THE TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 21, 2018 The St. Ann “APP”: Associate Pastor’s Perspective - I recently had the opportunity to attend a talk given by Fr. Dennis Billy, C.S.S.R., a Redemptorist priest known for his work of teaching Christian moral formation and spiritual direction to both laity and clergy. One particular comment Fr. Billy shared made a lasting impression on me: “If one prays daily, the seeker will undoubtedly find God; if one doesn’t pray, a wandering and aimless journey through life awaits. Therefore, every priest must teach his parishioners to pray well.” St. Alphonsus Ligouri, the founder of the Redemptorist religious order (of which St. John Neumann was a member), suggested this simple but profound format for daily prayer: Begin with a moment of silence, followed by a statement of faith (“Lord, I believe in You”) an act of Contrition (“Have mercy on me”) and then a request for Light (“Give me Your Light/Wisdom”) After doing so, reflect on your daily needs, share with God your concerns about them, ask then for what you/others need, and listen in silence (for a few moments) to see what resolution our Lord may be asking you to make. End the time of prayer with an Act of Thanksgiving (“Thanks, Lord, for the Light received”) and a Request for Grace (“Help Me to Persevere”). It is, of course, only one possible way to pray, but as St. Alphonsus saw it, a very practical one for the busy person to stay in daily communication with our Lord and with one’s own heart and soul. Said the holy bishop: “Without prayer, we have neither light nor strength to advance in the way that leads to God.” Let us, then, as a parish community make it our aim to keep advancing together! On All Soul's Day, Friday Nov. 2nd - An evening Mass will be offered at 5:30pm. In this Mass we will especially remember all those buried from St. Ann's Church in the past year. We will also pray for the souls of the loved ones and friends of our parishioners who passed away during the year as well as remember all of our deceased who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith. If you had a family member buried from St. Ann's this year, please join us and invite others in your family. The names will be published in the Mass program and enshrined in the sanctuary during the month of November. Those who have died during this past year will also be announced during a post-Communion period of reflection. Lighted candles will be carried in procession and brought forward as names are being read. If you would like to take part in the candle ceremony, please contact Jane at the rectory. From the Parish Manager’s desk…..St. Ann School Annual Fund Collection Next Weekend! St. Ann School has proudly provided countless memories that have spanned generations with the reality of a Catholic Education - since 1899. The Parish can only continue to support the mission of the school through the combined generosity of our parishioners and friends. We have started the St. Ann School Annual Fund to help us insure the ever evolving needs of the school, faculty and students at the forefront of our mission. Naturally people might ask the question, “Who will benefit from my donation?” Our answer is that our students will benefit directly from gift. 100% of your donation goes directly to support St. Ann School - all of us have a stake in Catholic Education. Thus your gift will be paying it forward so that others can continue to benefit from St. Ann School’s aggressive Academics, Athletics and Performing Arts program. Please consider making a gift next weekend or in the future to the St. Ann School Annual Fund. Doing so allows the Parish to put faith in your children’s future through prayer, liturgy and service.
