P16 Layout 1 SPORTS MONDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2013 Europe win Seve Trophy FRANCE: Europe won the Seve Trophy yesterday for the first time since 2000 when they edged a suspense-filled match 15-13 against Great Britain and Ireland at the Saint-Nom-La-Breteche Golf Club. Francesco Molinari sealed a dramatic win when he hit a fine tee shot within 12 feet of the pin at the par 3, 16th and then sunk his putt to defeat Englishman Chris Wood 3 and 2. Europe were leading 14-13 and needing just a half point for victory, and Molinari, who also sunk the winnning putt to give Europe the Ryder Cup last year at Medinah, again showed nerves of steel under pressure. The Milan right-hander’s birdie lifted Europe to a 15-13 victory. “I don’t like all these matches finishing on the last game, one of these days my heart isn’t going to take it anymore,” joked European captain Jose Maria Olazabal. SPORTING LEGENDS: SEVE BALLESTEROS SPORT: GOLF COMPETITIVE ERA: 1974 - 2008 Severiano "Seve" Ballesteros (born 9 April 1957 in Pedreña, Spain) is a Spanish golfer who was one of the sport's leading figures in the 1980s and 1990s. Ballesteros turned professional in March 1974 at the age of 16. In 1976, he burst onto the international scene with a second-place finish in The Open Championship; he went on to win the European Tour Order of Merit (money title) that year, and repeated his Order of Merit win the following two years. He would go on to win the Order of Merit six times, a record at that time (since surpassed by Colin Montgomerie). Ballesteros went on to win five major championships: The Masters: 1980, 1983 His 1980 win was the first at Augusta by a European player. The Open Championship: 1979, 1984, 1988. He was also a great at match play; he won the World Match Play Championship five times, and was a mainstay of the European Ryder Cup team for much of the 1980s and 1990s. He scored 20 points out of 37 matches against the United States; his partnership with José María Olazábal was one of the most successful in the history of the competition, with 11 wins and two halved matches out of 15 pairs matches. While Ballesteros was a member of European sides that won the Ryder Cup in 1985, retained the Cup in 1987 and 1989, and regained the Cup in 1995, the pinnacle of his career in the competition came in 1997, when he captained the winning European side at Valderrama Golf Club in Sotogrande, Spain.

VIVENDI TROPHY Continental Europe vs. Great Britain and Ireland The Duel, 15-18 September, 2011 Saint-Nom-La-Bretèche (France) Press release – 18th May, 2011 In the spirit of Severiano Ballesteros Vivendi today announced that Jean Rene Fourtou, Chairman of the Vivendi Supervisory Board, has suggested to the PGA European Tour that the "Vivendi Trophy with Seve Ballesteros" be renamed to "The Vivendi Seve Trophy", in memory of Severiano Ballesteros who really knew, amongst other things, how to develop and support the spirit of match play and Golf as an all-round game. During the day's press conference, Scott Kelly, Marketing Director of the PGA European Tour emotionally welcomed the change on behalf of the PGA European Tour. The 2011 Vivendi Trophy The Vivendi Trophy takes place every two years, alternating with the Ryder Cup. The Vivendi Trophy 2011 will take place from 15th to 18th September at the Saint-Nom-La- Bretèche Golf Course. Following the success of its 2009 version, the second edition of this great competition, initiated and organised by CANAL+ EVENTS, will once again put the 10 best players in Continental Europe in a head to head with the elite of Great Britain and Ireland. A new champion at the helm Jose Maria Olazabal will succeed Colin Montgomerie as the Ryder Cup 2012 Team Captain. The Spanish champion will then head the Seve Trophy 2011. "Txema" may, like Monty did in 2009, oversee and observe the two teams. This arrival is also highly symbolic: we all remember the achievements of the fearsome pair in the Ryder Cup with Olazabal and Ballesteros.

  • 2004 PGA TOUR Media Guide / 1-1 Table of Contents
A Message to the Media n behalf of the players and staff, welcome to the 2004 PGA TOUR season. We appreciate your continued interest in our sport, and we clearly recognize the extent to which our success is tied to the thorough and professional coverage we receive from a Owide variety of global media outlets. As the PGA TOUR begins another great season, we can truly state that the image and competitive spirit of our players has led to the healthiest state in the history of our organization. The Sports Business Journal recently reaffirmed this when it published the “2003 League Report Card,” a survey of corporate sponsors’ opinions of their investment in sports properties. The PGA TOUR ranked first in overall satisfaction among the 16 major sports. This is important as we continue to raise the exposure of our tournaments, provide significant value to our sponsors and showcase the widespread excellence of our athletes. The competition level on the PGA TOUR in 2003 was at an all-time high, with season-ending honors going down to the wire. Tiger Woods recorded a season-high five victories and the lowest stroke average on TOUR and garnered a fifth consecutive Player of the Year honor. Vijay Singh won four times and captured his first money title. Davis Love III won a career-high four times, includ- ing THE PLAYERS Championship, making 2003 the first time in 30 years where three players won four or more times in a season. However, the depth of the TOUR was never more evident. Eleven players age 40 or older combined to capture 15 PGA TOUR titles.
