Originally Presented in Journées Augustiniennes de Carthage 2020 Augustinian Days in Carthage 2020 Relevance of the Pedagogical Theory of Saint Augustine to the 21st Century 12-14 November 2020 Carthage, Tunisia /Zoom Meeting Abstract Cognizant that Saint Augustine’s world of Latin Antiquity is foreign to a technological world and technology is not ethically neutral, this essay explores application of the 2 principle categories of the thought of Saint Augustine (Interiority and Communion) to practicing Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) in a technological world. In particular, an Augustinian Reflection Circle is provided for practicing Augustinian Interiority as well as engaging our brokenness, practicing humility, strengthening courage and cheerfulness, as well as working with diligence as practices of Augustinian Communion. These practices together with SEL in a technological world can give us an Augustinian Hope in our Information Age. Keywords: Augustinian Communion Augustinian Interiority Augustinian Pedagogy Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Information Age Learning Practices Technological World Augustinian Pedagogy Practitioner Impetus One can easily respond to the connection of Saint Augustine of Hippo to contemporary technology with the question: “Really???” In her book, Lurking: How a Person Became a User, Joanne McNeil identifies the primary concerns of people online as Search, Anonymity, Visibility, Sharing, Clash, Community, and Accountability.1 These categories can be seen as categories related to the life of Saint Augustine, particularly aspects leading to his conversion. But rather than a “person becoming a user,” it can be argued that through his conversion a “user became a person,” namely an authentic person as a Christian. -

Purves, Chair This dissertation is a consideration of how narratives in the Iliad and Odyssey find their shapes. Applying insights from scholars working in the fields of narratology and oral poetics, I consider moments in Homeric epic when characters make stories out of their lives and tell them to each other. My focus is on the concept of “creativity” — the extent to which the poet and his characters create and alter the reality in which they live by controlling the shape of the reality they mould in their storytelling. The first two chapters each examine storytelling by internal characters. In the first chapter I read Achilles’ and Agamemnon’s quarrel as a set of competing attempts to create the authoritative narrative of the situation the Achaeans find themselves in, and Achilles’ retelling of the quarrel to Thetis as part of the move towards the acceptance of his version over that of Agamemnon or even the Homeric Narrator that occurs over the course of the epic. In the second chapter I consider the constant storytelling that [ii ] occurs at the end of the Odyssey as a competition between the families of Odysseus and the suitors to control the narrative that will be created out of Odysseus’s homecoming. -

Thanks are due to Andrew Banchich and Christopher Filkins for their assistance with a range of technical matters and to Ryan Post, who read and commented on drafts of the translation. ii INTRODUCTION In the spring of 2007, I suggested to four students—Sarah Brill, Emilyn Haremza, Dustin Hummel, and Ryan Post—the preparation of an English translation of ΠΕΡΙ ΠΟΤΑΜΩΝ ΚΑΙ ΟΡΩΝ ΕΠΩΝΥΜΙΑΣ ΚΑΙ ΤΩΝ ΕΝ ΑΥΤΟΙΣ ΕΥΡΙΣΚΟΜΕΝΩΝ, better known, when known at all, by its abbreviated Latin title, De fluviis, About Rivers. Their resultant rough version of a portion of About Rivers, in turn, provided the impetus for the translation presented here. However, while the students worked from Estéban Calderón Dorda’s text in the Corpus Plutarchi Moralium series, for reasons of copyright, I have employed what was the standard edition prior to Dorda’s, that of Rudolph Hercher.1 Only the ninth-century codex Palatinus gr.
