graduation. By setting the bar high, nearly all Denver Kids graduates apply to college their senior year. Four out of five are the first in their families to go.

Aaron was really good at math. His ability to explain difficult concepts to his peers was a great sense of pride for Aaron. Darla, Aaron’s Educational Counselor, took him on college visits, helped him secure financial aid, and buckled down on his study habits. “Over the years, I was able to show Aaron that if he did the work, college was possible.” Aaron is now a freshman at Metropolitan State University of Denver studying mathematics. “My professor asked me what I wanted to do with my degree. I told him I wanted his job.” “Over the years, I was able to show him that college was possible.” 1.1 85% 76% MILLION

Support of the whole child starts in the home. Our Educational Counselors work with their students’ parents to create a supportive learning environment for their child. “I can’t be truly effective in serving my students unless I get buy-in at home. It takes a team approach to create a stable environment.” One in two of our graduates are the first in their family to earn a high school diploma. For many parents, the school system is intimidating and misunderstood.

“My child’s Educational Counselor taught me how to advocate for my daughter. She helped me create a system for managing homework and keeping on top of her grades. She has inspired me to advocate for myself too. I enrolled in Denver Community College last fall. Now we do our homework together.” “I get buy-in at home. It takes a team approach to create a stable environment.”

With a sixty-eight year history of serving students and families, Denver Kids has so many alumni making their mark on the world. Some of them make their way back to Denver Kids intent on giving themselves to the same program that gave to them.

Anita is a 1999 graduate of West High School and Denver Kids. Fourteen years later, she remains close with her former Educational Counselor, Tawney, and mentor, Ana, who has mentored a total of six girls since 1983. Anita found her way back to the organization through the Young Professionals Council and now serves as a testimony to the program’s efficacy.

Anita comes clean when she says she was not an easy teenager. Hindered by a bad attitude and defense tactics, Anita put up a wall that she was sure was impenetrable. “I was facing expulsion. From my teachers to the principal; no one wanted me in school - including myself. I was getting in people’s faces and starting fights. Through Denver Kids, I finally found someone who was ready to take me on. Tawney and Ana came alongside me at time when I needed them the most. They knew something I didn’t – that I had potential and that I was too much of a fighter to let that escape me.”

Once nearly expelled from Denver Public Schools, Anita now works inside the school district as the Community Liaison for Excel Academy. She works to support the whole student and family and often refers many of her own students back to Denver Kids.

“Denver Kids teaches you how to advocate for yourself well after you graduate. This is a skill that I have learned and am now passing on to other students who face the same challenges that I once did.” While Anita is doing great things, she is sure to point out that Denver Kids was absolutely critical to her success. “There’s no way I would be where I am today without those who came alongside me. Denver Kids really made a difference.” Anita fully embodies the Denver Kids mission by serving as a successful, contributing member of the community. We stand in awe of her accomplishments and all that lies ahead of her. “There’s no way I would be where I am today without those who came alongside me.”

Donna Hultin Excellence Award Evelyn Orozco Evelyn has the courage to excel. Spend just two minutes with her and she will inspire a confidence in you that anything is possible. Evelyn joined Denver Kids in her seventh grade. Despite tough challenges at home, her bright smile and optimism wipe away any hint of adversity. Evelyn’s teachers laud her for high marks and her concern for others. With a 3.7 grade point average, Evelyn has been a Rotary Scholar for two years and became the first in her family to graduate from high school. Evelyn is now a freshman at the University of Denver with her sights focused on a doctorate in Behavioral Science. She will be the first to tell you that through hard work and an enduring belief in yourself, indeed, anything is possible.

Denver Active 20-30 Male Student of the Year Jordan Whitaker Jordan is a man of integrity. Many times, life presented him with the easy way out, but each time, he resisted. When his classmates were battling off senioritis, Jordan was battling homelessness. Giving up was tempting at times, but he remained committed to fulfilling a promise to his mother that he would graduate from high school and do something great with his life. His desire to succeed was fueled by his innate drive to challenge himself. Jordan is a double-varsity letterman in basketball and track and field. He pursued honors classes which earned him a spot as a Denver Rotary Scholar. Jordan joined the Burt Foundation Board and even emceed the annual Denver Kids Empowering our Tomorrow Breakfast, speaking to a packed room of 800 adults. Faint of heart, he is not. Jordan fulfilled on his promise to his mother and is now attending Northeastern Junior College where he is poised to do great things.

Denver Active 20-30 Female Student of the Year Marche Miles Marche trusts that happiness is a conscious choice and not an emotion rooted in personal possessions. She challenged herself with a rigorous academic workload, a spot on the varsity basketball team, and demanding extracurricular activities. Marche blossomed over the past years through her participation in Big City Mountaineers, Manual High School’s Student Leadership Team, the Denver Public Schools’ Student Board of Education, and as a Denver Student Ambassador to Kenya. Marche routinely places herself in new and often uncomfortable situations as a way to challenge herself and broaden her horizons. Her Educational Counselor, Darla, describes Marche as a natural role model and leader. With everything on her plate, there were times she wanted to quit, but Marche always pushed through her demanding schedule and even managed near perfect attendance throughout her senior year. Marche is now studying business at Adams State University.

Educator of the Year Male Mentor of the Year Brenda Kazin Jeff Simpson Jeff started hanging out with Matt just over a year ago. Matt was struggling with the unexpected and sudden passing of his former Denver Kids mentor. From the very start, Jeff lent an ear to Matt and talked about whatever was on his mind. Jeff strives to incorporate important life lessons into all of their activities and fosters the belief that anything is possible when you put your mind to it. More than anything, Jeff was a strong friend when Matt needed one the most. Matt is now a senior and on his way to high school graduation with Jeff right by his side. “Jeff really motivates me. He helps me think about life after high school and what I need to do to prepare myself. He brings so much to my life.”

In 2008, Principal Brenda Kazin was tasked with opening an elementary and middle school that would serve the Denver refugee population. Brenda embraced the challenge and was instrumental in creating the vision and plan for Place Bridge Academy. Brenda immediately recognized the tremendous challenges the students and their families faced and worked with intense focus to address them. Brenda collaborated with community partners like Denver Kids to create a safe and supportive learning environment. She routinely refers students to Denver Kids and has even helped our Educational Counselors find office space within her school. “I feel good knowing my students will go onto high school with their Educational Counselor right there to support them. It is a wish I have for nearly all of my students.”

Female Mentor of the Year Julie Curtis-Seltz Julie is a mentor to Claudia, an eleventh grader who has been in Denver Kids for nearly eight years. The two were matched five years ago when Claudia was an extremely shy sixth grader. Understanding the value of a boost of confidence and a well-timed high-five, Julie set out to help Claudia break out of her shell. With Julie’s encouragement, Claudia applied for academic programs, took school trips, ran for Student Council, and raised money to help fund her activities. Julie supported her every step of the way by being at her events and practicing public speaking together. In the words of Claudia, “Julie is one of the greatest people I know. She has done a lot for me and my family. She has shown me the great qualities every person should have. I am forever indebted to her.”
