24 | moulton scene • spring 2015 Debbie Bastin Headteacher Moulton Primary School

t is with great pleasure that I present my first report for the Moulton Scene as new Headteacher of Moulton Primary School. I took over from Pete Sturges following his retirement this summer and am delighted to be joining such a hard-working and dedicated team. I look forward to sharing information Iabout our lovely school and as you will see from the photos below, it is a very busy place! Part of the community … conducted themselves around the In October we held our special village, and residents commented Harvest Assembly in which children on how polite and friendly they were. from every year group contributed Thank you to the residents that sent songs and poems to celebrate this in thank you cards and letters – this traditional festival. Parents generously showed the children how much their donated food parcels which were efforts are appreciated. As always, then delivered safely to some of the it is part of our role in school to help older members of Moulton Village the children develop respect and by our Year 5 and 6 children. We are appreciation for different members of very proud of the way the children our community.

A meaningful curriculum… At Moulton Primary, we are busy developing and shaping our curriculum to give the children a broad and balanced education that will prepare them for their future lives; this means everything from learning how to keep themselves safe using the internet or crossing the village roads, to the key areas of learning covered by the National Curriculum. Across the school we have ‘themed’ our curriculum to cover all of these areas and to provide a learning ‘journey’ through which children develop key skills and understanding. This term our theme has been ‘Decades’ with each year group focusing on a ten-year period of history. This enabled children in Year 2 and 3 to learn about life as a Victorian child, children in Year 4 and 5 to learn about the events leading up to the Live Aid famine relief campaign of the 1980s, and for Year 6 to learn about the 1950s.

These photos show Year 2 and 3 when learning by rote and that the enjoying a Victorian ‘trip in time’ in teachers were extremely strict, which they re-enacted a whole day especially when rules were broken as if it was 1877. They found out and canes brandished! that lessons could be tedious Year 6 discussed the ethics of sending the Russian dog Laika into space as part of their 1950s topic. From their placards, you can see that they did not agree with this but we are pleased to say that the protest ended peacefully. Year 4 and 5 re-enacted the struggle of Ethiopians during the 1980s famine. They set up a camp, using basic equipment, to help them understand the experience first-hand and used this as a stimulus for their writing. The whole topic ended with a celebration of the children’s learning with special assemblies in which the children showed what they had learnt over the term.
