    MEMORIES OF COLNE By Mrs. Cryer, of Burnley (Formerly Miss Margaret Jane Ward, of Colne) in Collaboration with Mr. Willie Bell, of Burnley (Formerly of Colne) Reprinted from the “Colne and Nelson Times” March to August 1910 (Scanned with optical character recognition and reformatted by Craig Thornber, January 1998) -1- Introduction In 1910, Mrs. Cryer produced a series of articles for the “Colne and Nelson Times”, recalling her memories of Colne in the 1850’s. She had a remarkable memory and recounted the names and details of most of the town’s shop-keepers and their families. The book is a treasure trove for all those with family history interests in Colne in the middle of last century. To my delight, at the end of Chapter IV, I found mention of Miss Margaret Cragg, the sister of my great great grandfather. The book based on Mrs. Cryer’s articles is now very rare, so the opportunity has been taken to reproduce it. This version has been produced from a photocopy of the book by computer scanning, using an optical character recognition programme. Computer scanning is never completely accurate, particularly with punctuation marks, and when working from a document with low contrast. While the final version has been subjected to proof reading and computer based spelling checks, a few errors may remain, for which I am responsible. Many of the sentences and paragraphs are very long and the division into chapters is somewhat arbitrary, but the book has been reproduced as written. The numbering of chapter XIII has been corrected and a few changes have been made to the format for reasons of clarity.

The Local Government Boundary Commission for England has decided to give effect to the recommendations and, in exercise of the power conferred by section 92(3) of the Act, makes the following Order: Citation and Commencement 1.—(1) This Order may be cited as the District of Craven (Electoral Changes) Order 2012. (2) With the exception of articles 4 and 5, this Order comes into force— (a) for the purpose of proceedings preliminary or relating to the election of councillors, on the day after it is made; (b) for all other purposes, on the ordinary day of election of councillors in 2013.     South Craven School Supported by South Craven Academy Trust Admissions Policy 2021/2022 Introduction South Craven School Academy Trust is the admission authority for South Craven School and is as such responsible for setting fair, clear objective arrangements and criteria for the school. In doing so the Trust has complied with the School Admission Code (December 2014), Equality Act 2010, Human Rights Act 1998 and the Schools Standards and Framework Act 1998. The Secretary of State does have the power to vary this requirement where there is demonstrable need. It is the responsibility of the Governing Body of the school to work with NYCC to ensure that the policies agreed are correctly administered by the school. As the admission authority for South Craven School, parents applying for places in Year 7 apply via the Common Application Form (CAF) of the LA in which they live. North Yorkshire or Bradford Councils will provide the CAF for families making applications and will also notify families of allocated places on National Offer Day. Allocation of Places For 2021/22 the school has a planned admission number (PAN) of 270 for entry into Year 7. If the school is not over-subscribed all applicants will be offered a place. Where there are more applications for places than places available, places will be allocated in line with the over-subscription criteria below.     This walk description is from happyhiker.co.uk Lothersdale Loop Starting point and OS Grid reference Triangular parking area on road at east end of Lothersdale (SD 961460) Ordnance Survey map OL 21 South Pennines Distance 12 miles Traffic light rating Introduction: I call this the Lothersdale Loop because it is nicely alliterative and because it is a loop! The walk takes in Lothersdale, Pinhaw Beacon, Thornton-in- Craven, a stretch of the Leeds Liverpool Canal and Earby. It is an easy walk through pleasant countryside with a spell of moderate ascent out of Earby. Lothersdale is one of those places that is almost a myth. It is not somewhere you go through on the way to anywhere else and the chances are that if you arrive in Lothersdale, that’s where you are going. It is not that easy to find. It is a tranquil untouched by time sort of place. According to the oracle of Wikipedia, no house in the village is connected to mains water. This has had the effect of limiting the amount of development that has taken place. Unfortunately on the day I did the walk, the weather did not live up to the BBC promise so I must apologise for the relatively poor photos but hopefully they will whet your appetite for what could be! The most straightforward way to get to Lothersdale is from the A629 Keighley to Skipton Road. Turn off at the roundabout on to the B6172. At the A6068 Colne Road turn right. Pass all the shops than at a mini roundabout, turn right on to Wheatlands Lane.

The Register provides an Wannual snapshot of historic sites known to be at risk from neglect, decay or inappropriate development. Nationally, there are more barrows on the Register than any other type of site. The main risk to their survival is ploughing. The good news is that since 2014 we have reduced the number of barrows at risk by over 130, by working with owners and, in particular, Natural England to improve their management. This picture is repeated in Yorkshire, where the greatest concentration of barrows at risk is in the rich farmland of the Wolds.
