JETS 56/2 (2013) 273–305 IDENTIFYING NIMROD OF GENESIS 10 WITH SARGON OF AKKAD BY EXEGETICAL AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL MEANS DOUGLAS PETROVICH* I. INTRODUCTION Perhaps one of the more intriguing and enigmatic characters in the OT is Nimrod, though his name appears only four times throughout the eNtire Bible (Gen 10:8, 9; 1 Chr 1:10; and Mic 5:6). His biography is narrated in Genesis 10, and opinions about his identity and character have abounded since ancient times. In Philo’s Questiones in Genesin 2.82, which dates to the first half of the first ceNturY AD, he refers to Nimrod as a giant who opposes God, and the original and chief of sinners. In Ant. 1.113–114, Josephus considered not only that Nimrod was alive during the tower of Babel incident, but that he was the one who changed the gov- ernment into a tyrannical one and incited those at Babel iNto buildiNg the iNfamous tower, in outright defiance of God. At present, opinions on the identity and character of Nimrod have coNtiNued to abound, and a discussion of some of the more noted options ventured will pro- ceed shortly. For now, suffice it to say that Nimrod is thought bY some to be hero- ic, while bY others to be devious; he is considered by some to be a mere mortal, though by others to be divine. Thus the goal of this essay is to sift through the di- versity of optioNs for the identity of this enigmatic figure named Nimrod, aNd to determine—if at all possible—whether his biography can be matched precisely with any known figure from antiquity. -

Change of location Chapters 4–16 have been under the rubric of 4:2, “immediately I was in the spirit (ἐν πνεύματι).” In Chapter 17, John is carried away ἐν πνεύματι “in the spirit” into the desert (17:3). B. Intermediary angel Te interaction between John and the intermediary angel—“one of the angels who had the seven bowls”— produces a clear parallel between the Babylon Appendix (17:1–19:10) and the Jerusalem Appendix (21:9– 22:9). In recent years the steady flow of critical investigations of ethnic sentiments in the biblical literature can be directly correlated to the salience of ethnic dynamics in our modern, multicultural context. It is reasonable to assert then that the biblical scholar’s primary purpose for studying ethnic dynamics in Israel’s past is to inform, in one way or another, the contemporary struggle for identity in an ethnically and racially fractured social landscape. The primary objective of this work is to investigate representations of Cushites in the Hebrew Bible, and as such it is a study of the past. -

Ross The previous article in this series dealt with the structure of the Table of Nations in Genesis 10.1 The deliberate design in its construction, symmetry, and unity were examined in an effort to understand its purpose as a tOdl;OT. But in addition to the evi- deuce from its structure, there is a wealth of information about the nations of the world that is important for the complete under- standing of this chapter within the message of Genesis. The Analysis of the Passage The heading of the chapter (Gen. 10:1) declares that this is the record of the particulars of what became of Shem, Ham, and Japheth after the Flood. The verse serves not only as a heading for the Table, but also as a literary connection back to Genesis 9:18 and 28. It is to be read with the oracle of Noah in mind! THE SONS OF JAPHETH (10:2-5) In the listing of Noah's sons, Japheth usually comes last. But here he is first because the tribes descended from Japheth were spread across the remote lands of the north and therefore were less involved in Israel's history. The connection of Japheth and ]Iapeto<j of the Greek tradi- tion is striking.2 In both Greek and Hebrew traditions, then, ]Iapeto<j was the ancestor of the Greeks. -

Notes on Ezekiel 202 1 Edition Dr. Thomas L. Constable TITLE AND WRITER The title of this book comes from its writer, Ezekiel, the son of Buzi (1:3). "Ezekiel" means "God strengthens (or hardens)" or "God will strengthen (harden)" or "May God strengthen (harden)." The name "Hezekiah" is similar, meaning "May Yahweh strengthen." "It expresses the prayerful wish of his parents that God would care for the newborn child by endowing him with strength, so that he could face life's vicissitudes with confidence."1 The Lord strengthened Ezekiel in the face of cynicism and rejection by his fellow Jews. His name appears in only two verses (1:3; 24:24). His hometown is unknown, and no other biblical writer referred to him. Ezekiel was a Judean priest of Yahweh as well as His prophet, as were Jeremiah (Jer. 1:1), Zechariah (Zech. 1:1), and John the Baptist (Luke 1:5). Ezekiel, Jeremiah, and Zechariah were the only writing prophets who were also priests, and they all ministered during or after the Babylonian exile. Like Jeremiah, there is no evidence that Ezekiel ever served as a priest in the Jerusalem temple. Ezekiel's priestly background may account in part for the interest in priestly things that his book reflects: the actions of the priests in Jerusalem, the Jerusalem temple, the glory of the Lord, and the future temple yet to be built. It probably also explains Ezekiel's familiarity with things connected with priestly ministry, such as cherubim. Ezekiel's wife died during the course of his ministry (24:2, 15-18), but there is no mention in the book that they had children. -

But there is more than this, for soon the writer of Genesis proceeds to tell us about the Tower of Babel, the first of Shin'ar's cities, and the circumstances in which it was founded.
