THE IUCN RED LIST OF THREATENED SPECIES™

Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family

Plantae Tracheophyta Magnoliopsida Cactaceae

Taxon Name: Mammillaria mystax Mart.

Taxonomic Source(s): Hunt, D., Taylor, N. and Charles, G. (compilers and editors). 2006. The New Lexicon. dh Books, Milborne Port, UK. Assessment Information

Red List Category & Criteria: Least Concern ver 3.1

Year Published: 2013

Date Assessed: April 29, 2009

Justification: Mammillaria mystax has a relatively wide range and is locally abundant. Although there are threats in places, these are not sufficient to warrant any concern. Hence, it is listed as Least Concern. Geographic Range

Range Description: This species is endemic to Mexico. Arias et al. (1997) report the species from the states of Guerrero, Oaxaca and Puebla at elevations of 1,000 to 2,600 m asl.

Country Occurrence: Native: Mexico (Guerrero, Oaxaca, Puebla)

Habitat and Ecology (see Appendix for additional information) The species occurs in tropical dry deciduous forest (Vovides et al. 1997), Quercus forest and xerophyllous scrub (Arias et al. 1997). It flowers from February to April (Arias et al. 1997).

Systems: Terrestrial

Use and Trade (see Appendix for additional information) This cactus is used locally as an ornamental .

Threats (see Appendix for additional information) There are no major threats. However, it is affected indirectly from land use change for farming and cattle ranching.

Conservation Actions (see Appendix for additional information) The species occurs within the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Biosphere Reserve (Méndez-Larios et al. 2006). This species would benefit from basic studies of ecology and population monitoring. Credits
