To my delight, at the end of Chapter IV, I found mention of Miss Margaret Cragg, the sister of my great great grandfather. The book based on Mrs. Cryer’s articles is now very rare, so the opportunity has been taken to reproduce it. This version has been produced from a photocopy of the book by computer scanning, using an optical character recognition programme. Computer scanning is never completely accurate, particularly with punctuation marks, and when working from a document with low contrast. While the final version has been subjected to proof reading and computer based spelling checks, a few errors may remain, for which I am responsible. Many of the sentences and paragraphs are very long and the division into chapters is somewhat arbitrary, but the book has been reproduced as written. The numbering of chapter XIII has been corrected and a few changes have been made to the format for reasons of clarity.

    This walk description is from happyhiker.co.uk Lothersdale Loop Starting point and OS Grid reference Triangular parking area on road at east end of Lothersdale (SD 961460) Ordnance Survey map OL 21 South Pennines Distance 12 miles Traffic light rating Introduction: I call this the Lothersdale Loop because it is nicely alliterative and because it is a loop! The walk takes in Lothersdale, Pinhaw Beacon, Thornton-in- Craven, a stretch of the Leeds Liverpool Canal and Earby. It is an easy walk through pleasant countryside with a spell of moderate ascent out of Earby. Lothersdale is one of those places that is almost a myth. It is not somewhere you go through on the way to anywhere else and the chances are that if you arrive in Lothersdale, that’s where you are going. It is not that easy to find. It is a tranquil untouched by time sort of place. According to the oracle of Wikipedia, no house in the village is connected to mains water. This has had the effect of limiting the amount of development that has taken place. The most straightforward way to get to Lothersdale is from the A629 Keighley to Skipton Road. Turn off at the roundabout on to the B6172. At the A6068 Colne Road turn right. Pass all the shops than at a mini roundabout, turn right on to Wheatlands Lane.

The Register provides an Wannual snapshot of historic sites known to be at risk from neglect, decay or inappropriate development. Nationally, there are more barrows on the Register than any other type of site. The main risk to their survival is ploughing. The good news is that since 2014 we have reduced the number of barrows at risk by over 130, by working with owners and, in particular, Natural England to improve their management. This picture is repeated in Yorkshire, where the greatest concentration of barrows at risk is in the rich farmland of the Wolds.
