McNelis, Ph.D. ABSTRACT After achieving an extraordinarily successful career as an elegiac poet in the midst of the power, glory and creativity of ancient Rome during the start of the Augustan era, Ovid was abruptly separated from the stimulating community in which he thrived, and banished to the outer edge of the Roman Empire. While living the last nine or ten years of his life in Tomis, on the eastern shore of the Black Sea, Ovid steadily continued to compose poetry, producing two books of poems and epistles, Tristia and Epistulae ex Ponto, and a 644-line curse poem, Ibis, all written in elegiac couplets. By necessity, Ovid’s writing from relegatio (relegation) served multiple roles beyond that of artistic creation and presentation. Although he continued to write elegiac poems as he had during his life in Rome, Ovid expanded the structure of those poems to portray his life as a relegatus and his estrangement from his beloved homeland, thereby redefining the elegiac genre. Additionally, and still within the elegiac structure, Ovid changed the content of his poetry in order to defend himself to Augustus and request assistance from friends in securing a reduced penalty or relocation closer to Rome. -

The Politics of Roman Memory in the Age of Justinian DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Marion Woodrow Kruse, III Graduate Program in Greek and Latin The Ohio State University 2015 Dissertation Committee: Anthony Kaldellis, Advisor; Benjamin Acosta-Hughes; Nathan Rosenstein Copyright by Marion Woodrow Kruse, III 2015 ABSTRACT This dissertation explores the use of Roman historical memory from the late fifth century through the middle of the sixth century AD. The collapse of Roman government in the western Roman empire in the late fifth century inspired a crisis of identity and political messaging in the eastern Roman empire of the same period. I argue that the Romans of the eastern empire, in particular those who lived in Constantinople and worked in or around the imperial administration, responded to the challenge posed by the loss of Rome by rewriting the history of the Roman empire. The new historical narratives that arose during this period were initially concerned with Roman identity and fixated on urban space (in particular the cities of Rome and Constantinople) and Roman mythistory. By the sixth century, however, the debate over Roman history had begun to infuse all levels of Roman political discourse and became a major component of the emperor Justinian’s imperial messaging and propaganda, especially in his Novels. The imperial history proposed by the Novels was aggressivley challenged by other writers of the period, creating a clear historical and political conflict over the role and import of Roman history as a model or justification for Roman politics in the sixth century. -

Ryan Mathison Coin 17 The reign of Caesar Augustus is often the point at which historians consider that the Roman Empire began, and the Roman Republic ended. The reign of Augustus, from 27BCE-14CE allowed for some of the greatest cultural developments in the western world, and helped bring an already powerful nation to another level of dominance in the world. As such, he is remembered to this day as a giant in the history of the west. This coin from the St. Olaf Collection demonstrates how he was portrayed to the Romans soon after his death, during the reign of the Emperor Tiberius, from 14-37 CE. This coin features, on the obverse, the head of Augustus, facing left, with the words “Divus Augustus Pater.” Divus Augustus was a title that was granted to him after his death, meaning divine Augustus. Pater, in Latin, means father, and is part of a title which was granted to Augustus. This title, Pater Patriae, meaning father of the fatherland, was a major title that was granted to people who did a great service to Rome. On this same side, there is also a star and a thunderbolt. The star, placed between the first “U” and “S” in Augustus, is a reference to one of the stars in the constellation Aquila. It was probably present between 4 and 2 BCE, during the reign of Augustus, and was put on the coins as a reference to his greatness, as such a celestial event must give legitimacy and divine providence to a leader.1 The Thunderbolt is a reference to Jupiter, king of the gods, and one of the patrons of Rome. -
Female Suffering, Silence, and Men's Power in Ovid's Fasti
Female Suffering, Silence, and Man’s Power in Ovid’s Fasti Ovid’s treatment of women in his poetry, particularly sexual violence against women, is a divisive subject among scholars. Richlin (1992) has examined how feminist scholars might approach these portrayals, addressing the question of whether he should even be in the canon. The impact of Ovid’s upsetting understanding of consent even plays a role in modern culture, as Donna Zuckerberg investigates in her 2018 book Not All Dead White Men. These conversations often center around how Ovid portrays the female suffering: does he delight in it or offer a sympathetic portrayal of rape and its consequences? This paper explores Ovid’s foregrounding of three aspects of stories of rape in the Fasti: female suffering, female silence, and the effect that each of these have on men’s power. Carol Newlands identifies three tensions present in Ovid’s calendrical work: male versus female, arma versus pax, and Roman versus Greek (1995: 212). As an elegist and as a Roman who was ultimately exiled for not aligning with Augustan morals, Ovid aligns himself primarily with the feminine, with elegy, and with Greek. Richard King argues that Ovid uses the Fasti to examine “his own identity in relation to a Roman national identity figured by the calendar” (2006: 5). The existing debate often delineates two potential positions for Ovid: a radical feminist for his time, supporting survivors and telling their stories, or a creep delighting in the gory details of violence against women. Given Ovid’s exploration of his identity within the Roman system and his alignment with the feminine, his foregrounding of female suffering and silence in the interest of male power offers a different approach to his portrayal of rape. -

Ni{ i Vizantija XIV 629 Graham Jones SEEDS OF SANCTITY: CONSTANTINE’S CITY AND CIVIC HONOURING OF HIS MOTHER HELENA Of cities and citizens in the Byzantine world, Constantinople and its people stand preeminent. A recent remark that the latter ‘strove in everything to be worthy of the Mother of God, to Whom the city was dedicated by St Constantine the Great in 330’ follows a deeply embedded pious narrative in which state and church intertwine in the city’s foundation as well as its subse- quent fortunes. Sadly, it perpetuates a flawed reading of the emperor’s place in the political and religious landscape. For a more nuanced and considered view we have only to turn to Vasiliki Limberis’ masterly account of politico-religious civic transformation from the reign of Constantine to that of Justinian. In the concluding passage of Divine Heiress: The Virgin Mary and the Creation of Christianity, Limberis reaffirms that ‘Constantinople had no strong sectarian Christian tradition. Christianity was new to the city, and it was introduced at the behest of the emperor.’ Not only did the civic ceremonies of the imperial cult remain ‘an integral part of life in the city, breaking up the monotony of everyday existence’. Hecate, Athena, Demeter and Persephone, and Isis had also enjoyed strong presences in the city, some of their duties and functions merging into those of two protector deities, Tyche Constantinopolis, tutelary guardian of the city and its fortune, and Rhea, Mother of the Gods. These two continued to be ‘deeply ingrained in the religious cultural fabric of Byzantium.. -

CHAPTER SIX THE FAST!: STYLE, STRUCTURE, AND TIME John F. Miller 1. Introductory Long neglected, Ovid's elegiac calendar-poem, the Fasti, has been voluminously recognized by recent scholarship as a literary master work.' The poet himself calls it "greater" (2.3, 4.3) than his earlier poetry, no doubt in reference to its grand scale as well as the august central topics-Rome's religious feasts, national legends, and the Emperor. The plan called for twelve books but we have only six January through June-totaling 4,972 verses (this outstrips the 4, 7 55 lines of Aeneid 1-6). Speaking to Augustus from his exile at Tomis, Ovid claims that he has written twelve books of Fasti (Tr. 2.549, scripsi), but most now agree that he is overstating the achievement for apologetic purposes. Although the calendrical narrator on three occasions explicitly anticipates sacra of the year's second half (3.5 7-58 and 199-200; 5.145-48), no trace of the last six books survives. Strong intratextuallinks between Books 1 and 6 (among other things) suggest to some that Ovid finally designed the calendrical fragment which we possess as an integrated work. 2 Even the poem's incom pleteness has been interpreted as part of its meaning, as Ovid's refusal to surrender his identity to the Emperor and the state3-just ahead lay the months of Julius and Augustus. However, Book 6 ends with straightforward praises of the imperial family (6.80 1-1 0), and the closely knit structures of the first six months hardly rule out a bal ancing final half. -

These investigations have, however, largely privileged the importance of these activities to the upper levels of society. Attempts to examine the responses of the lower classes to death, and its consequent demands for disposal and commemoration, have focused on the activities of freedmen and slaves anxious to establish or maintain their social position. The free poor, living on the edge of subsistence, are often disregarded and believed to have been unceremoniously discarded within anonymous mass graves (puticuli) such as those discovered at Rome by Lanciani in the late nineteenth century. This thesis re-examines the archaeological and historical evidence for the funerary practices of the urban poor in Italy within their appropriate social, legal and religious context. The thesis attempts to demonstrate that the desire for commemoration and the need to provide legitimate burial were strong at all social levels and linked to several factors common to all social strata. -

Women in Livy and Tacitus By Stephen Prevoznik Prevoznik 1 Introduction Livy and Tacitus are both influential and important Roman authors. They have written two of the most influential histories of Rome. Livy covers from the founding of Rome until the Reign of Augustus. Tacitus focuses on the early empire, writing from the end of Augustus’ reign through Nero. This sets up a nice symmetry, as Tacitus picks up where Livy stops. Much has been written about the men they include, but the women also play an important role. This essay plans to outline how the women in each work are used by the authors to attain their goals. In doing so, each author’s aim is exposed. Livy: Women as Exempla Livy’s most famous work, Ab Urbe Condita, is meant to be read as a guide. -

He guided me through the disciplines of history and classics with which I was mostly unfamiliar and showed me just how much fascinating scholarship there is. I hope I have done him justice as my advisor. Second, I must thank my boyfriend, James, who has put up with me for the past year. Not only did he spend one whole day proofreading and trying to understand what I was talking about, but he spent many days listening to my whining and frustration. I let myself be distracted by him a fair few times to play a game of poker or watch a movie when I should have been working, but he was the one who made me sit down and write all the other times. His love and support led me in large part to believe I was capable of such a thing at all. The rest of my family was also greatly responsible for encouraging me and listened to more than its fair share of whining as well. They have pushed me all my life to engage in this world of academia, and while my thesis contains many fewer equations and lab results than they might have liked, it would never have come into existence if they had not known that this was the world I would so enjoy. -

Fifty-Two SEPARATED SPOUSES AND EQUAL PARTNERS: CICERO, OVID, AND MARRIAGE AT A DISTANCE William O. Stephens In “The Transformation of the Husband/Wife Relationship during Exile: Let- ters from Cicero and Ovid” (2001), Sabine Grebe argues that Cicero and Ov- id’s letters from exile reveal a transformation of the marital relationship and its gender roles. In traditional, patriarchal Roman society the wife was depen- dent upon and subordinate to the husband in many ways. The wife’s activities were restricted to the private, domestic realm. The husband was engaged in public, legal, and political matters. The wife cooked, made and washed clothes, cared for the husband and the children, or supervised slaves in these tasks, and nursed ill slaves. The husband handled the finances. The wife de- pended on her husband for emotional support and comfort. The husband bore this burden as the stronger partner. These traditional arrangements were reversed, Grebe observes, when the orator Cicero and the poet Ovid were banished. Grebe notes that both hus- bands could have chosen to take their wives with them into exile, but both decided their interests would be better served by having their wives remain in Rome. By doing so Cicero’s wife Terentia and Ovid’s wife (whose name we do not know) could protect their family’s estates, manage finances, and more effectively advocate for their husbands’ return. It is uncertain whether these arrangements were supposed to be practical advantages for the wives, the husbands, or both. Grebe remarks that Terentia “suffered physically and psy- chologically from Cicero’s exile, and worries made Ovid’s wife slim” (this volume, p. -

The focus of historians on Constantine I, the first Roman Emperor to allegedly convert to Christianity, has often come at the cost of ignoring Constantine's predecessor, Diocletian, sometimes known as the "Second Father of the Roman Empire". The success of Constantine's empire has often been attributed to the work and reforms of Diocletian, but there have been very few studies of the man beyond simple biography.
