    EFSA supporting publication 2015:EN-795 EXTERNAL SCIENTIFIC REPORT Inventory and review of quantitative models for spread of plant pests for use in pest risk assessment for the EU territory1 NERC Centre for Ecology and Hydrology 2 Maclean Building, Benson Lane, Crowmarsh Gifford, Wallingford, OX10 8BB, UK ABSTRACT This report considers the prospects for increasing the use of quantitative models for plant pest spread and dispersal in EFSA Plant Health risk assessments. The agreed major aims were to provide an overview of current modelling approaches and their strengths and weaknesses for risk assessment, and to develop and test a system for risk assessors to select appropriate models for application. First, we conducted an extensive literature review, based on protocols developed for systematic reviews. The review located 468 models for plant pest spread and dispersal and these were entered into a searchable and secure Electronic Model Inventory database. A cluster analysis on how these models were formulated allowed us to identify eight distinct major modelling strategies that were differentiated by the types of pests they were used for and the ways in which they were parameterised and analysed. These strategies varied in their strengths and weaknesses, meaning that no single approach was the most useful for all elements of risk assessment. Therefore we developed a Decision Support Scheme (DSS) to guide model selection. The DSS identifies the most appropriate strategies by weighing up the goals of risk assessment and constraints imposed by lack of data or expertise. Searching and filtering the Electronic Model Inventory then allows the assessor to locate specific models within those strategies that can be applied.

Padilla‑Hurtado6, Diana Molina1, Carmenza Gongora1, Ricardo Acuña1, Jef Stuart7 & Pablo Benavides1 Cofee berry borer—CBB (Hypothenemus hampei) is a globally important economic pest of cofee (Cofea spp.). Despite current insect control methods for managing CBB, development of future control strategies requires a better understanding of its biology and interaction with its host plant. Towards this objective, we performed de novo CBB genome and transcriptome sequencing, improved CBB genome assembly and predicted 18,765 protein‑encoding genes. Using genome and transcriptome data, we annotated the genes associated with chemosensation and found a reduced gene repertoire composed by 67 odorant receptors (ORs), 62 gustatory receptors (GRs), 33 ionotropic receptors (IRs) and 29 odorant‑binding proteins (OBPs). In silico transcript abundance analysis of these chemosensory genes revealed expression enrichment in CBB adults compared with larva. Detection of diferentially expressed chemosensory genes between males and females is likely associated with diferences in host‑fnding behavior between sexes. Additionally, we discovered male‑specifc genome content and identifed candidate male‑specifc expressed genes on these scafolds, suggesting that a Y‑like chromosome may be involved in the CBB’s functional haplodiploid mechanism of sex determination. Cofee Berry Borer (CBB), Hypothenemus hampei (Coleoptera:Curculionidae) is the most devastating insect pest of cofee crops (Cofea arabica and C. canephora) worldwide. CBB integrated pest management (IPM) has advanced with improvements in sanitation practices and biological control, using both parasitoids and fungal entomopathogens (Beauveria bassiana).

Further, while the linkage between insects and vegetation is recognized as a foundation for trophic interactions, the mechanisms that govern insect populations are still debated. I investigated the interrelationships between forest disturbance, the insect prey base, and bats in eastern North America. I assessed predator and prey in Central Appalachia across a gradient of forest disturbance (Chapter Two). I conducted acoustic surveys of bat echolocation concurrent with insect surveys. Bat activity and insect occurrence varied regionally, seasonally, and across the disturbance gradient. Bat activity was positively related with disturbance, whereas insects demonstrated a mixed response. While Lepidopteran occurrence was negatively related with disturbance, Dipteran occurrence was positively related with disturbance. Shifts in Coleopteran occurrence were not observed. Myotine bat activity was most correlated with sub-canopy vegetation, whereas lasiurine bat activity was more correlated with canopy-level vegetation, suggesting differences in foraging behavior. Lepidoptera were most correlated with variables describing understory vegetation, whereas Coleoptera and Diptera were more correlated with canopy-level vegetative structure, suggesting differences in host resource utilization.

March 1981 THE ECOLOGY OF INSECT PEST POPULATIONS IN MAIZE STORAGE CRIBS IN NIGERIA Richard Hugh Markham Abstract This study considered the insect populations infesting white dent maize stored in well-ventilated cribs at two localities in South West Nigeria. The pest complex was dominated by Sitophilus zeamais (Col.: Curculionidae) but included a great diversity of other pest species and natural enemies. The incidence of individual species was studied from pre-harvest infestation through six to ten months of storage and was shown to follow a consistent succession. The spatial distribution of insects within a crib was not uniform and individual species showed consistent patterns of distribution at a particular time. The seasonal incidence and distribution patterns of major species are discussed in terms of observed changes in grain moisture content, temperature and grain damage. The roles of intra- and interspecific relationships in limiting populations are considered. Sitophilus populations rapidly reach a 'plateau' and it is concluded that further significant increase is prevented by this insect's responses to its own high population density. The relationship between the field infestation and subsequent pest population increase in store is considered with particular reference to the effects of time of harvest, removal or retention of the husks and of damage* caused in the field by Lepidoptera larvae.
