The institute works to transfer this knowledge for the benefit of society. EMBL offers services to the scientific community, trains the next generation of scientists, and strives to integrate the life sciences across Europe. EMBL is international, innovative, and interdisciplinary. Its more than 1700 staff, from over 80 countries, operate across six sites in Barcelona (Spain), Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Heidelberg (Germany), Hinxton (UK), and Rome (Italy). EMBL was established in 1974 as an intergovernmental organisation and is supported by over 20 member states. Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT -Italian Institute of Technology) is a scientific research center established in 2003 by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research and the Ministry of Economy and Finance, in order to promote excellence in both basic and applied research and to facilitate economic development at the national level. IIT scientific activities started in 2006, they are multidisciplinary with a very strong approach to technology transfer. Thre are 1800 IIT staff from 50 countries. Research is carried out in the Central Research laboratory in Genoa (IIT headquarters), in 11 research satellite centers across Italy and in 2 outstations in US.
