Single mothers on welfare can apply for Pell Grants that totally pay for their education; financial aid can provide them with a computer; the KSU distance program would be perfect to help them OUT of the “trap”. The only thing more ridiculous than a bunch of academicians tossing out polysyllabic terms describing simple concepts is a bunch of business types using the latest business slang. Catch phrases are hot in the trenches of the business world. Reputations for being cutting edge are actualized by utilizing buzz words 24/7. For example: 404: Someone who’s clueless. From the World Wide Web error message “404 Not found”, meaning that the requested document could not be located. Example: “Don’t bother asking him. He’s 404, man.” blamestorming: Sitting around in a group discussing why a deadline was missed or a project failed, and who was responsible. This one will be particularly valuable to those of you who have projects going right now. Dilberted: To be exploited and oppressed by your boss. Derived from the experiences of Dilbert. For example, “I’ve been Dilberted again. The old man revised the specs for the fourth time this week.” meatloaf: Jokes, links, poetry etc. forwarded multiple, multiple times to everyone on a personal e-mail list. Like spam, only homemade. (Thanks to Lennie Leeling.) ohnosecond: That minuscule fraction of time it takes to realize that you’ve just made a big mistake. percussive maintenance: The fine art of whacking an electronic device to get it working again. salmon day: The experience of spending an entire day swimming upstream only to die in the end. We’ve had these before — and will again. So, what’s wrong with jargon? Nothing, as long as we use it to increase the value of communication. Most of the business buzzwords above are great shorthand for common experiences. Using DCE buzzwords makes us a team. Besides, it is a lot easier to say DL, instead of “Distance Learning” or “MIOP” (my-op) for “Master’s in Industrial/Organizational Psychology.” From the 10,000 ft. view, however, we sometimes forget that the language we use on a day-to-day basis inside DCE doesn’t mean the same thing to outsiders, or even our students, clients, or conference attendees. At the end of the day, the language we use should serve the same purpose as everything we do: help someone learn something today that they wouldn’t have been able to learn without us. ‘Til next month – Anne Stark www.dce.ksu.edu/intranet/pio/newsletter Births, Events, etc. Division Birthdays Friday, May 3, after work, the Information Systems office staff would like to invite all Division May 14 Barb Kravitz, Information Systems staff, student employees, and their guests and family to the annual Spring Graduation Party at May 17 Mary Marston, Continuing Learning the lake.
