PAUSE FOR THOUGHT

Somerhill Cross Country Yesterday 11 of our talented cross country runners travelled to Somerhill School in Tonbridge for their first race of the season. Known for its tough and gruelling course, Somerhill is always a huge challenge with the undulating hills and long ascents leading to even bigger hills.

In the first race of the afternoon, the U9 girls, Sophia B and Isobel J stepped onto the startline looking calm and confident. As the race got off to a blistering start the girls made sure they were in the mix and both had terrific sprint finishes. Next to race were the U11 girls. They had to run a longer distance than in previous years but, undeterred by this challenge, all 6 girls ran fantastical- ly well. Millie D lead the girls home in a magnificent 24th place followed by Anna M, Emmy M-S, Zara P, Angel N and Isabella L. Well done especially to Isabella who stepped in at the last mi- nute, well done. We had 3 boys representing the school in the U11 age group. Once again the start was a massive sprint (I don’t even think Usain Bolt could have kept up with the boys). The team was lead home by Oliver B followed by Reuben D and Svamin S who was running his first ever cross country race for Spring Grove. Well done boys, well done everybody. The final results will be published as soon as I receive them.

Finally: a big thank you to the parents for their support and en- couraging the children to ‘Always Do Their Best’. Dee Langford

U11 Football Tournament at Ashford School Read By - Cameron C

On Wednesday the U11a’s, and a photographer, went to Ashford Prep School to take part in their tournament. It’s a big competition with teams from all over entering. In our group were St Faith’s, Junior King’s, and Gad’s Hill. Our defence was exceptionally tight and we conceded no goals in the group stage. Unfortunately, we scored none ether! We went into the plate competition from there. We played Wellesley in the quarters, and our form continued 0-0. We went through on penalties. Semi-final...you guessed it… more similar form and another 0-0. We got through on penalties. So we made the plate final without scoring or conceding a goal. Talk about a West Ger- man performance!! In the final we were outgunned by Tenterden. They couldn’t score but nor could we. Extra time, they couldn’t score, nor could we, until finally someone broke the deadlock and a goal was scored in open play… with five seconds to go it was them! We lost the final 1-0! Brilliant performances by all of the boys. A special mention to William D in particular, but Man of the tournament of was Rafa. Thank you to Mr Smith for taking us.

U11 Hockey Tournament at Sutton Valence Match Reporter - Tabitha R

On Wednesday, the U11 girls went to play in a hockey tournament at . When we got to the school we went into play Rose Hill and with an amazing goal from Alice we won 1-0. Then we went on to play Holmewood House but sadly we lost 1-0. After a rather long break we were ready to play St Michaels’ but once again we lost 1-0. As you can tell, after these two losses, we were furious so when we went on to the next match against Pembury, we were fighting for a win. We started the match and Emmy scored a great foal (hooray!). We went on to our next match against Sutton Valence and we knew these were a tough school but we still tried our hardest and guess what? Well we lost 0-2 but it was still worth a shot! As we went to our last match we played against Ardingly. Alice scored and we won 1-0. Player of the tournament was Alice. We finished the afternoon with 3 wins, 3 loses and 3rd overall in our group. Thank you to Mrs Langford and Mrs Makin for taking us. Well done SG.

U9 Football Tournament at Ashford School Match Reporter - Freddie L

Yesterday, the U9A’s went to Ashford School to take part in their tournament. It’s the biggest tournament of the year with 16 teams en- tering. There are 4 groups of 4 teams that play in a league system to determine who goes into a cup or plate competition. In our mini league were Claremont, St Faith’s and King’s Rochester. We played some very good football at this stage and won our matches, 1-0, 2-0 and 1-0 again. This put us through to the cup at the top of our group. We played Sutton Valence A’s in the Quarter Final. It was a really close match with action at both ends. It ended 0-9 but we went through on penalties. The semi-final was against Marlborough House. We seemed to have the better of them in the opening exchanges but we couldn’t get the goal we deserved. They built into the match and scored a goal against the run of play. We tried hard, but they got another goal and then finally a very lucky longshot went in as well. The final score was 3-0 to them but we had done very well. There was no man of the match as we all did so well and Mr Smith was proud of all of us. Thanks to the mums, dads, grannies and granddads for their support.

U9 Hockey v Match Reporters - Sara S and Flossie A

We played on one of the hottest October days on record for several years. We got off to a smashing start. We were all strong and deter- mined to win but Kent College were strong too. At about half-way into the match, Lily-Mai unexpectedly ran into the goalie and had to go off. We didn’t get the goal so we went on to the next and managed to score a goal.

The final scores were SG ’C’ v KC ’D’ lost 0-1 and SG ‘C’ v KC ‘E’ won 1-0.

Player of the Match was Eleanor J. Thank you to Mr Restell for taking and to the parents for supporting us.

Channel Challenge - Amanda Marsh (Mum to Olivia in Prep 4)

I have taken on a swim challenge which requires me to swim the equivalent of the 22 mile channel swim. I have so far completed 8 of the 22 miles, however I have yet to start seeking sponsorship monies. I am doing the challenge for 'Aspire', a charity who help change the lives of people who have been paralysed by Spinal Cord Injury.

Please see the link below to support her. Mrs Read also has a sponsorship form. Thank you. https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/amanda-marsh-2018-channel-swim-27981 PTA NEWS
