Matt Lucas to Star with Philip Quast and John Partridge in Mike Batt's Press release for immediate release Thursday, 24 January 2019 Matt Lucas to star with Philip Quast and John Partridge in Mike Batt’s new recording of THE HUNTING OF THE SNARK Songwriter and entrepreneur Mike Batt today announced the first signings in his forthcoming all-star line-up for the first ever full-length recording of his score to the West End Show ‘The Hunting Of The Snark’, based on the Lewis Carroll poem. Batt produced the show at the Prince Edward Theatre in 1991, starring Kenny Everett as the Billiard Marker, Philip Quast as the Bellman and John Partridge as the Butcher. Quast (the only three-time winner of the Olivier Award for “Best Actor In A Musical”) played the Bellman in the original production, and Partridge (long-established East Enders star and recent winner of Celebrity Master Chef) played the Butcher. Now, 28 years later, they are revisiting their former roles, with Matt Lucas taking the part of the Billiard Marker, originally played by Kenny Everett. Mike Batt said “This is such a great development. With Kenny Everett, my late buddy, so sadly missed I can think of no one I would prefer to play this part than Matt. I’m also delighted that “Snark originals” Philip Quast and John Partridge, having gone from strength to strength in their careers, were still willing to take a step into the past and help me re-create the old magic. It’s a great start to the casting process of what is a very ambitious project, particularly in today’s challenging music business environment.” Matt Lucas said “I grew up listening to Mike’s music and I’m really excited to be working with him. I remember watching the concert version on TV and being enchanted by it, and I can’t wait to start learning the songs.' Philip Quast said “I am thrilled to set sail with some of the old crew again - especially with Mike at the helm of this beautiful, whimsical, haunting piece of work”. John Partridge said “This score is without doubt a masterpiece, and I am so looking forward to hearing it again after all this time. I was 19 when the voyage began, 28 years ago! Thanks to all those who will have helped to make it happen.” The substantial funding for this recording is being raised through crowdfunding site Pledge Music. A not-insignificant production, the recording will involve many days of recording with full orchestra, rock band and a cast of ten principal characters. Casting for the remaining characters is currently in progress. Asked why he is undertaking this project Mike explains “I have always wanted to make a recording of the full score, in addition to the shorter concept album that exists already, because 7 Broadbent Close, Highgate Village, London, N6 5JW t 020 3213 0135 f 020 8348 7776 e [email protected] www.republicmedia.net @republic_media the full dramatic piece contains so much more material that has never been recorded or released, and as an entirety I consider it to be the centrepiece of my life’s work to date” For further information please contact Republic Media, 020 3213 0135 [email protected] Additional information: Batt’s “The Hunting of The Snark” album began life in 1984 as a concept album starring John Gielgud, John Hurt, Roger Daltrey, Deniece Williams, Captain Sensible, Cliff Richard and Art Garfunkel, with instrumental contributions by George Harrison and Stephane Grappelli. Its release was prevented at the time by disagreements with the record company. Eventually it appeared years later on Batt’s own Dramatico label. Meanwhile a concert version at the Royal Albert Hall was televised by BBC2 in 1987 with John Hurt, Billy Connolly, Justin Hayward, Deniece Williams, Captain Sensible, Roger Daltrey and Midge Ure. In 1991, after a successful try-out at the State Theatre, Sydney, Batt produced it as a full-length musical at the Prince Edward Theatre. The new album will be faithful to the exact West End score, with a running time of two hours. MIKE BATT BIOGRAPHY “I thought that if life was like a Mars bar and you cut it up into little slices rather than eat it in one go, you’d get a lot more out of it,” says Mike Batt. He must have access to an awfully big piece of confectionery, as his unique career has plenty of tasty slices – singer-songwriter, composer, musician, record company boss, conductor, arranger, record producer and author. As well as being a solo performer in his own right, the roster of artists he has worked with is the cliched Who’s Who of music’s biggest names across the entire spectrum of performance from heavy metal Hawkwind to the rather cuddlier Wombles, with Art Garfunkel, Katie Melua, David Essex, Roger Daltrey, Vanessa Mae, Steeleye Span, Elkie Brooks and Cliff Richard, amongst many others. Mike has also won five Ivor Novello Awards, and the Queen quite likes him too, as in 2013, he was appointed Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order (LVO) for services to the Royal Household. He has composed commissioned pieces for various Royal and other ceremonial occasions. His hugely successful career(s) began as a child, when he joined a postal classical record club where you got four free EPs if you bought an album every year. He chose Strauss waltzes, Brahms’ Hungarian Dances, Carmen and Swan Lake, and started to fancy himself as a conductor, arranging the furniture into the shape of an orchestra when his parents were out, and being the Conductor. Combine this with his self-taught prowess at the piano, and love of verse with clever lyrics (one of his first works was setting the AA Milne poem Disobedience to his own music), plus playing with an R&B group in his hometown of Southampton, a musical career beckoned.
