Directions From Wilson’s Corner proceed towards Ongar on the A128, passing through Pilgrim’s Hatch and continue along the straight mile into Kelvedon Hatch. Upon reaching The Eagle pub on the left-hand side continue for 0.9 of a mile and the entrance to Old Kelvedon Grange will be denoted by picket fencing. Take the second drive on the right-hand side. Situation Old Kelvedon Grange is situated between Ongar and Brentwood. Ongar provides a more traditional village centre with a good range of restaurants and shops including Sainsbury’s and Tesco Express. Brentwood and Shenfield provide a more comprehensive range of shopping, educational and recreational facilities with both towns having mainline rail services to London’s Stratford and Liverpool Street. There is a good selection of both state and private schools in the nearby villages and the renowned Brentwood School is a little over 4 miles away. Descriptio n Old Kelvedon Grange is situated deep within mature grounds and was segregated from a larger detached building in c. 1976, an alteration carried out sympathetically. The house is constructed of timber frame with striking rendered and timbered elevations relieved by lead-light windows under a clay-tiled roof. The property is listed as being of Grade II of Architectural or Historical Interest and an extract from the listing states: “Formerly known as: The Grange, two houses adjoining. Early c.17, c.18 and late c.19…” Historical note: Terrier of 1610 records “The Rectory House of two storeys newly built.” This could date the brick stack inserted into a somewhat earlier smoke void and now occupying a smaller space. Further work in the 19th century, particularly when Reverend D W Peregrine spent £4,000 on the house and was responsible for the new wing at the south end and the ornamental timbering, apparently a tidy version of the early primary braced walling beneath. In 1931 the building ceased to be a rectory and was bought by Bertram Jones of Kelvedon Hall. Accommodation A timber door opens into a vestibule and in turn into an attractive dining room with exposed wooden floor and featuring an original hand water pump and brick fireplace. The kitchen/breakfast room which lies at the rear of the house overlooking the gardens, formerly a larder and tack room, is finished with an attractive brick floor with some Elizabethan restored areas. The kitchen is fitted with a range of Shaker-style units and incorporates and oil-fired AGA, 19th century former dairy sink and Perrin & Rowe hot tap, additionally there is a Wolf 2 draw under unit refrigerator. This opens on to a conservatory, framing lovely views of the property’s gardens and grounds. The living room is an attractive room with wood burner within a brick fireplace with some exposed timbers, a fitted dresser and overlooks the gardens to the front. Further accommodation on the ground floor includes a cloakroom and good-sized utility room/second kitchen. On the first floor are three individual bedrooms and a study. The Floorplans master bedroom with dual-aspect windows has a range of fitted Main House gross internal area = 2,725 sq ft / 253 sq m wardrobes and includes an en suite bathroom with a high flush W.C. and roll-top bath.
