Thomas Rimer Dissertation Director ii Copyright © by Mayu Tsuruya 2005 iii Sensô Sakusen Kirokuga (War Campaign Documentary Painting): Japan’s National Imagery of the “Holy War,” 1937-45 Mayu Tsuruya University of Pittsburgh, 2005 This dissertation is the first monographic study in any language of Japan’s official war painting produced during the second Sino-Japanese War in 1937 through the Pacific War in 1945. This genre is known as sensô sakusen kirokuga (war campaign documentary painting). Japan’s army and navy commissioned noted Japanese painters to record war campaigns on a monumental scale. Military officials favored yôga (Western-style painting) for its strength in depicting scenes in realistic detail over nihonga (Japanese-style painting). The military gave unprecedented commissions to yôga painters despite the fact that Japan was fighting the “materialist” West. Large military exhibitions exposed these paintings to civilians. Officials attached national importance to war documentary paintings by publicizing that the emperor had inspected them in the Imperial Palace. This study attempts to analyze postwar Japanese reluctance to tackle war documentary painting by examining its controversial and unsettling nature. -

Dubravka Vidaković Erdeljić Osijek, 2015. 1 Summary JAPANESE-ENGLISH LANGUAGE CONTACT The paper examines the language contact between Japanese and English. The first section of the paper defines language contact and the most common contact-induced language phenomena with an emphasis on linguistic borrowing as the dominant contact-induced phenomenon. The classification of linguistic borrowing thereby follows Haugen's distinction between morphemic importation and substitution. The second section of the paper presents the features of the Japanese language in terms of origin, phonology, syntax, morphology, and writing. The third section looks at the history of language contact of the Japanese with the Europeans, starting with the Portuguese and Spaniards, followed by the Dutch, and finally the English. The same section examines three different borrowing routes from English, and contact-induced language phenomena other than linguistic borrowing – bilingualism , code alternation, code-switching, negotiation, and language shift – present in Japanese-English language contact to varying degrees. This section also includes a survey of the motivation and reasons for borrowing from English, as well as the attitudes of native Japanese speakers to these borrowings. The fourth and the central section of the paper looks at the phenomenon of linguistic borrowing, its scope and the various adaptations that occur upon morphemic importation on the phonological, morphological, orthographic, semantic and syntactic levels. -

“TWO SIDES OF THE SAME COIN”: YOKOHAMA PIDGIN JAPANESE AND JAPANESE PIDGIN ENGLISH* Andrei A. AVRAM University of Bucharest, Romania [email protected] Abstract The paper is a comparative overview of the phonology, morphology, syntax and lexicon of Yokohama Pidgin Japanese and Japanese Pidgin English, formerly spoken in Japan. Both varieties are shown to exhibit features typical of pre-pidgins, while they differ considerably in the circumstances of their emergence and the context of use. Long – When Islands Create Languages WHEN ISLANDS CREATE LANGUAGES or, Why do language research with Bonin (Ogasawara) Islanders? DANIEL LONG Abstract This paper examines the role that the geographical and social factors of isolation (from the outside world) and intense contact (within the community) commonly associated with small island communities can play in the development of new language systems. I focus on fieldwork studies of the creoloid and Mixed Language of the Bonin (Ogasawara) Islands. Keywords Japan, Ogasawara, Bonin, Chichijima, language contact, Mixed Language, creoloid Why some linguists are attracted to islands Island societies can teach us many things about human language itself. How do children, for example, assemble a complete language (a creole) out of the imperfect ‘broken’ speech (a pidgin) used by their parents and all the other adults around them?1 Such seemingly impossible things do occur and research on language use in island communities helps us to understand the processes by which such improbable feats are accomplished. Other questions arise too. Are such pidgins and creoles the only types of language systems that can come from language contact or do other types exist? What role do island factors like isolation from the outside world and intense inner-contact among islanders play in language change? In other words, there is the question of whether island languages are more likely or less likely to change as compared to their mainland counterparts. In order to explore these issue, this paper examines evidence from the language systems of the Bonin (Ogasawara) Islands, and relates the study of such island languages to the study of broader topics like the study of human language in general, and the study of island societies. -

Bachelor’s Thesis Lund University Spring Term 2015 Centre for Languages and Linguistics JAPK11 Japanese studies Lost in Gairaigo Caroline Tomaszewska Supervisors: Rika Hayashi Arthur Holmer ABSTRACT The Japanese language consists of a large number of loanwords, which derived from both China and the West. It is believed by many that influence by the English language began with the American occupation just after the Second World War. The loanwords from especially English increased vastly in number ever since. Today, the foreign loanwords from the West, gairaigo, makes up to approximately 10% in the Japanese language, and still increasing. Since new words are introduced into Japanese, especially for concepts that do not exist in the language and words for things coming from abroad, many native words have been replaced with the loanwords in several fields in the daily life of Japanese people. This thesis deals with the possibility of the difficulty for native speakers to find the native words and an assumption that there might be a gap between the genders, younger and older generations where the younger generations prefer using gairaigo words instead of their native counterparts. This is examined through a questionnaire answered by a total of 60 native speakers and through previous researches. Although long vocals with o and u usually have macrons in the Hepburn system, instead words like ありがとう will be written as arigatou (thank you) and 高校 as koukou (high school). -

Chapter 13 Japanese: The Dialectic Relationships Between ‘Westerness’ and ‘Japaneseness’ as Reflected in English Loan Words ROTEM KOWNER and MICHAL DALIOT-BUL A somewhat anecdotal yet revealing editorial in the Japanese daily Japan Times recently mentioned the linguistic sensitivity of Koizumi Jun’ichiro, then prime minister of Japan. Koizumi reportedly erupted in anger while listening to a presentation by his telecommunications minister, which was so full of English loan words that it became almost incomprehensible (Japan Times, editorial, 19 January 2003). A few months later the National Institute for Japanese Language (Kokuritsu Kokugo Kenkyuˆ jo), affiliated with the Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Ministry, established a Loanword Committee (Gairaigo Iinkai) designed to encourage the replacement of gaiaraigo [loan words] with native words (on this committee see http://www.kokken.go.jp/public/gairaigo/). Ironically perhaps, when Prime Minister Koizumi was asked how he hoped to implement such a reform he answered that he intended to utilise the masukomi [mass communication] Á a very common term in contemporary Japanese, yet another English loan word (19 August 2002; NPR morning edition). Such expressions of personal resentment towards English loan words, as well as some institutional attempts to purify the Japanese language, are intriguing. Hitherto, extensive use of loan words in the government- sponsored media and government publications in Japan suggested that even if postwar official policy on loan words was not targeted at promoting and actively encouraging their use, nothing was done to prevent it. English loan words, in fact, have become so prevalent in contemporary Japanese that an estimated one out of ten words used today in Japan are English loan words (cf. -

D'Angelo Introduction On January 15, 21016, Dr. Saya Ike, lecturer at Sugiyama Jogakuen University, delivered a paper to studentsi and faculty of the College of World Englishes, entitled "The Spread of English in Australiaand Japan: Sociolinguistic Context and Variety Development." Ike was raised in Osakaand did her masters and doctoral work at Melbourne University, so is quite familiar with English in both of these contexts. Lecture Content The main attendees were the department'ssecond year students, who have all taken the Introduction to World Englishes class in their first year, so have some basic understanding of the concepts in the field. Nevertheless, the lecture started with a quite fundamental re- view of world Englishes concepts.Based on Jenkins (2005, 2009) Ike outlined the three diasporas of English: the firstto North America, Australiaand New Zealand in which set- tlersii who transported the language became permanent residents, the second to Africaand Asia where English functions as a second language, and the thirddiaspora, to the rest of the world.
