International Conference KNOWLEDGE-BASED ORGANIZATION Vol. XXIII No 2 2017 MASS-MEDIA COMMUNICATION IN ROMANIA Ioana-Narcisa CREȚU “Lucian Blaga” University of Sibiu, Romania [email protected] Abstract: Over 1200 new publications have appeared in Romania since the fall of communism. Some of them don’t exist anymore, but there always appear new ones. The Romanian newspaper market comprises about 1500 publications most of which appear on a weekly basis and 200 daily newspapers. Television is the most familiar source of information. The radio landscape has changed considerably - similar to the television - since 1990. Besides the public broadcaster offering several programs, there are over 150 private local radio stations and various other channels. Despite the diversity of the Romanian press, we cannot yet speak of a completely free press (see the report of the Freedom House organization). The limitations of media freedom and freedom of speech are related to media ownership, but also with gaps in the national legislation. This study aims to contribute to the advancement in the conceptualization of qualitative journalism by proposing to analyze different situations of failure in investigative journalism and identifying factors that conduct to limitation of media freedom. Constructions of childhood, victimhood and abortion in Romania: the ‘little‐girl mother’ Jackie Kirkham, University of Edinburgh Abstract: In June 2008 in Romania an 11-year-old girl found herself thrust into the media spotlight when it was discovered that she was 17 weeks pregnant after being raped by her uncle. Romanian abortion laws permit abortion only up to 14 weeks gestation. In the weeks that followed, the case was rarely out of the popular media, with debates about both the minutiae of this particular case and more general discussion about the appropriateness of the current legal provision taking place within the context of widespread concern about the phenomenon of fetiţe-mame (‘little girl-mothers’). This article considers the way the extensive media coverage of this case contributed to debates in Romania around abortion, childhood and child protection, but also exposed insecurities around national identity and Romania’s place within a wider Europe. It argues that this case serves as a “critical discourse moment” (Brown and Ferree 2005:10) which highlights concerns about legislative shortcomings around abortion, media and professional roles in child protection, and the construction of childhood more generally in Romania. Keywords: Romania, abortion, childhood, media, child protection Introduction and Background Throughout the world debates have intensified around the sexualisation of children and young people, and at all levels of society policy makers are keen to address the phenomenon of precocious sexual activity, particularly around pregnancy. Childhood and adolescence are periods which are framed as protected spaces, with “a powerful modern idea of the child as innocent (especially sexually innocent) but always potentially corruptible” (Moran 2001:75; see also Hillier and Mitchell 2008). -

Foreword RULE OF LAW PROGRAM SOUTH EAST EUROPE The “fight against corruption” has been a subject on the Romanian public agenda for many DR. STEFANIE RICARDA ROOS years already (especially post 2005). Romania’s accession to the European Union (EU) on January 1, 2007 did not lower interest in the topic whatsoever. On the contrary: post July 9, 2008 accession, the fight against corruption has been a major concern for the mass-media, WWW.KAS.DE/RSPSOE political world, business community, legal professions and for the local and international WWW.KAS.DE civil society to an unprecedented extent. For example, this is what The Economist had to say on the fight against corruption in the new EU member states, on May 22, 2008: “For corrupt officials in Central and Eastern Europe, life has seldom been better. Joining the European Union has produced temptingly large puddles of public money to steal. And the region's anti-corruption outfits are proving toothless, sidelined or simply embattled. The biggest problems are in Romania and Bulgaria, the EU's two newest members, whose apparent inability (or disinclination) to deal with high-level corruption has led to increasingly acerbic public warnings from Brussels .”1 In an article published by The Herald Tribune mid-May, Reuters resident chief correspondent for Romania, Justyna Pawlak , writes the following on the manifest opposition in the country to combating top-level corruption: “Corruption is a day-to-day concern in Romania.”2 It is, indeed, a concern for the entire country and for all its citizens. -

PRESA SăTmăreANă DESPRE INTRAREA ROMÂNIEI ÎN PRIMUL RăzbOI MONDIAL1 Greta PETER Abstract: During the First World War, there were three more important towns in Satu Mare County. The most important and also the biggest one was Satu Mare, followed by Carei and Baia Mare. The town of residence was Ca- rei. Among other activities there was also journalism in these three towns, as newspapers and magazines were printed. All the magazines and newspapers were written in Hungarian, even if 54% of the population was Romanian. For the purpose of our study we focused our attention on the following publications: Szatmári Hirlap and Szamos (which came out in Satu Mare), Nagybánya és Vidéke (Baia Mare), and Nagykároly és Vidéke (Carei). Szamos was the only publication that used to come out daily, during the year of 1961. This paper had been printed ceaselessly since 1868. Szatmári Hirlap was a catholic paper that appeared twice a week. All the other papers used to appear weekly in 1916. The newspapers from Satu Mare, especially Szamos, were mostly interested in the news that came from Bucharest or from other capital cities, news that referred to Romania’s attitude towards the war. The attitude of the Romanian soldiers from the Austro- Hungarian army was also one of the papers’ preoccupations. The patriotism and devotion of certain Romanian soldiers and officers towards the two-headed monarchy are also emphasized. There were many propaganda articles referring with kindness to the Romanian people from Transilvania, but at the same time these articles remained neutral when talking about the Roma- nian people that lived beyond the Carpathians. -

Vol. 5, no. 1/2013 STYLES OF COMMUNICATION Neo-Nazis Sympathizers on the Forums of the Romanian Online Publications Elena-Irina Macovei, PhD Student “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iasi, Romania [email protected] Abstract: The research aims to highlight how the forums of the Romanian online publications may often become spaces for right-wing extremist propaganda. The case study includes about 1.000 comments of the readers, expressed on the articles about a protest of several intellectuals against a TV program of the Romanian public Television (TVR), where Corneliu Zelea Codreanu, the founder of the Iron Guard, a Nazi organization created in 1927, was presented as a romantic hero. The results of the content analysis of comments revealed the stigmatizing themes, the stereotypes and the extremist ideas identified on the forums of these articles. In addition, the comparison between the electronic platforms of the publications showed the importance of their features and of the characteristics of audiences regarding the content of the comments. Keywords: extremism, propaganda, stereotypes, online publications. 1. Introduction Since 1990 the Internet has gradually experienced an increase in the number of users. If in 2004 about 41% of Europeans used the Internet, in 2011 the percentage climbed to 73%. In Romania, the percentage increased from 6% in 2004 to 47% in 2011 (Eurostat 2012). This development of the internet provides new spaces for communication and facilitates the emergence of the new virtual communities. Furthermore, it expands the public sphere by creating novel ways of collective mobilization, of criticism regarding political, social and cultural issues, of spreading ideas and information and of political action (Cardon 2010; Flichy 2010: 44).
