BOONE HIGH SCHOOL Boone,

C0'Edit°r5 Editor Advisors DARRELL KRUSE JOYCE LARSON MR. STOCK KAY NAREY . MISS EALY Dedication

As our elementary and high school years draw to a close, we realize how important these years have been. Not only have they been beneficial in the sense that they have given us much for our future years, but they have also provided mem ories on which to reminisce. I We hope to record a few of these memories in the pages of this book, and we dedicate this book to those memories. Foreword

This year has been a year of additions for the students of Boone High School.

Not only have our educational opportunities and enjoyment been increased by the addition of a beautiful new building, but also we as indivi duals have gained many more important addi tions. With our previous knowledge, we h a v e gained newer and more accurate knowledge. Many of our old prejudices and attitudes have been cast aside and replaced by a better outlook on life. To our older friendships, we have added more and new friendships and acquaintances.

In these ways we believe the students of Boone High have advanced from the old to the new. W1,-,3:§,*-,x'«;-:2‘-M.-.«~,,‘.,,.,. .,;_'. ,w«»M.mm.~m»w««»wt ,\~®i‘wIx0lN‘>.¢mMww&&~¢q§r9«up

Environment From Ground .1. m-3:. . m M...‘ 1‘/« ,~,, ‘_‘Something Added” One of the pleasures of this last year has been our new addition. The facilities of this building have been enjoyed by every one of us who has had the privilege of using them. The building has been especially appre ciated by the members of the music department who benefited from such additional facilities as sound-proof practice rooms and assembly rooms, individual instructor’s offices, and fine lighting. The shop classes have also enjoyed the opportunities afforded them by the new addition. Most of all, the entire student body has really taken full advantage of the won derful noon meals which have been served in the new cafeteria. As a whole, we have all greatly benefited from “something new.” Administration

Besides performing their marching duties very admirably this year, the band also made two major concert appearances. The band performed in the school Chrismas concert and also in their annual March spring concert. Included in the spring concert were such selections as Cerman’s Richard 1/] Overture, Pax et Labor by Pares, and Crofe’s Mississippi Suite Overture. ' rd Recognition should also be extended to the band small groups who performed 5 throughout the school year. '

Musically speaking, the Boone High Orchestra, un(ler the direction of Konrad Scholl, performed in its usual excellent fashion. However, one aspect was different this year. This was the first year for the orchestra to enjoy the modern facilities of the new school addition. The orchestra made two major appearances this year. One was at the December Christmas concert; the other was at the annual spring concert in February. Included in the latter concert were such selections as Tschaikovsky’s Pathetique Symphony, Oberon Overture by Von Weber, and Kreutz’s Mosquito Serenade. Orchestra small groups also performed very admirably throughout the school year. I

FIRST SEMESTER MEMBERS

Student Council

Our Federal Government has its Congress, our state and our local governments have their principal governing bodies, and we students of Boone High OFFICERS School also have our own governing body, the student council. Our student council actually is a governing body “of the students, by the students, and for the students.” Through the years, the student councils at Boone High have always been dedicated to the same purpose-——t0devote their time and efforts to the betterment and general welfare of Boone High School. However, since the introduction last year of a new staggered-term system of election for members, " the student council has become more and more ef ficient as time has progressed. With this in mind, the student council this year combined the experience of some of its members with the willingness and interest of all the members to make a very busy and L efficient year.

Student Council

Contrary to past tradition, the student body elected a girl to head the council the second semester. This very active and qualified person was Kay Narey. Assisting Kay the second semester were these officers: vice president, Jim Anderson; secretary, Bill Herman; treasurer, Charlotte Sawyer; and sergeant-at-arms, Mick Ferry.

OFFICERS

As is usual with the advent of the second semester. some of the old members were re placed. and others were re-elected, hut always a numlver of the present members remain. This provides for the element of experience, which is so essential to an efficient governing organization. The duties and accomplishments of the student council during the second semester were very similar to those of the first semester. They might include the sponsoring of a school dance, raising money for a school project, or assisting the faculty in some manner. Hats off to lVlr. Lovin and the Student Council for an industrious and successful year. Sponsoring this page is BOONE STATE BANK & TRUST COMPANY BOOSTER CLUB

The Boone High football team may not have ended the 1955 season with an ia impressive success. The string Boone of victories, team’s losses but in were terms mainly of sportsmanship, based on injuries. the 1955 At the season‘ time was of the Boone-Ames game four regulars were injured. Many times the expert coaching of Jim McLeran.paid off, as in the Grinnell Game. The Toreadors stopped a terrific drive to defeat Marshalltown 7-0. Everyone agrees that this was not the best season for the Toreadors, but Boone has potentialities for a great team next year.

Seniors on this year’s squad are, left to right: David Gibbs, J. Peterson, Larry Bergloff, Rich Byerly, Bob Harder, and Tom Miller.

Jim Anderson presents Coach Clifton’s jersey to co captains Chuck Musser and J. Peterson. Clifton’s old number, “23"-, will be retired. Coach Clifton’s Toreadors started the 1955-56 basketball season off with a bang by winning their first three games. Then came a losing streak of four. To- break this streak they beat D. M. Tech and Denison and nearly won the Grinnell game but lost out in overtime. After then losing five games, they whipped into Oskaloosa and succeeded in winning that game. The boys then went to district play and showed that they had what it takes by winning both of their district games. This made them eligible for the sectionals. They were paired with North, a tough team from Des Moines, whom the Toreadors had beaten once before by only two points. After decisively winning this game, they were to play Ames, their long-time rival. This game was probably the most heartbreaking game of the season for the squad. After Boone—53.playing a beautiful game in both offense and defense, the score was Ames——55,

The school spirit was really lifted in these last four games and when it came time for the Boone-Ames battle, there were _l,l()()fans in the Iowa State Armory to cheer the Toreadors on. The students formed a snake dance all around the floor while the two teams were warming up. They shouted and cheered for their team loud enough to prove that win or lose. they will still stay behind them all the way. The sophomore team ended up with a record of 9-6. Two of the sophomore boys were promoted to the varsity squad at the beginning of the year. These were Jack Langmade and Bob Musser. Rod Von Krog, another sophomore, was put on the varsity team for the district and sectional games. Coaches Clifton and McIntyre are to be commended for their fine work this year.

Swimming This year’s swimming team is the best that Boone High School has had in five years. After winning four meets and losing six, the swimming team closed the season by placing eighth in the state. It should be noted that under Coach Brookhart’s capable leadership, five meet records were set by the team. Four seniors——JimLawless, Wallace Arringdale, Tom Reed, and Jim Miller— were on the team this year. Wally Arringdale and Tony Williams were the top divers this year. Dave Nelson and Tom Reed accumulated the greatest number of points.

Track

Boone High boys who like to run, jump, or throw usually satisfy their desires by becoming members of the track team. The team has made excellent showings in pre vious years and look for the same results this year. Pictured at the left is the beauti ful Boone High track. '

Golf

Fast becoming a quite prominent spring sport at Boone High is golf, and Boone High boasts a fine group of young golfers. With most of the team returning this year, they are expected to continue their fine record. Pictured at left are Coach Lovin and the returning lettermen for this year.

Tennis

The word “love” is usually associated with the spring time and can be heard quite often around Boone when the Boone’ High Tennis team goes into action. Al though tennis is just in its infancy at Boone High, the team last year made a fine showing and expects even more pos sibilities this year. Pictured at the left are the team and Coach Hokanson. The scores of the Rockwell City and Jewell games were 40 to 39 and 32 to 31 respectively.
