The History of the Slovak-Hungarian “Little War” and Its Interpretations in National Histories István Janek Before tackling the events of the “Little War”, let us take a brief outlook on the study of it in Hungarian and Slovak historical literature. A great number of Slovak histori- ans have written on this issue producing many articles and conference publications in Slovakia. Here I would like to highlight the most important ones from four his- OPEN ACCESS torians: Ladislav Deák, František Cséfalvay, Zoltán Katreba and Ján Petrik. A lot has been written on the air warfare between the two armies as well: Juraj Rejninec and Ján Petrik from Slovakia and Iván Pataky, László Rozsos together with Gyula Sárhidai and Csaba B. Stenge from Hungary must be mentioned.1 A thorough study of the dip- lomatic aspect has been done only by István Janek in Hungary.2 Ján Petrik has worked at the local history level and he also published a short but detailed monograph on the Hungarian bombing of Spiška Nová Ves.3 Cséfalvay and Katreba are military histori- ans who work for the Slovak Institution of Military History. They focus on the mili- tary events and publish in various Slovakian historical periodicals.4 Cséfalvay has also shown the political connections of military events.5 It is the merit of the works 1 J. Pulaski Policy Papers Komentarz Międzynarodowy Pułaskiego ISSN 2080-8852 Warsaw, 07.01.2019 Author: Maciej Szopa Poland’s Air Force to Procure New Fighter Aircraft: the ‘Harpia’ Programme In the aftermath of the political reforms of the late 1980s and the early 1990s, Poland’s policy makers recognised a growing need to procure a new fighter jet aircraft. At the time, the Polish Armed Forces operated only Soviet-built fighter jets of several types such as MiG-21, MiG-23, Su-20 and Su-22 fighter-bombers and a newly introduced MiG-29 fighter. В статті розглянута остання перемога надводних кораблів Японського імперського флоту над надводними кораблями Військово-морських сил США, що відбулась в бухті Ормок 3 грудня 1944 р. Через помилки під час підготовки та проведення бою переважаючі сили американців не змогли знищити японський конвой та були змушені відступити. Метою статті є дослідження дій надводних кораблів Військово-морських сил США проти надводних кораблів противника в бухті Ормок 3 грудня 1944 р. та аналіз причин їх невдачі. Битво в бухті Ормок є показовим прикладом незалежних дій незначних наземних сил армії США за відсутності підтримки з боку авіації. Вона стала демонстрацією того, що переважаючий потенціал бойових суден та добре підготовлений екіпаж на стали запорукою перемоги у зв’язку з цілою низкою факторів, які автор описує в статті. Не зважаючи на те, що ця порівняно невелика битва майже не змінила результати битви біля Лейте і не внесла чогось нового в теорію військово-морських операцій її хід став підтвердженням неможливості надводних військово-морських суден США здійснювати ефективні операції без повітряної підтримки. Цей бій, також, підтвердив надзвичайну важливість планування, лідерських якостях та точних рішеннях командування військово-морських операцій. We are in Los Angeles, meeting a veteran of the Great Patriotic War. Please introduce yourself and tell us about your life before the war. What was your family like, what did your parents do, what sort of school did you attend? How did the war begin for you and what did you do during the war? My name is Gregory Fein and I was born on April 18, 1921, in Propolsk [Prapoisk], which was later renamed Slavgorod [Slawharad], Mahilyow Region, Belarus. My father was an artisan bootmaker. We lived Propolsk until 1929. That year my family moved to Krasnapolle, a nearby town in the same region. We moved because my father had to work in an artel. In order for his children to have an education, he had to join an artisan cooperative rather than work alone. His skills were in demand in Kransopole [Krasnapolle], so we moved there, because there was a cooperative there. There were five children in the family and I was the youngest. My eldest sister Raya worked as a labor and delivery nurse her entire life. -

By Marcus Weisgerber rom the looks of things, this could be a military joint venture like no other. Eleven European nations— Fsome of them NATO members, others not—are teaming up with the US to create a new C-17-based strategic airlift fleet. In just a few weeks, the first of three C-17 airlifters will touch down at a new home in Hungary—Papa Air Base, roughly midway between Budapest and Vienna. The former Warsaw Pact fighter base will be home for the versatile cargo DOD photo by Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael B. Lavender haulers and hundreds of airmen from across Europe and the United States. It will be the permanent station for those who will fly the C-17s on cargo missions around the world. The multinational group will use the Boeing-made airlifters for missions ranging from troop transport, to equip- ment delivery and humanitarian relief operations. 38 AIR FORCE Magazine / June 2009 The memorandum of understanding agreed upon by all participants makes “it USAF photo difficult for any country to interfere with one another because each country can use the hours as they see fit,” Zazworsky said. “It’s not exactly a pay-as-you-go; it’s more of a front-end-loaded program.” The fact that the C-17s do not belong to an institution was “a signal,” said Swedish Col. Fredrik Heden, vice com- mander of the wing, in a March interview. -

Capabilities – In this regard, you may wish to consider future integrated capability development and the planning and delivery requirements to support a joint force approach in terms of new equipment, professional military education and training, maintenance and development of infrastructure, developments in military doctrine, and transformative concepts, including specialist capabilities, that prepare and support the Defence Forces for future operations. This proposal is in respect of the provision of effective air defence aircraft for our state. In this Centenary year of our independence as a nation it is embarrassing and shameful that we currently rely on a arrangement made by Dept. Defence, the Dept of Foreign Affairs and The Irish Aviation Authority with British Defence authorities to have the RAF provide air protection cover over this republic. To make matters worse this arrangement was entered into without any reference to the Defence Forces and without any input from them. I accept that the provision of modern fighter aircraft is a potentially expensive and technically challenging task. However here are some options which I am certain will address the current shortfall and resulting unsatisfactory state of affairs. 1. We can approach some of our EU colleague states with a view to purchasing surplus fighter aircraft from them. This will be time consuming and may not result in a satisfactory outcome, never the less we should consider this option. I won’t identify potential aircraft as I would be guessing at to what our EU neighbours/allies have in their surplus stocks. -

DUTCH AVIATION SUPPORT Pilot & Airplane August 2003 SLOVAK AIR FORCE TODAY SLOVAK AIR FORCE TODAY Today Slovak Air Force tries to be an updated air force with the aim to be fully compatible with western air forces in the Nato-structure. Although not a member of this organisation yet it hopes to enter the Nato in future after political agreements. Slovakia is integrated in the Partnership for Peace (PfP) exercises and is eager to learn expertise from the other participants, especially the western counterparts in Europe like in the recently Cooperative Key exercises at St. Dizier air base in France. This exercise comprised actions like medical evacuation and CSAR (Combat Search and Rescue) under cooperation of United Nations flag in peacekeepingoperations. Already before the Slovak air Force was requested to join UN-operations and stationed 2 Mi-17 helicopters in Banja Luka, Bosnia until replaced by a Czech unit. The inventory of the Slovak Air Force consist of aircraft made in Russia or former Czechoslovakia. Also the structure of the air force inherited at the time the Czech Republic and Slovakia split up in 1993 was of the typical Russian Air Regiments. Slovakia then faced a modernisation period with transfer of squadrons, disbandment of squadrons and withdrawal of some aircraft from active duty. The structure was transformed to western-style Air Wings and aircraft were to be integrated in western Air Operationalability Procedures. Therefore money was reserved to change and improve the avionics of the planes to western standards (for example from Glonass satellite navigation to GPS). This proces is still under progress, yet not fully implemented and compatability is still limited (aircraft are partly Nato-standards and partly ICAO-standards) but this aspect will get the attention it needs in future. -

Hungarian Gripens Have Arrived
VO Info 17 620:15542/06 PRESS RELEASE Nr E 2 21.3.2006 Hungarian Gripens have arrived Today the first five Hungarian Air Force Gripen aircraft arrived in Hungary The five (5) Gripen multi-role fighters, the latest C and D versions of the aircraft, are the first of fourteen (14) ordered by Hungary. The aircraft were flown by four pilots from the Hungarian Air Force and three from the Swedish Air Force. The flight, which departed from FMV´s facility outside Linköping, lasted for about two hours. - “The flight went very well. The Gripen aircraft was easy to handle and everything functioned perfectly”, - said Hungarian Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Gabor Toth after landing at the Kecskémet air base in Hungary, where the Gripens will be based. The remaining nine (9) Gripen aircraft will be delivered to Hungary progressively until December 2007. The Gripen aircraft will now undergo inspection by the Hungarian Ministry of Defence before they are formally handed over to the customer at a ceremony being held on 30 March 2006. The first groups of Hungarian pilots and technicians, who have been undergoing training in Sweden since January 2005, have completed their training and are back in Hungary. Hungary is the third nation, after Sweden and the Czech Republic, to operate the fourth generation Gripen fighter. Hungary will receive the latest C and D versions of the Gripen aircraft. These aircraft are the latest C and D versions of the Gripen aircraft and are equipped with full color cockpit displays, a retractable air-to-air refueling probe and are fully NATO-interoperable. -

The number of operational units had stabilized and there were no requirements for further activation or disbandment of units for the foreseeable future. Units within the structure of the State Air Defense (PVOS) were by now re-equipped with MiG-21PF (39 aircraft) and PFM (50 aircraft) interceptors. These were complemented within the units by MiG-21F fighters. Specifically, the units that this all pertains to were the 1st slp at Ceske Budejovice, the 8th slp at Mosnov and the 11th slp at Zatec. The slp was the local designation for a fighter regiment. The situation was different with the 10th Air Army, within the structure of Tactical Air Force. Its units had to make do with the MiG-21F, complemented by the MiG-19S and PM. It was only with the 9th slp at Bechyne that twelve MiG-21PFM aircraft served, representing Mach 2 radar equipped assets. Their allotment to the unit was only temporary, and after the delivery of the MiG-21MF they were returned to the PVOS. The 47th pzlp received the first of twenty five MiG-21R aircraft. At the time, the requirement for MiG-21F fighters was satisfied by domestic production and by the time the end of 1969 rolled around, there were 121 of them in service.
