    2015 Arthur Ellis Awards Toronto May 28, 2015 Hosted by comedian, actor and radio personality Allison Dore The Derrick Murdoch Award Known as the Chairman’s Award when first presented in 1984, it was later renamed in honour of its first recipient, Derrick Murdoch. Sylvia McConnell is the former owner and publisher of Napoleon & Company, a Canadian trade publishing house in Toronto, Canada. In 2011, after twenty- two years of producing great Canadian fiction, Napoleon and Company, which included the imprint Rendezvous Crime, was sold to Dundurn Press. Since selling her company, Sylvia McConnell has been working as a freelance book editor, as well as Sylvia McConnell an acquisitions editor.     Figure 1 Backlist Kim Dorland by Katerina Atanassova, Robert Enright and Jeffrey Spalding "Kim Dorland" explores the mind and work of one of Canada's most intriguing contemporary artists. Named Globe and Mail 'Artist of the Year' in 2013, Dorland has captured the public's imagination with his tour-de-force, visceral creations. His paintings are at once referential, material, psychological, beautiful, and uncomfortable, resulting in a body of work that is seemingly disparate but undeniably connected through its idiosyncratic - and maximal - use of paint in all its forms Author Bio Katerina Atanassova is the chief curator of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection. Since her appointment in 2009, she has led and curated several special exhibitions, among them The Tree: Form and Substance (2011) and You Are Here: Kim Dorland and the Return to Painting (2013). She was also the co-curator for the enormously successful international touring exhibition, Figure 1 Painting Canada: Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven.     Selected Canadian Mysteries, by Author As recommended by Kathleen Fraser for Learning Unlimited, January 2019 Cathy Ace: Welsh-born Canadian author of the Cate Morgan and WISE Women cozies, fun series set in Wales. Grant Allen: Born in Kingston, Ontario, author of An African Millionaire: Episodes in the Life of the Illustrious Colonel Clay (1897). Colonel Clay was a scoundrel and adventurer – and Allen almost equally scandalous. Thought the first Canadian to seriously attempt crime writing professionally. Arthur Conan Doyle completed his last novel. Lou Allin: The Belle Palmer series in Northern Ontario; Holly Martin (RCMP) series on Vancouver Island. Toni Anderson: “Smart, sexy thrillers with happily ever after.” Haven’t read this, but it was recommended to me. Hubert Aquin: In Prochaine Episode / Next Episode (1965), the narrator, like Aquin himself, turns his adventures into a spy thriller while awaiting trial for an unnamed crime, locked up in the psychiatric ward of a Montreal prison. Kelley Armstrong: The Rockton thrillers, starting with City of the Lost, are probably Armstrong’s most conventional novels, in that they contain no demons or werewolves, but they are by no means ordinary. Rockton is a tiny town hidden in the Yukon, where people like ex-cop Casey Duncan go to escape their pasts. Enthralling. Carolyn Arnold: Author of four very different series, including Brandon Fisher FBI, set in the US. Catherine Astolfo: Series featuring Emily Taylor, small-town Ontario school principal. Margaret Atwood: Yes, most of her novels have a mystery at the core. Not that she always resolves the mystery, however. Take Alias Grace, for example.
