Inventory and Review of Quantitative Models for Spread of Plant Pests for Use in Pest Risk Assessment for the EU Territory1
EFSA supporting publication 2015:EN-795 EXTERNAL SCIENTIFIC REPORT Inventory and review of quantitative models for spread of plant pests for use in pest risk assessment for the EU territory1 NERC Centre for Ecology and Hydrology 2 Maclean Building, Benson Lane, Crowmarsh Gifford, Wallingford, OX10 8BB, UK ABSTRACT This report considers the prospects for increasing the use of quantitative models for plant pest spread and dispersal in EFSA Plant Health risk assessments. The agreed major aims were to provide an overview of current modelling approaches and their strengths and weaknesses for risk assessment, and to develop and test a system for risk assessors to select appropriate models for application. First, we conducted an extensive literature review, based on protocols developed for systematic reviews. The review located 468 models for plant pest spread and dispersal and these were entered into a searchable and secure Electronic Model Inventory database. A cluster analysis on how these models were formulated allowed us to identify eight distinct major modelling strategies that were differentiated by the types of pests they were used for and the ways in which they were parameterised and analysed. These strategies varied in their strengths and weaknesses, meaning that no single approach was the most useful for all elements of risk assessment. Therefore we developed a Decision Support Scheme (DSS) to guide model selection. The DSS identifies the most appropriate strategies by weighing up the goals of risk assessment and constraints imposed by lack of data or expertise. Searching and filtering the Electronic Model Inventory then allows the assessor to locate specific models within those strategies that can be applied. -

Specimens of Scolytinae and Platypodinae from this survey, as well as specimens in the American Samoa Community College Collection were identified. A total of 53 species of Scolytinae and two species of Platypodinae are reported. Fourteen species of Scolytinae and one species of Platypodinae are reported as new to American Samoa. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Two new Hypothenemus species found in southern and southeastern USA are described: Hypothenemus piaparolinae sp. n. and Hypothenemus subterrestris sp. n. The distribution and habits suggest these species are native and widely distrib- uted, but elusive, and not recently arrived exotics. Both appear to have unusual biology: H. subterrestris appears to live in material on or in the ground, and H. piaparolinae has only been collected from the xylem of extensively rotten, fungus- filled twigs. Key words: Cryphalini, Bark beetles, pygmy borers Introduction Hypothenemus Westwood, 1836 is the most speciose genus in the tribe Cryphalini (Curculionidae: Scolytinae), with 181 species described (Vega et al. 2015). Of these, there are 23 species currently known from North America (Atkinson 2015). The species of Hypothenemus are known from an incredibly diverse selection of plant families and plant material. -

While traps were shown to capture significant numbers of beetles per day, and the occurrence of beetles in alternate hosts was quite rare, the unique situation of coffee culture in Hawaii will make this pest extremely challenging to manage in the Islands. Padilla‑Hurtado6, Diana Molina1, Carmenza Gongora1, Ricardo Acuña1, Jef Stuart7 & Pablo Benavides1 Cofee berry borer—CBB (Hypothenemus hampei) is a globally important economic pest of cofee (Cofea spp.). Despite current insect control methods for managing CBB, development of future control strategies requires a better understanding of its biology and interaction with its host plant. Towards this objective, we performed de novo CBB genome and transcriptome sequencing, improved CBB genome assembly and predicted 18,765 protein‑encoding genes. Using genome and transcriptome data, we annotated the genes associated with chemosensation and found a reduced gene repertoire composed by 67 odorant receptors (ORs), 62 gustatory receptors (GRs), 33 ionotropic receptors (IRs) and 29 odorant‑binding proteins (OBPs). In silico transcript abundance analysis of these chemosensory genes revealed expression enrichment in CBB adults compared with larva. Detection of diferentially expressed chemosensory genes between males and females is likely associated with diferences in host‑fnding behavior between sexes. Additionally, we discovered male‑specifc genome content and identifed candidate male‑specifc expressed genes on these scafolds, suggesting that a Y‑like chromosome may be involved in the CBB’s functional haplodiploid mechanism of sex determination. Cofee Berry Borer (CBB), Hypothenemus hampei (Coleoptera:Curculionidae) is the most devastating insect pest of cofee crops (Cofea arabica and C. canephora) worldwide. CBB integrated pest management (IPM) has advanced with improvements in sanitation practices and biological control, using both parasitoids and fungal entomopathogens (Beauveria bassiana).
