Last Match UTRGV Takes Down Texas Southern Sept. 3, 2021 at UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women’s soccer team beat the Texas Southern Tigers 2-0 on Friday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. Junior Anna Barkey scored the game-winning goal in the 49th minute off a feed from sophomore Elina Seppälä. It was Barkey’s second goal of the season, both of which have been game-winners. Graduate student Victoria Mayo added a goal off a free kick as she fired from left sideline over the outstretched arms of the leaping Alexis Espino (0-1-0) to make the score 2-0. Graduate student Maile Lunardi (2-1-0) recorded her second-straight shutout, the ninth of her career, by making one save. The Vaqueros (2-2-0) outshot the Tigers (0-3-0) 17-6, including 10-1 on goal. This was the first match back for Tigers head coach Lindsay Vera, the first assistant coach in program history, who worked with UTRGV head coach Glad Bugariu from 2014-17. UTRGV is back in action on Sunday at 7 p.m. at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union. UTRGV leads the showdown 3-0.

Previous Matches UTRGV Falls at No. 6 TCU Aug. 29, 2021 at Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s soccer team fell 6-0 to the Texas Christian University (TCU) Horned Frogs, who are ranked sixth in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, on Sunday at Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium. The Horned Frogs (3-0) didn’t waste much time to take the lead as Grace Collins scored in the fourth minute of the match to make it 1-0 over the Vaqueros (1-2). Later in the first half, Collins found Gracie Brian who then found the back of the net in the 17th minute for the 2-0 TCU lead. After about an hour lightning delay coming out of halftime, TCU got a goal from Messiah Bright in the 50th minute making it 3-0. The Horned Frogs added goals from Oli Pena in the 61st minute, another goal from Brian in the 71st minute, and a goal from Lauren Memoly in the 80th minute pushing the score to 6-0. The Vaqueros were held to just two shots, one on goal, in the match while TCU put pressure on UTRGV’s freshman goalkeeper Macie Blohowiak (0-1) with 34 shots and 16 shots on goal. Blohowiak finished the match with a career-high 10 saves.

UTRGV Wins Showdown in Front of Electric Crowd Aug. 27, 2021 at UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women’s soccer team beat the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders 2-0 as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, on Friday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex in front of an electric crowd of 818. The Vaqueros (1-1-0) now lead the Islanders (1-1-0) 3-0 in the showdown standings. The Vaqueros jumped on the board right away when junior Anna Barkey took a feed from sophomore Anna Torslov and buried in the fourth minute. It was Barkey’s first goal of the season and the third of her career. It was Torslov’s fifth-career assist. Then, in the 85th minute, junior Shentatious Knox sent a bender past the outstretched arms of a diving Kennedy Stelling (0-1-0) to make the score 2-0. It was Knox’s second goal of the season and the fifth of her career. Graduate student Maile Lunardi (1-1-0) made the goal stand up, making six saves for her eighth-career shutout. The Vaqueros outshot the Islanders 14-11, but were outshot 7-6 on goal.

UTRGV Falls to South Dakota State in Season Opener Aug. 22, 2021 at Fishback Soccer Park – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s soccer team fell 3-1 to the South Dakota State Jackrabbits in their season opener on Sunday at Fishback Soccer Park. The Jackrabbits (2-0-0) jumped out to the early1-0 lead as Cece Limongi scored the match’s first goal in the ninth minute. Minutes later, Eden Brooker made it 2-0 Jackrabbits with a goal in the 15th minute as she knocked it in off the crossbar. The Vaqueros (0-1-0) quickly answered back as freshman Libby Beilfuss delivered a cross into the box and found junior Shentatious Knox, who flicked into the left corner of the goal to cut the Jackrabbits’ lead 2-1. The Jackrabbits added another goal in the second half as Maya Hansen snuck one into the goal in the 59th minute to put the match out of reach for the Vaqueros. UTRGV was outshot 13 to 12 by South Dakota State with both teams posting six shots on goal.
