However, the relative influence of the different scale-related variables on assemblage composition and function is poorly understood. We evaluated the importance of local- and catchment- scale environmental variables, as well as the spatial structure of the sampling sites, in shaping fish assemblages in Atlantic Forest streams. Local-scale variables were those measured at the sampling sites, describing the local habitat conditions (e.g. depth, substrate type, altitude). Catchment-scale variables were those integrating the upstream landscape of the sampling sites (e.g. catchment land use). Spatial distances were calculated from watercourse distance using principal coordinates of neighbour matrices. Altogether, 28 local and seven catchment variables were initially subjected to two processes of eliminating co-linearity. Redundancy analysis was applied to the three matrices (spatial, local and catchment) to quantify the variance in the structure of the fish assemblages explained by each matrix. Local variables explained more variability in both taxonomic and functional assemblage structure, than catchment and spatial variables. Local variables also changed along the longitudinal gradient, which consequently influenced fish assemblage structure. This pattern was also influenced by anthropogenic alteration and non-native species, which were more abundant in downstream sites. These results highlight the need to assess Atlantic Forest streams under different environmental scales, especially through the use of quantitative local-scale metrics, and to consider the effects of longitudinal patterns in structuring fish assemblages when developing and implementing monitoring programmes, impact studies and conservation plans. The ovaries of Lithoxus were also examined and were sho~ to have very few (15--17) mature eggs that were large (1.6-2.2 mm) for the small size of the fish (38.6-41.4 mm SL). G. de Brito and Érica P. Caramaschi We report here on an albino specimen of Schizolecis guntheri caught in the rio Bonito in the rio Macaé basin, Rio de Janeiro State, southeastern Brazil. The hypothesis that albinism is more common in fishes with cryptobiotic and/or nocturnal habits is strengthened by additional records of this chromatic anomaly. A hipótese do albinismo ser mais comum em peixes com hábitos criptobióticos e/ou noturnos é fortalecida por registros adicionais desta anomalia cromática. Calegari and Roberto E. Reis Microlepidogaster longicolla, new species, is described from the rio São João of the upper rio Paraná basin near Brasília, in central Brazil. The new species differs from M. perforatus, the only other species in this genus, by having a continuous lateral line, median lateral plate series reaching, rather than falling short of, the end of the caudal peduncle, a shorter pectoral-fin spine (13.4-16.2 vs. 18.2-21.0% standard length), a smaller interorbital distance (38.9-43.1 vs. 47.7-53.3% head length), and more numerous dentary teeth (16-29 vs. 12-15), in addition to several osteological features. Microlepidogaster longicolla shows a remarkable suite of secondary sexually dimorphic characters, involving the presence of a conical urogenital papilla in males, the presence of a fleshy flap along the dorsal margin of first thickened pelvic-fin ray of males, longer pelvic fin in males, and a more strongly arched first pelvic-fin ray in females. Microlepidogaster longicolla, espécie nova, é descrita do rio São João da bacia superior do rio Paraná próximo a Brasília, no Brasil central.
