Object of this study are namely clan and customary title of Minangkabau ethnic based on character and usage in this society. The issues that are raised in this paper, i.e.: (1) What are the names of clans and titles in the Minangkabau ethnic group in West Sumatra Province? (2) What are the functions and meanings of names of clans and titles? The data source in this sudy is library study and oral data from from native speaker of Minangkabau Language. This study use descriptive qualitative method. Based on analysis can be describe: (1) namely clan of Minangkabau ethnic refer to Tambo that is Datuak Ketumanggungan and Datuak Perpatih Nan Sabatang. Using clan name is taken from place and tribe of Minangkabau ethnic; (2) namely of customary title in Minangkabau ethnic based on character and the usage Gala Mudo (Gelar Muda), Gala Sako (Gelar Pusaka Kaum), and Gala Sangsako (Gelar Kehormatan). Keyword: clan, title, datuk, Minangkabau Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan penamaan nama marga dan nama gelar adat etnik Minangkabau di Sumatera Barat yang berhubungan dengan kajian etnolinguistik. Objek penelitian ini adalah penamaan nama marga dan nama gelar adat pada etnik Minangkabau berdasarkan pada penggunaannya. Adapun permasalah yang diangkat adalah: (1) Apa sajakah nama marga dan nama gelar dalam etnik Minangkabau di Provinsi Sumatera Barat? ; (2) Apa sajakah fungsi dan makna pemberian nama marga dan nama gelar tersebut? Data penelitian ini bersumber pada data kepustakaan dan data lisan dari penutur bahasa Minangkabau. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Berdasarkan hasil analisis data dapat dideskripsikan sebagai berikut. Pertama, penamaan nama marga dalam etnis Minangkabau merujuk pada tambo, yakni Datuk Ketumanggungan dan Datuk Perpatih Nan Sebatang. Penggunaan nama marga diambil dari nama tempat dan suku. Kedua, penamaan nama gelar adat dalam etnik Minangkabau berdasarkan pada sifat dan penggunaannya, yakni gala mudo (gelar muda), gala sako (gelar pusaka kaum), dan gala sangsako (gelar kehormatan). In 17th--19th century this type of work was commonly found in the Riau Island manuscripts, especially in Pulau Penyengat. This area in ancient times became a scriptorium of Malay manuscripts. Several authors and scribes’ works, such as Raja Haji, Raja Ali Haji, Raja Ibrahim, and Salamah Binti Ambar and a descendant of Encik Ismail bin Datuk Karkun, were found in the region. Their works among others are Tuhafat An-Nafis, Silsilah Melayu, dan Bugis, and Hikayat Negeri Johor. In Indonesia, the manuscripts are kept in the National Library of Indonesia in Jakarta and Indrasakti Foundation in Riau Island. Some manuscripts among others were found in the Leiden University Library and KITLV Library in Netherlands. The historiography is useful to explore the source of historical knowledge, especially in search for understanding the process in the formation of Malay ethnic group with plural identities in Indonesia. The aim is to find representation of pluralism in the past Malay literary history which has contributed and strengthened nationalism. In the study we use qualititative research and descriptive methods of analysis. The research has found that the Malay ethnic group in Indonesia derived from various ethnic groups that integrated and became a nation with pluralities. According to the myth, the Malay ethnic group came from the unity between the upper-world or the angelic world and the under-world depicted as the marriage between Putri Junjung Buih and a human being.

After they sailed out from the port of Tiku/Pariaman on the west coast, the sea suddenly ebbed, for that was the divine decree of God. As a consequence, their ship ran aground on the sand. The two datuk gathered all their children and kemanakan together and said, "Hai, children and kemanakan, let us tow this ship, because it has run aground on the sand." Their children answered, "We are afraid that we will be run over by the ship." Their kemanakan replied, "If that is the wish of our elders, let us tow the ship. It does not matter even if we are run over by the ship and killed in the process, for it is the ship of our elders that has run aground." All the kema­ nakan then got off onto the sand and pulled the ship. With the assis­ tance of the spirits, the ship floated again of itself and moved to the middle of the sea. Later, following the advice of Cati Bilang Pandai, their able servant, the two datuk decreed that from that time on all the property was to be given, not to the children, but to the kemanakan as a reward of their services.

Discussion of the hS is framed within this broader context and begins with an overview of Bugis and Makasar2 historical prose works, focusing mainly on the few longer written compositions dating from the 17th, to the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, and the factors that influenced their creation. Central to the article is the argument that these written works are not representative of Bugis and Makasar historical sources and that orality played the primary role in transmitting the past.

    193 CASSAVA BREEDING AND VARIETAL DISSEMINATION IN THE PHILIPPINES - MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS DURING THE PAST 20 YEARS Algerico M. Mariscal1, Reynaldo V. Bergantin1 and Anita D. Troyo1 ASTRACT During the past 20 years of close collaboration with CIAT in the cassava breeding program in the Philippines, much has been achieved, not only in terms of human capacity building but also in the acquisition of improved cassava germplasm. These materials were used in a multy-year selection scheme, which culminated in the release of several improved cassava varieties recommended for cultivation in the country, in order to support the need for food, feed and various industrial products. Since 1982 a total of 40,809 cassava hybrid seeds were received from CIAT headquarters in Colombia and 11,280 hybrid seeds rom the Thai-CIAT cassava program. These were evaluated in all stages of selection under Philippine conditions. Three cassava varieties were released by the Center during the early years of establishment and 16 varieties were subsequently released by the National Seed Industry Council. From these released varieties, six are of local origin, eight are from CIAT materials and five from locally developed hybrids. Progress in the selection of the materials received has been quite positive, meaning that a lot of the elite genetic materials introduced were selected for possible varietal release or as parental material for the breeding program. Considering the source of the two genetic populations we received, it was noted that hybrid seeds from Thailand performed very well in the Philippines; in fact, some of the elite materials have superior characteristics compared to the best Philippine varieties.

These written observations are made by Malaysia in response to the Registrar's letter of 14 March 2001. 2. To summarize, Malaysia categorically rejects any attempt of the Philippines to concern itself with a territorial dispute involving two small islands off the coast of Sabah (formerly North Bomeo). The subject of the dispute between Indonesia and Malaysia is not Malaysia's sovereignty over the State of Sabah (which sovereignty Indonesia explicitly accepts and recognises). It is solely the question of title to two small islands off Semporna, Malaysia. Indonesia's claim is based on an interpretation of Article TV of the Convention of 1891 between Great Britain and the Netherlands. Spain had previously expressly recognised British title over the territory which was the subject of the 1891 Convention, by Article IJJ of the Protocol of 1885.' The Philippines can have no greater rights than Spain had. The interpretation of the 1891 Convention is thus a matter exclusively between Indonesia and Malaysia, in which the Philippines can have no legal interest. Nor does the Philippines have any legal interest in the subject matter of the specific dispute submitted to the Court by the Special Agreement.
